Betty Ni covering "You Raise Me Up" made popular in China by Westlife. This version is a demo. It was recently recorded in Shanghai at DB Studios and engineered by Aho. The backing track was sourced on the internet, dropped three semitones, enhanced and equalized with Betty's original vocal track. The backing track doesn't belong to her and is used here without permission and with no commercial intent.

02 You Raise Me Up - Betty Ni (demo)

Betty Ni sings a traditional Ping Tan song called "Qing Tan" which translated means "Love Talk." The song is sung in Suzhou dialect and the lyrics are about a female ghost who haunts her love and tells him of her unrequited love for him. This song is usually arranged with Chinese instruments such as the Pipa and Sanxian and is part of the 400 year old Ping Tan repitoire of Suzhou style opera singing and storytelling. This version updates the arrangement with a saxophone.

01 Qing Tan - Betty Ni

Betty Ni - in Chinese: Ni Ying Chun - is a singer and actor based in Shanghai.

She usually sings in Chinese, having been trained in a traditional Chinese storytelling and opera singing style called Ping Tan. Ping Tan was very popular in 1920s & 30s Shanghai and traveled to Hong Kong in the 1950s with the Shanghai elite. 

Recently, Ping Tan has been enjoying a bit of a revival in Shanghai, Hong Kong and the rest of China, in part due to Wong Kar Wai's successful film "In the Mood for Love" released in 2000. Starring Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung, the film's soundtrack features several Ping Tan songs popular in Hong Kong in the 1960s.

Betty also likes to sing in English, having in fact learned to speak English by singing English pop songs. She decided to record "You Raise Me Up" after her son brought home a version by Westlife and played it in the car. Repeatedly!
