The service known as the Christmas Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols is a tradition followed by Anglican and other Christian churches worldwide. Trinity began conducting this service in 1958, following the Anglican ceremony established at Kings College in Cambridge, England in 1918.

In this service, the community hears and receives the story of “God with us” through nine passages of scripture along with carols and anthems of Christmas. The Chapel Singers, the Trinity Choir, as well as student instrumentalists, lead the musical portions of the service. Readers are chosen from among the wider College community.

One Friend of the Chapel remarked that the 2010 Service of Lessons and Carols was the best he had experienced in thirty-one years at Trinity: “The singing was exquisite, with excellent intonation and with enthusiasm and conviction that was absolutely impressive. The service was beautifully balanced between readings and music, and the readers were magnificently prepared.”

This year Trinity’s Christmas Festival of Lessons and Carols was held on Sunday December 4, 2016, at 4:00 and 7:00 p.m.

The live premiere of Logos, a piece commissioned by John Rose and Trinity College's Chapel Music program to serve as the final carol of the 2016 Lessons & Carols service. 

The bulk of the piece is performed by current members of the Trinity College Chapel Singers; the male trio is the Elmsmen. In the second half of the piece, dozens of additional singers (Chapel Singers alumni and members of other current Trinity choirs) join the fray.

The organ is played by Christopher Houlihan, and the piece is conducted by John Rose.

The text is derived from the first fourteen chapters of the Gospel of John.

A composer, singer, and sound designer, Patrick Greene (b. 1985) is a rising artist in the world of contemporary art music. 

Hailed by The New York Times as a composer of “enticing” works, Mr. Greene’s music has been described as “shimmering” (New Music Box), “unearthly” (The New York Times), and constructed with “true musicality” (Boston Musical Intelligencer). Recent engagements include performances by Boston Musica Viva, the Atlanta Chamber Players, the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, loadbang ensemble, Christopher Houlihan, Transient Canvas, Balletik Duo, and many others.

His theatrical sound design has been called “disturbingly real” and “memorable” (ArtsImpulse). Recent design projects include the Boston premiere of Cassie Seinuk’s Eyes Shut. Door Open. (Wax Wings Productions) and D.W. Gregory’s Radium Girls (Flat Earth Theatre). 
Patrick’s abstractEXTRACTION won the 2010 Rapido! New England Competition (and took the Audience Prize at National Finals in 2011). In 2014, he was Guest Composer at the inaugural Birmingham New Music Festival, and, in 2015, his My Dearest Friend earned a C7Prize as a "Recommended Work."  Most recently, the St. Botolph Club Foundation selected Patrick for the 2015 Emerging Artist Award.

Mr. Greene earned his MM degree in Composition from The Boston Conservatory in May 2010, where he studied with Andy Vores and Dalit Warshaw. He graduated with a BA in Music from Trinity College in 2007, as a student of Gerald Moshell, Douglas Bruce Johnson, and John Rose.

Patrick is a member of the Society for Music Theory, the American Composers’ Forum, CompositionToday.com, and the Society of Composers, Inc. He is also a founding member of the Fifth Floor Collective and the Equilibrium Concert Series.

He lives with his wife (the actress Micah Greene) and son in Lincoln, Massachusetts, where he serves on the town's Cultural Council.
