Mashallah, what a wonderful discussion!  I didn’t understand the brother’s claim in minute 49 re: how a surah becomes manifest by repeating it over and over again for hours at a time.  Please do some more podcasts with this enlightened brother!

In this lecture, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf clarifies many of the questions surrounding how we as Muslims can best understand how to follow the Quran and the Prophetic Way (Sunnah) of our beloved Prophet Muhammad. By explaining how legal rulings are derived, and the required qualifications of those who engage in this process, Shaykh Hamza brings light to the rich legal tradition of Islam.

With these clarification in mind, the listener is elevated past simple slogans for a return to the sources, and is equipped with an enriched understanding of the process of interacting with the divine sources of law.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ الفاتِحِ لِمَا أُغْلِقَ و الخاتِمِ لِمَا سَبَقَ نَاصِرِ الحَقِّ بَالحَقَّ و الهَادِي إلى صِرَاطِكَ المُسْتَقِيمِ و عَلَى آلِهِ حَقَّ قَدْرِهِ و مِقْدَارِهِ العَظِيم 

Allahumma salli `alaa Sayyidinaa Muhammadini 'l-faatihi limaa ughliq, wa 'l-khaatimi limaa sabaq, naasiri 'l-haqqi bi 'l-haqq, wa 'l-haadi ilaa Siraatika 'l-Mustaqeem, wa `alaa aalihi haqqa qadrihi wa miqdaarihi 'l-`azheem. 

Scholars have said if you recite this once, it is as if you recited Dala`il al-Khayrat 600,000 times! Another says if you recite salawaat on the number of human beings from the time of Sayyidina Adam (a) until Judgment Day, that is the value of Salaat al-Faatih! 

O Allah, bless our Master Muhammad, who opened what was closed and sealed what was before. He makes the truth victorious by the truth and he is the guide to Your Straight Path. And bless his Household as it befits his immense stature and splendor.

After reading the works of Rumi and Ibn Arabi he traveled to study with contemporary Sufi teachers in Morocco, Turkey, Yemen, Egypt and beyond. He has a BA in Arabic from the University of Washington and was awarded a Master's Degree in Islamic Studies from the GTU, Berkeley for his research on the Sufi thought of Abu Hamid al-Ghazali. As a teaching-artist he has performed all over the world, including such institutions as Princeton and the School of Oriental and African Studies, London.
