"This one is special. I actually did the mix for my own listening pleasure - to have something uplifting to drift around to. Then I lost it... Years later it suddenly showed up on a friends harddrive - and the rest is history! 
The red line in the mix is the Bossa Nova groove which gives deep associations to my childhood - grew up listening to my parents scandi-latin-jazz inspired records such as "Tio Vackra Visor Och Personliga Person" by Cornelis Vreeswijk and children records played by top notch musicians. I tried to recall these memories served by easy and joyful grooves all the way from Cirkeline to Rico Suave!"

This time the feeling came to my mind that my goal is complete. A tape I can enjoy - not due to good mixing or so - just the vibe is complete and that's it.
These moments in early November reflecting dark sound scapes that haunt my memories from the Tapedeck era.
We used to sit on these benches and let the cassette rock and dream about our future in music. How we'll evolve and which goals we wanted to pursue. The industry never swallowed us and I mean they tried it more than once. Turn us to clowns on stage. This sound remembers me on this Berlin nights, that in Dresden, London, Leipzig. On the verge of creating my first records. Sleeping in the studio and dj'ing nearly every second night. House Partys and hallway cyphers with beginners, legends and characters.

As I explained in last year’s mix (link), surviving a Montreal is no joke: winters here average anywhere from -20 to -30, but the most painful part is that it last 5 months. Needless to say, Spring has a bit of extra magic to it when you’ve suffered so much for it.

When I sat down and started doing research for the spring mix last year I quickly realized how many spring-themed albums and songs there are. My focus with “IT HAPPENS EVERY SPRING” is to try and capture the glorious feeling of opening up your windows and doors for the first time in months. To feature music that is powerful, spiritual and sometimes just fun stuff to have a bike ride to…

Last years’ mix had a more upbeat feel but this year it was impossible for me to replicate that vibe because of what i’ve been going through these past few months. This year’s mix features some cheerful songs as well as some sad ones too but all of them are beautiful and inspiring in their way. More importantly, it’s music that is helping me through some tough times.

Solid Steel (2nd June) It's a special Stones Throw takeover this week, with label founder Peanut Butter Wolf heading up the show exactly 20 years after he first appeared on Solid Steel in 1997 (which you can also hear at http://solidsteel.net/broadcasts/1069), followed by jazz drummer and producer extraordinaire Karriem Riggins. 

Back in the summer of 1997, Peanut Butter Wolf paid a visit to the Ninja Tune studio in Clink Street, South London to record a mix. His label Stones Throw had started the year before and a handful of those early tracks featured in his mix. Two decades later Stones Throw is still going strong, having seen releases over the years from the likes of Madlib and his alter ego Quasimoto, MF Doom, J Dilla, Cut Chemist, J Rocc, The Stepkids, Dam Funk, Jonwayne and a whole host of quality reissues. His new mix contains some unreleased Stones Throw tracks alongside some incredibly rare gems and he told us; 
"I tried to include a combo of my old records, some yet-to-be released Stones Throw stuff and some unreleased demos from artists w/o a label. Hope you enjoy every second of every song."

In Hour 2 we continue the African theme with Egon from Now Again and a selection of music from the continent of Africa and elsewhere, recorded at the excellent Brilliant Corners in London. We don't have a tracklist, but there is music from K Frimpong, Ebo Taylor, Rail Band from Mali and as you'd expect plenty more rare pieces of vinyl. Egon started Now Again having been general manager at Stones Throw and involved with releases by J Dilla, Madlib and MF Doom amongst others. A whole host of reissues and compilations from around the world followed as well as new artists and this month he releases 'Welcome To Zamrock Vols 1 & 2', unearthing some amazing pieces of music from Zambia from the 70's. Both volumes are presented as 2LPs and also as a full 104-page hardcover book with CD containing rare tracks by WITCH, Amanaz, Paul Ngozi, Chrissy Zebby Tembo, Five Revolutions, Dr. Footswitch and every important Zamrock band.
