The latest Deep Mind Music mix is a special one put together by Thailand's Sunju Hargun, as all tracks in the mix are his own productions from his Extans Mantra series. I've been a fan of Sunju's incredible Siamese Twins label since it began, and his prescient talent as a DJ, curator and producer makes him someone I'm very inspired by, and grateful to know.

This mix is a deeply healing and meditative journey, which takes the listener through immersive drones, twinkling acoustics and hazy, mystical pads, as Sunju envelops us in his sonic world. As the mix unfolds, a soft sunset slips into a warming indigo darkness, descending gently into the infinite depths of inner consciousness. There, we are washed by gentle waves of hypnagogic resonance, allowing us to enter a state of reflective peace, before fluttering arps and sunlit motes bring us to the outer world again. Sunju's emotional sensitivity in programming this mix shines through, and it feels particularly personal that he also made all of the deeply moving music in this mix.

The first Patterns of Perception mix of 2023 comes from a luminous presence and dear friend of our collective - label head, mix series curator, promoter and esteemed selector Aaron J (@arn_j).

Over the years, a combination of passion, openness and tireless energy has seen Aaron become a trusted voice for experimental, boundary-pushing electronic music across both the US and the wider scene. 

Founded over eight years ago, Aaron’s much-loved platform @sure_thing is the embodiment of his forward-thinking curation and clarity of vision. Now based in Brooklyn, Sure Thing started as a series of parties in San Francisco before growing outward, later blossoming into a renowned mix series and record label. 

As a DJ, Aaron’s level of empathy and attention-to-detail are unmistakeable, allowing him to deeply connect with the dance floor no matter the context - layering, building and driving emotions ever onwards.

Aaron J's Patterns of Perception 106 is both radiant and personal - an idyllic snapshot of the perfect dance floor, glowing with wide-eyed energy. Pensive darkness simmers into hedonistic psychedelia. Intensity turns reflective. Endless rhythms vibrate and flare into nurturing light.

Patterns of Perception 106 - Aaron J

Honored to welcome UK-based Caldera to the series, a talented and multi-dimensional producer affiliated with several of our favorite labels along with his Well Street-associated Loop LF alias. Caldera's mix is volcanic, true to form, simmering and vaporous in its first half before igniting in thunderous bloom in the second. From headiness and haze to full-blown percussive workouts, an unparalleled sense of rhythm lies at its core, seismic in its swell. Thank you Caldera!

Sure Thing Mix 123: Caldera

Producer, DJ, promoter, and @soundsofvala label head, @soundsofkaspiann's work straddles a range of paces and moods, always with an eye toward the innovative. With a lower-tempo release due early next year on an undisclosed label, Kaspiann's more recent sonic explorations wade into swampy techno with psychedelic inflections.

In Patterns of Perception 117, Kaspiann pulls you into the flow through these murky sounds that dips and stomps along, with a selection of unreleased tracks from both his and his friends' studios, along with a handful of carefully unearthed gems.

Patterns of Perception 117 - Kaspiann

Known for her hypnotic dives to the psychedelic reaches of deep techno, London-based @freyacaldwell signature style emphasises meticulous sound design and the incorporation of lush and evocative textures. 

Having graced the stages of renowned venues and festivals throughout Europe, she has appeared at prestigious locations such as Amsterdam's De School, the Positive Education Festival, and London's own Village Underground.

Faery's Patterns of Perception 118 circles around echoes, resonances and hauntings, shifting between shadowy low-ends and moments of ecstatic crescendo. Encapsulating the tension and drama held in dnb's darker edges, the mix also weaves in touches of eerie contemporary classical-esque ambient.

Patterns of Perception 118 - Faery

Hailing from Amsterdam and with De School as his homebase, @nawazworldwide’s sound is always evolving, sliding deftly from wormhole techno to fast rhythms and glitchy electronics.

His selections on this Patterns of Perception 119 melt together while also reinforcing each other, each transition subtler than the last, sometimes even employing his own tailor-made tools and tracks for the purpose.

Beginning from a visual image, this mix blends diverse rhythms and atmospheres, offering a story line from which the listener can create their own narrative, their own image, free of imposition.

Patterns of Perception 119 - Nawaz

Marking the culmination of 2023, our final mix features the debut release from one of our own, @zilkamarie. As the driving force behind comms within our collective, Zilka's music inspiration is drawn from the diverse array of artists she collaborates with.

Recorded live at Jacopo (@severja) and Fred’s (@fred-czital) Hitze party back in July, the set follows on from a daytime open air while also opening the after party. Progressing from wet, spacious ambient sounds to dubby, irresistible beats, Patterns of Perception 120 captures and plays with quintessential afterhours vibes.

Hailing from Germany and now based in Portugal, @vril_01 has in recent years been quietly producing and performing some truly extraordinary electronic music. Going from strength to strength, he takes dancefloors on vivid, compelling journeys across Europe and beyond.

Patterns of Perception 121 takes us back to a very special live ambient set .VRIL performed at @nachtdigital MINT 2019, an immersive hour of lucid textures and swelling intensity.

Zenaari's Podcast is back with a very special number, and this one’s from German juggernaut Efdemin. Phillip Sollmann’s nefarious allonym claims a well-deserved space on many a record cover and many a flyer. So large is his footprint that now, years since he first picked up a piece of hardware, or even started building his own, he’s largely liberated from the real world constraints many younger artists face. With nothing left to prove, and all this newfound freedom comes the space to truly probe the possibilities of sound in all its dimensions. This method is tried and tested (think 2019’s New Atlantis), but with each passing year the road travelled gets longer and no less full of surprises. It’s all down to his highly personal and off-centre approach - to be sure, he’s just as comfortable with feel-good techno (and his unconventional treatments make an appearance there too), but the real magic happens without preconceived ideas about genre or format, and the result is both organic and capable of opening doors no-one ever knew existed. Zenaari Mix 013 is a mind-maze in sound, from gentle piano and theremin allusions, to spoken narratives and dialogues that anticipate the world to come, and of course, there are Sollmann’s beloved bells. This is fresh ground trodden, Efdemin bravely charging into the unknown, a strange and spiritual palette of sounds from one of electronic music’s most iconoclastic figures.
