Pido Silencio (uit Canciones Salvajes)

2004 was het Neruda- jaar en in dat kader ben ik in dat jaar  begonnen met het componeren van de liederencyclus Canciones Salvajes. Een eerste versie werd gepresenteerd in oktober 2004 in Amsterdam. De definitieve versie en de Cd opname werden in 2006 gepresenteerd 
Canciones Salvajes is een cyclus van 7 liederen voor soliste, koor en 5 musici (viool, quena, panfluit, hobo, charango, tiple, gitaar, basgitaar en percussie) op gedichten van Pablo Neruda, geschreven voor de Nederlandse zangeres Winanda van Vliet, koor o.lv. Adrián Rodríguez van der Spoel en ensemble: Renato Freyygang, Jasper le Clercq, Alvaro Pinto, Paul van Utrecht & Isaac Jeldres.

texto "Desierto":
En tierras blancas de sed  partidas de abrasamiento, los Cristos llamados cactus vigilan desde lo eterno.
Soledades, soledades,  desatados peladeros.  La tierra crispada y seca  se aparea con sus muertos,  y el espino, y el espino  braceando su desespero,  y el chañar cociendo el fruto  al sol que se lo arde entero.
Y en el altozano y en  las quebradas, como aperos  tirados como tendal,  tumbados de buhoneros,  aldeas y caseríos  llenos de roña y misterio.
Locos repechos, bajadas  como para niño y ciervo,  pero apenas un bocillo  de pastos de trecho en trecho  y caseríos callados  a medio alzarse, de miedo, bajo el viento que los lleva  y que los suelta en dos tiempos.
Y otras tierras desolladas  en Bartolomés inmensos,  de un costado desangradas,  del otro en tendido incendio. Y otra y otra vez aldeas  acurrucadas, friolentas,  con techo de paja y  huyendo y permaneciendo.
Claman ¡agua!, silabean  ¡agua! durmiendo o despiertos.  La desvarían tumbados  o en pie, con substancia y miembros. Y agua que les van a dar a  los tres entes pasajeros  con garganta que nos arde  y los costados resecos.

El agua en sorbo o en hebra,  sonando su silabeo,  merced al hilo de agua  delgada, piedad de estero, mejor que el oro y la plata  y el amor dado y devuelto.

Ahora ya vamos a entrar al país del desconsuelo,
a la costra que pardea, al pobre Abuelo Desierto.
Desiertos viví y morí; me los tuve y me los tengo 
y de ser fiel, todavía tu salada arena muerdo.

Lo que yo te doy de niebla y de  corto aliento fresco,
es el vaho de mí misma, es lo que llevo de cuerpo. 
Sosiega de una vez, cierra los ojos, llama tu sueño. 
Yo te iré canturreando canción que dice el Desierto.  
Tú duerme hasta que él se quede solo o con todos sus muertos.

Apuleius' tale

The goddess Aphrodite (in Roman mythology, Venus), jealous of the beauty of a mortal woman named Psyche, asked her son Eros (in Roman mythology, Cupid) to use his golden arrows to cause Psyche to fall in love with the ugliest man on earth. Eros agreed but then fell in love with Psyche on his own, or by accidentally pricking himself with a golden arrow.
When all continued to admire and praise Psyche's beauty but none desired her as a wife, Psyche's parents consulted an oracle which told them to leave Psyche on the nearest mountain, for her beauty was so great that she was meant for a god. So it was done. But then Zephyrus, the west wind, carried Psyche away to a fair valley and a magnificent palace where she was attended by invisible servants until night fell and in the darkness of night the promised bridegroom arrived and the marriage was consummated. Eros visited her every night and they made sweet love; he demanded only that she never light any lamps because he did not want her to know who he was.
Eros even allowed Zephyrus to take Psyche back to her sisters and bring all three down to the palace during the day, only warning that Psyche should not listen to any argument that she should try to discover his true form. The two jealous sisters told Psyche, then pregnant with Eros' child, that rumor was that she had married a great and terrible serpent who would devour her and her unborn child when her time came for it to be fed. They urged Psyche to conceal a knife and oil lamp in the bedchamber, to wait till her husband was asleep, and then to light the lamp and slay him at once if it was as they said.

2 Sisters takes these two characters from Apuleius’tale. It was composed in 2001 by Patricio Wang for the Pianoduo Post Mulder, commisioned by the Fonds voor de Scheppende Toonkunst, Holland.

Een goede moord (A good murder)

"Amor América", based on the poem by Pablo Neruda ( from his well known Canto General), music written by Patricio Wang in 2001  for the group "Rumbatá" (Amsterdam) lead by Jaime Rodríguez. This piece was part of the project "Cuatro Estaciones de Latinoamérica" in which four Latinamerican composers (Jaime Rodríguez, Juan Pablo Dobal, José Luis Lopretti, Jaime Rodríguez and Patricio Wang had to write a long piece (around 15 minutes) for a Salsa group using elements from their native countries (Colombia, Argentiba, Uruguay and Chile) and a 8 notes theme (C-D-Eb-B-A-E-Bb-C') chosen by chance by taking them from a hat by the four composers. The CD came out in 2001 and was produced by Patricio Wang and Jaime Rodríguez.

CATCH plays Patricio Wang's  SHADOWS  part 1(Tinieblas)

Patricio Wang (1952) Studied Composition, Architecture, & Sound Tecnology  at the Universidad de Chile and Composition and Classical Guitar at the Royal Conservatory of the Hague. 
He composes concert music for both soloists and ensembles. Since 1977 he has been regularly writing music for film, dance, theater and music theater. His work has been recorded by many artists.
Some of his work includes the opera a capella "Tragicomedia de don Cristóbal y doña Rosita” based on the play by F. García-Lorca; the opera "Pinocchio' for 10 singers/actors and 7 musicians for the ROTheater; the Dance-Opera "A taste ofglamour" for 4 countertenors/dansers and 4 musicians; “Two Sisters for two piano’s for the pianoduo Post & Mulder, “Schipbreuk”(Naufrage) voor het Loos Ensemble & electronics, “Shadows" for Catch Electric Guitar Quartet; "María Nuñez" Music Theater (top 5 of the best opera productions 2012-2013 in Holland)"Requiebros" for string orchestra en el. guitar; "Maria Nuñez" music theater (Theatermaker magazine's top 5 of the best opera productions 2012-2013 in Holland; "Desierto" for baritone & string orchestra on poems by Gabriela Mistral.
He has been member of various ensembles, among others BARROCO ANDINO, (Chili), AMANKAY,  HOKETUS and LOOS in Holland. Since 1981  member of the famous chilean ensemble QUILAPAYUN  and since 1990 his musical director. He is also a member of the electric guitar quartet CATCH (guest soloists with the New York Philharmonic in 2014.
As an interpreter of contemporary music he has regularly played with different ensembles and orchestras, including Ensemble Intercontemporain, Asko&Schoenberg Ensemble, Concertgebouw Orkest, Orchestre de Paris, Radio Kamer Filharmonie, Ensemble Contrechamps, Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble, Noord Nederlands Orkest, Ensemble Modern, MusikFabrik, New York Philharmonic, among others.
