A new single by Chicago's legendary group ONO is out in the world today. Regarding the new song, titled "Tar Baby", vocalist and lyricist, travis, wrote this:

Tar Baby:  1919 US ideas about the “nature” of Black humanity and the evolution of ideas about property (public and private), progressed from European empire. EUR trading companies of the 17th Century codified the concept of Black bodies as private, commercial property. 1602/1611: Portuguese and Spanish (Holy Roman Empire) profiteers firmly established the potential for a Black market; resulting in the creation of the first stock exchange; the Dutch East India Company/VOC. 1724: Dominican, Franciscan and Jesuit Fathers debated: (1)Do Blacks and Amer-Indians have a Soul? (2)Are they Human? (3)Are they “Natural Slaves”? The answers were fought out wherever EUR empires sought new, or expanded, sources of revenue. Then, as now: Slave Labor = Free Labor! 1791-1804: Haiti fought and won their War of Independence from France.  Nevertheless, between 1825-1947 all “civilized” world democracies forced Haiti to pay France [equivalent of] $21BILLION reparations. Racial demoralization: (a)Haiti fought and won independence from Napoleon’s enslavement. (b)Haiti’s GDP forcibly paid France, and EUR, for France’s property/capital losses. (c)Result: To this day, impoverished Haitians starve to death. Note: After outlawing slavery, Britain (1833) and France (1848) paid reparations to slave owners, as did the US from Emancipation (1863) until the 13th Amendment to the US Constitution (1865). Today, in the 21st Century, France uses the CFA Franc (Franc of the Financial Community of Africa) to demand $500 BILLION ANNUALLY, Security vs Punishment, from African countries granted “Independence” from France 50 years ago!

ONO - Tar Baby

I created this track early on the morning of 5.5.20, later that evening Jen Grady laid down a bass track, and the next day Florian Schnieder of Kraftwerk left this world.  I offer this work-in-progress as an ode to the years of meditative inspiration Florian and his band has provided me. Recorded entirely on an 8-track tape machine.
