The working classes identified with black America, we didn't have a pot to piss in and the music needed to be real and mostly danceable...and dance we did. This is a record of that music as I saw it.

Caribbean Rhythms aren't restricted to Reggae, and Dub etc from Jamaica, fabulous though that music is. There is also Soca from Trinidad and the Leeward Islands...Zouk from the French islands. Here is a Yaba pot full of musical spices...seen?

Brian Wilson’s Beach Boys' hits were not recorded by his brothers and cousins…although they did sing along, apparently. The "family-friendly" balladeers of the time were being replaced by “pop" music, and a tight group of studio musicians, men and women, on both sides of the Atlantic, provided the fills—they were the "Wrecking Crews." This three-hour hit fest features songs from then and now, and works great for Thanksgiving parties. The reverb of shoes on pavement and the lapping of water on walls echo in the natural sonic geography of alley and street. VIVALDI  1678-1741
Antonio Lucio Vivaldi, 1678-1741, was nicknamed Il Prete Rosso 'The Red Priest' because of his red hair. He was an Italian Baroque composer and virtuoso violinist, born in Venice, and recognized as one of the greatest Baroque composers of his age. Vivaldi is known mainly for composing instrumental concertos, especially for the violin, as well as sacred choral works and over 40 operas. His best known work is a series of violin concertos known as The Four Seasons. But you knew that.

lyricism, expressive breadth, structural ingenuity, and a tonal palette of rich, distinctive orchestral colors. The piano is featured prominently in Rachmaninoff compositional output. He made a point of using his own skills as a performer to explore fully the expressive possibilities of the instrument. Even in his earliest works he revealed a sure grasp of idiomatic piano writing and a striking gift for melody. Note the Prelude In C Sharp Minor Opus 3 No 2 or last track, played by the composer.

RACHMANINOFF 1873 - 1943: Romance romance romance, the rarified mix.

THOMASO ALBINONI: 1671-1751:  It appears from the somewhat undocumented innings of our 'Tomo' (the later part of his life and music was lost to the Allied bombs that destroyed Dresden in World War II) that unlike any composer of his time, he never required the patronage of the Church or the Court. Independently wealthy this Venetian composer, and better than average violinist and singer, could finance himself on the profits of his paper company. Prolific at the art of the Opera he claims to have knocked out over 80. But it is for his instrumental work he is most noted. The Concerti featured here is a fine example of one of the first Italian compositions for Oboe, and is said to have been a formative influence on the genius of J.S Bach. But apart from this little spark of light, his biography is scarce illuminated. Pretty vaguely impressive no?

MICROBIO Maran Marais: When it came to the basse de viol Marin Marais was the Eric Clapton of his day. This bewigged Parisian could make this unwieldy  object, which looks like a viola but is played like a guitar... speak! So good was he that he was appointed to play at the royal court in Versailles, a post he kept for 46 years. We don't know much about the latter stages of his life, but we do know that he and his missus put together a family of 19 kids, how did he find the time to compose? Tous les matins du monde (English translation: All the Mornings of the World) is a 1991 French film based on the book of the same name. Set during the reign of Louis XIV, the film shows the eminent musician Marin Marais looking back on his young life when he tried to become a pupil of Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe, and features much music of the period, especially that for the viola da gamba. The title of the film is explained towards the end of the film 'Tous les matins du monde sont sans retour' ("all the mornings of the world never return") spoken by Marais in chapter XXVI of Quignard's novel when he learns of the death of Madeleine. So there you go.

MICROBIO: Scion of a Scottish mother and French father Georg was a dab hand at the organ. In Paris he fell under the influence of Lois XIV's court composer, and dance partner Jean-Baptiste Lully. A waggle of the wig later saw him in Vienna, Prague and Salzburg, whence to Italy to rub shoulders and clink glasses with Archangelo Corelli who he much admired. A stickler for accurate interpretation of the French style, his notes are still referred to for musical rectitude. Play on play on.
