I wanted this album to reflect what it may be like for one (myself) to fall in love while working through depression and anxiety. I also didn't want to limit myself in terms of using more synth sounds, similar to my first couple of albums.   ‘You Have to Believe We are Tragic’ starts with an atmospheric electronic ballad, appropriately titled ‘Dark,’ with guest vocals by Kari K and bass played by Glenn D. Clark who also engineered the album. That's the last of the slow songs you’ll hear. ‘Dark’ leads way to the synthy ‘Matter,’ which lyrically deals with anxiety, loneliness and love — the latter of which I had not previously approached as a reality in my songwriting. 

  Love is also a theme in the bluesy rocker ‘Untouchable,’ which continues the themes of anxiety and loneliness, while introducing drummer Rob McLennan and guitarist Jen Leigh to create an explosive climax to the first act. Leaving darker elements behind, ‘Living Man,’ is a more introspective and seemingly simple pop song that unfolds as a conversation between the protagonist and a man who just doesn't see the benefits of coming out of the closet at the possibility of ensuing ridicule and hate.   

The conversation continues on ‘Something You Said,’ a bouncy rock jam where the subject feels his best bet is to deny his true feelings as a means of avoiding any rejection that may come with being openly gay, a resignation that flabbergasts the protagonist. In ’Before The Fall,’ the protagonist later gains perspective on his own supposed failings, a song which again draws out the electro element of the album.   

I wanted there to be a balance of electronic sounds, which to me represent a singular isolated force, and live instruments, which naturally represent external forces brought in to enhance my own sound. The entirely electro ‘Before the Fall’ represents the survival of a small fish in a large pond; of making sure that only I am in control of my self worth, and if I start thinking I’m any better than anyone else, well… the concept of pride before the fall has been around much longer than I have.   

‘Good People’ was inspired by a really good group of people I spent time with under not very pleasant circumstances. The perspective is set in a drive home where another driver causes a moment of panic. After the panic subsided, I remembered the amazing people I was with moments earlier and the great person I get to go home to. When I arrive home in ‘Do Better,’ I just want to be the best person I can be for my man. And because I want to shout it from the rooftops, the song had to be a rocker with Jen Leigh’s electrifying guitar wailing behind promises of making sure I’m better than I was yesterday. 

  Album closer ‘Angry Cub’ continues on a similar theme of reflecting on how a person’s previous bad days don’t have to define their character, and how those experiences can be used to make sure you’re both a good friend and husband in the present and future. My previous instrument of choice, the piano, took a bit of a backseat on this album but makes a reprise on ‘Angry Cub’ to close it out on a positive, warm and familiar note. 

  I worked on ‘You Have to Believe We are Tragic’ for two years and I think it represents more facets of myself than I previously may have been comfortable revealing. And now that the journey is done, I’m thrilled to finally be able to share it with the world. I hope you enjoy the ride.
