100% of the proceeds from Out of Season will go to headspace, a national youth mental health foundation that provides early intervention mental health services to 12 to 25-year-olds.

Eora (Sydney) based label Theory Therapy presents Out of Season, a collection of immersive ambient and downtempo recordings inspired by place, environment and the passing seasons. Created across multiple time zones and four continents, the compilation consists of several geographically distant but sonically connected underground artists.

The collection begins in New Zealand. 'downpour', by Aotearoa based producer èvia, is a landscape drawing in sound, an evocation of the elements that blends subtle environmental recordings with cascading electronics and gossamer-like textures. From there, the compilation ventures into more nebulous terrain. The expansive ‘Shaft of Light’ is unlike anything you’ve heard from Cousin and Hugh B before, ‘Tar Bae’ and ‘Journey To Urras’ hover somewhere in the interstice between ambient and club music, and ‘Dementia Flower’ recalls IDM icons Boards of Canada if the Scottish duo were to have placed their uncanny samples front and centre. Even the phosphorescent glow of Salamanda’s ‘Hungry Bone’ feels strangely unfamiliar, its simple melody obscured beneath layers of static and hiss as though you’re listening to a decomposing pop song. The inverse occurs on Slowfoam’s track, where seemingly disconnected patterns slowly coalesce, like watching a cumulus cloud form overhead.

The compilation’s second half is a more ethereal affair: a set of meditative ambient soundscapes shrouded in mystery. Reverberant drones, disembodied vocals and haunting incantations from Alexandra Spence, Babyxxan, Match Fixer and Lisa Lerkenfeldt are meticulous exercises in stillness that seem to exist outside of time. Portland artist Patricia Wolf briefly pulls the album back into orbit; the celestial ‘Morning Light’ opens with a flurry of bird calls taken from the musician’s recent trip to Mount Saint Helens in the Skamania County of Washington. ‘In The Distance (Blood Moon Mix)’ by Sydney’s Marco Vella, closes the compilation, the setting somewhere just past sundown, not far from where it began across the Tasman Sea. It's by far the most Balearic-influenced contribution, a track imbued with a sense of forward movement, hinted at by its title and reflected in the song’s subtle interplay of melody and percussion, which glide effortlessly along.

The 13 tracks that make up Out of Season were made in Sydney, Melbourne, Seoul, Austin, Chicago, Portland, Berlin and New Zealand. We acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the traditional custodians of the Country upon which Theory Therapy and Low End Theorists was founded, and recognise that sovereignty has not been ceded. We pay our respects to Elders, past, present and future.

Dublab: Tonalism at Bonnaroo

Hello everyone! I was invited to create some presets for Harmonic Bloom by Sonora Cinematic. Harmonic Bloom is a sound design plugin on Kontakt Player. It utilizes the concept of the harmonic series to turn noise into unique and distinctive musical material that can be used in your compositions. I had a lot of fun creating some presets for the new v1.3 free update.

In this recording, I demonstrate some of the presets that I created for Harmonic Bloom. I made a few sequences in Ableton to trigger the patches. Everything you hear is directly from the patch including the effects and panning. I did not EQ the recordings or add any compression. All of the sounds are straight from the source. When you hear a modulation in the sound it's either from my LFO programming or from adjusting the Noise/Pitch ratio. I really enjoyed working with this instrument and have already used it in my music. I hope you enjoy these sounds. Thank you for listening! Patricia Wolf live hardware set at SubSensory Presents w/ Headless Horseman, JAK, and Optimal Decay

Hello everyone! This is a demonstration of the sound design work I did for the Novation Peak. I created 50 patches demonstrating some of the new features that the v1.2 firmware update has to offer. My sound pack is available for free with the update through Novation's Components App. Select the Novation tab on that app to access them as well as GForce Software's free patches. 

The patches are performed with a mixture of Octatrack sequencing (using sequences from songs I have written) and live performance with a MIDI controller. I was inspired by artists like Delia Derbyshire and wanted to record little vignettes and sonatas using the Peak without other sound sources.

I made this recording so that friends can hear the sounds I made and so that other Peak users can get a closer glimpse into how I envision sound design. Please get in touch if you have any questions about my process or anything else related to this project and I will respond as best I can. 

The Novation Peak was recorded directly into a Steinberg UR44 interface. No external effects. Subtle mastering from Tokyo Dawn Labs software to balance recordings of different patches. Thank you for listening!

For the release of the Novation Summit I was commissioned to write 64 multi patches and 78 single patches. This demo is a showcase of many of my favorite multi patches, which are either layered over each other or played across two keyboard zones. Within my sound design I wanted to emphasize patches that utilize complex routings for the Animate and mod wheel controls, along with the new dual filter architecture.

This is a recording I made for the 418th weekly Disquiet Junto project — Ice-Nine / The Assignment: Record the sound of ice in a glass and make something of it. I rattled 4 cubes of ice, partially melted in a large thick glass beer stein by my microphone and passed the sounds through my Red Panda Particle pedal and OTO BIM and BAM units as it was being recorded. I further processed the recording through Ableton's Resonators, Saturator, and Reverb.

Step 3: Create a new piece of music using only the source audio. Use as many of the samples as you’d like, but don’t add other sounds, or process the samples to any extent more than slightly altering the individual material.

Patricia Wolf has said of her original piece: “Cellular Chorus is a work of spatialized aleatoric music using smartphones to bring people physically closer to have an interactive and collective experience with light and sound. The piece is played by each user visiting Cellular Chorus on their smartphones. … The sounds I made are meant to harmonize. There is no right or wrong way to play them. The intention of this piece is to repurpose your smartphone for deep listening, creative experimentation, and to immerse groups of people in a sound and light environment with face to face interactions.”
