A setting of the poem by Margaret Atwood in response to the Vietnam war; Patricia Morehead's music was motivated by the Columbine shootings. The wonderful mezzo-soprano Gena van Oosten joins with pianist Philip Morehead in this performance from Ms. Morehead's 80th birthday celebration concert.

Design Two was written for the versatile and accomplished flutist Carole Morgan, who plays it in this performance. The second movement was conceived for bass flute, but if the performer does not have access to an instrument, it can be played on regular C flute. The playful but very challenging first movement leads to a lyrical second movement, and then to a syncopated and jazzy final romp.

Design One is a study for oboe in 20th-century techniques, including multiphonics, fluttertongue, vibrato, pitch bend, etc. Into an appealing and tightly-constructed work a wide variety of techniques are integrated, making a work both fun to play and to listen to. In this version the great Alex Klein plays the piece on bass oboe.

The inspiration for A Shimmering: It was a perfect night, crisp and still, in late summer, on a northern Ontario lake when the moon painted a silver path across the shimmering water. As the world held its breath, the muse began to whisper. The poetry is by Sharon Singer and the vocalist is mezzo-soprano Beste Kalendar.

A Song of Pilgrimage was commissioned by Grace Place Episcopal church in Chicago in 2015. The text from Ecclesiastes was supplied by Reverend Ted Curtis. The mezzo-soprano is Gena van Oosten of Toronto, the English horn player is the composer and the pianist is Philip Morehead.

“Meditation” is inspired by the feelings of awe, fear and elation experienced by the Blessed Virgin Mary at the news brought by the angel Gabriel that she will conceive and bear the Son of God. “Exultation” portrays the five joyful mysteries (The Annunciation, The Visitation, The Nativity, The Presentation, and The Finding in the Temple) contemplated when praying the Holy Rosary. Played by the remarkable Alex Klein, principal oboe of the Calgary Philharmonic and former prijncipal of the Chicago Symphony.

Meditation And Exultation

This charming work was written for the Exsultate Trio, consisting of soprano Mario Lagios, flutist Monty Adams and harpist Phyllis Adams. The work has six movements, based on works by the poets listed in parentheses: The Creation of the World (Madeleine L’Engle), Jellyfish Stew (Jack Prelutsky), Batty (Shel Silverstein), An Unassuming Owl (Jack Prelutsky), Peckin’ (Shel Silverstein), and Creation of Fish, Fowl, and Cattle (Madeleine L’Engle).
