Simply put this piece is about texture. The definition of quintessence is the pure and concentrated essence of a substance. In this piece I tried to convey various textures using both standard notes and harmonics. Rhythm also plays a key factor by solidifying repetitive passages between the more
indulgent elements throughout. Another way texture is explored is through ‘bowing and bowing pressure’. The mixture between normal and over pressure adds dimensions not only to the sound and texture but also to the spectral element when applied to the harmonics. 

Hailing from North County Dublin, Stephen Kavanagh has been composing for the past nine years. Having finished a Bachelor of Arts in Applied Music at Dundalk Institute of Technology under David Stalling, Eibhlis Farrell and Ian Wilson. He then entered Trinity College Dublin in 2012, were he obtained an M.Phil in Music Composition under the tutelage of Evangelia Rigaki and Matthew Barnson. During this time he has worked with numerous musicians such cellist Kate Ellis, and pianist and soprano, David Bremmner and Elizabeth Hillgard. His compositions have been performed in variety of different venues with Kevin Barry Room in the NCH, The Samuel Beckett Theatre and The Project Arts Centre, to name but a few. Most recently Stephen composed a piece for the United Nations as part of their trailer for World Migratory Bird Day 2014.

"‘and so the branches began to dance’ was inspired by my observations of Zoe’s visceral playing in workshop back in November. This new work takes typical Irish traditional elements and tweaks them slightly. It is structured as a work in two parts forming an arch from sparse ambient harmonics to frantic punchy ornamented rhythms. The piece begins with an Air on harmonics centered around one simple melodic phrase which is transformed as the piece progresses. The texture gradually thickens and leads into the second section where the melodic phrase becomes more playful borrowing from different Irish dance rhythms. As the piece quickens Zoe’s tapping foot also becomes a part of the piece, allowing you to grip on to the abnormal downbeat pattern of 12 12 123 12 123 123 12. Borrowing from the popular key of D major in Irish traditional music, Zoe’s violin is detuned to F#-D-A-D to allow for increased resonance of the open strings in this very special venue." - Éna Brennan

Éna Brennan is a composer and designer based in Dublin, particularly fond of multi-disciplinary collaborations. She has an MPhil in composition from Trinity College Dublin and currently performs in multiple chamber groups and bands as a violinist. She has most recently started to write and record demos of more alternative music that she performs herself. She is also Press & Marketing Officer for the Irish Composers Collective.

Patrick Connolly is a composer and musician from County Louth. He began composing during his undergraduate degree in Applied Music from DkIT, where he also undertook an MA (by research) in composition with Dr. Eibhlís Farrell. He is currently undertaking a PhD in composition at DkIT, again studying under Dr. Farrell. He has also studied and attended master classes with Hans Abrahamsen, Ian Wilson, Kevin O’ Connell, Kevin Volans and Professor Pozzi Escot. He has composed close to 30 works for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, choir and large ensembles. His works have been performed both in Ireland and abroad by performers including the National Chamber Choir, the Hilltown Ensemble, The ConTempo Quartet, New Dublin Voices, Anne Marie O' Farrell, Bill Dowdall and Alexander Bernstein amongst others. Prizes include the Seán O’ Riada trophy in 2011 at the Cork International Choral Festival for his work Geimhridh, The West Cork Chamber Music Festival Composition Competition and the Carolyn Gianturco Scholarship for Research in 2014.
