In unserer sechsten Ausgabe unseres Podcats präsentieren wir euch Esshar. Esshars Sets erinnern an eine kosmische Reise, geprägt von dunklen Synthesizern, verspulten Atmosphären, ekstatischer Momente, gebrochenen Beats und treibenden Rhythmen - subtil und zugleich energetisch. Mit diesem Set eröffnete Esshar am 17.08.24 vor Joel Mull den Südpol.

INTERVIEW
Wie bist du zur elektronischen Musik und insbesondere zum Techno gekommen? 

Den ersten technoiden Impact bekam ich 1997 als 8 jähriges Kind mit dem Track 20Hz von Capricorn. Beim Herumfahren mit meiner Oma im Auto holte sie die Single CD raus, ein Spontankauf, ab dem Moment war der Grundstein gelegt. Im gleichen Jahr kaufte ich mir mein erstes Album, Scooter - Age of Love, ab da wusste ich, dass elektronische Musik für mich funktioniert und began sie zu genießen und zu erforschen. 20hz beeinflusst mich noch heute und umfasst alle Ecken und Kanten meines heutigen Stils. Sphärische Synthesizer, non-konforme Rhythmen, Verspultheit und ein Hauch vom sich Treiben lassen.

 Du gibst FLINTA*-DJ Workshops in Hamburg. Was für Erfahrungen hast du dort gesammelt und wie versuchst du dein Wissen weiterzugeben? 

Da ich einen technischen Background durch meine Ausbildung in der Veranstaltungstechnik habe, liegt mein Fokus in den DJ-Workshops auf die Vermittlung der Grundlagen in der Tontechnik und deren Hardware. Das Interesse an den Workshops ist unglaublich hoch. Es freut mich riesig zu sehen wie groß die Begeisterung der Teilnehmenden nach den Workshops ist und welche Talente dort bisher geweckt wurden. Du bist Resident-DJ im Südpol, was macht das Auflegen im dort für dich besonders?

Der Südpol ist ein Ort des Ausprobieren und Wachsen für mich. Ohne den Support und das Vertrauen in meinen musikalischen Output hätte ich wohl kaum meinen heutigen Stil finden und ausarbeiten können. Die Möglichkeit im Nebel zu pulsierendem gedimmten Licht das Publikum mit auf eine Reise zu nehmen macht für mich den Ort mehr als besonders.

In our sixth edition of our podcast, we present Esshar. Esshar's sets are reminiscent of a cosmic journey, characterized by dark synthesizers, twisted atmospheres, ecstatic moments, broken beats and driving rhythms - subtle and energetic at the same time. With this set, Esshar opened for Joel Mull at Südpol on August 17, 2024.

How did you get into electronic music and especially techno?

I got my first technoid impact in 1997 as an 8-year-old child with the track 20Hz by Capricorn. While driving around in the car with my grandma, she pulled out the single CD, an impulse buy, and from that moment on the foundation was laid. In the same year I bought my first album, Scooter - Age of Love, from then on I knew that electronic music worked for me and started to enjoy and explore it. 20hz still influences me today and encompasses all the nooks and crannies of my current style. Spherical synthesizers, non-conformist rhythms, a sense of being unhinged and drifting.

You give FLINTA DJ workshops in Hamburg. What experiences have you had there, and how do you pass on your knowledge?

Since I have a technical background through my training in event technology, my focus in the DJ workshops is on teaching the basics of sound engineering and hardware. The interest in the workshops is incredibly high. It makes me really happy to see the enthusiasm of the participants after the workshops and to witness the talents that have been awakened. Here's to more FLINTA* on the decks!

You are resident DJ at Südpol. What makes playing there special for you?

Südpol is a place for me to experiment and grow. Without the support and trust in my musical output, I probably wouldn’t have been able to find and refine my current style. The chance to take the audience on a journey, in the fog and under pulsing, dimmed lights, makes this place truly special for me.

For over a decade, Pascal Hetzel has been a steady presence in Berlin's large electronic music community. He developed a knack for long free flowing  hardware jam sessions, that traversed the whole spectrum of electronic dance music from dark, industrial-tinged techno to classic motor city electro and italo disco-appreciating euphoria. In addition to his work as one half of CYRK, Pascal Hetzel continues to make a name for himself as a solo artist. His sound is deeply influenced by Detroit techno’s rich legacy. His first release on Juan Atkins’ groundbreaking Metroplex label, to be released in May 2025, marks another milestone in his career. It’s his first solo release since his EP on another Detroit-based label: Interdimensional Transmissions’ sub-label Eye Teeth and his solo-album on the Belgian label Arkham Audio. Rest assured, there is more to come, both with CYRK and as a solo artist.
