A raver since his teenage years in Australia, Hysteria (@imhysteria) began experimenting with turntables and (later) software and hardware only around five years ago, quickly finding himself thriving off the unique possibilities DJing offered to move people physically, emotionally, and intellectually. 

As one of the co-creators and resident DJs of Patterns of Perception, Hysteria has crafted a niche for himself as a selector of genre-bending techno, coupled with a unique, ever-changing collage of sounds drawn from across the electronic music spectrum.

Patterns of Perception 58 is exactly that, an excursion through an interstellar rave, from one dimension to the next. Stripped back techno, broken rhythms, and electro grooves.

@mirella-kroes’ presence in the Dutch techno scene is unmistakeable. Growing up on a diet of the tough, loop-oriented techno characteristic of the north of Holland where she was born, Kroes moved to Amsterdam as her musical horizons began to expand. Having cut her DJ teeth at iconic clubs such as Doornroosje, Trouw, Studio 80 and Cruquiusgilde, she now enjoys exploring musically deep, trippy soundscapes and organically building narratives that use space to upset conventional club rubrics.

Delving into ambient, breaks, electronica, experimental and IDM, her Patterns of Perception 59 perfectly manifests these qualities: a sonically diverse, luminescent mix best suited to private spaces, long journeys, and far-away places.

Patterns of Perception 59 - Mirella Kroes

Hailing from Naples and well-known as one half of @naturalelectronicsystem, Antonio Giova is a selector and producer of unparalleled talent and vision. Over the course of a career spanning over 1.5 decades, and which includes a tight relationship with the esteemed record label @tikitarec, a collaboration with @neel, and key performances at festivals such as Labyrinth (@mindgameslaby), @wakinglifeportugal and @parallelfestival, Antonio has developed a unique sense of texture, atmosphere and narrative which glows deeply in both his productions and his mixes.

Based on his set from our Winter Edition party at ://about.blank in late-February 2020, Antonio let his intuition guide him with this Patterns of Perception 60. The outcome is somehow both raw and seamless, a vignette of ethereal proportions: eternal and infinite, timeless and dimensionless.

Patterns of Perception 60 - Antonio Giova

Growing up in the countryside of the Netherlands, Matthijs Verschuure found himself surrounded by endless polder horizons, green fields and the sea. It didn’t take long however for @mattheis to find his residence in the industrial harbour town of Rotterdam, where he further developed his synthesizer explorations and crafted his propulsive, hypnotic sound.

The @nousklaeraudio mainstay signed his first release “Isms” with the label in early 2013, followed by a handful of EP’s, remixes and two studio-albums; “Kindred Phenomena” (2016) and “Thin Sections” (2018). His most recent works include collaborations with French label @ahrperecords founder Amandra (@amandraaa), plus a solo EP “A Falcon’s Eyrie” (2020).

Mattheis' Patterns of Perception 61 expands on his modus operandi in the studio, featuring rolling waves of insistent rhythms drenched in a deep ambience of atmospheric sounds, with a focus on subtle changes serving the greater whole of the recording.

You might already be familiar with Resom (@resi-resom)’s story: originally from the German state of Thuringia, she started out throwing parties in abandoned spaces in Leipzig, the city that was central to her musical education. Since moving to Berlin, she’s found a home as a resident DJ at ://about blank. Along the way, she’s become a prominent voice in the electronic music scene, both musically and politically, believing the politics is as important to expression and communication as the music itself. 

Her Patterns of Perception 62 is part of a sound triptych of three connected mixes, a series that both explores and reflects her feelings about this difficult collective moment of ours. Unlike the diverse and eclectic party sets for which she has become known, here she takes it down a gear and delivers an ambient mix embedded in nature - offering up the perfect soundtrack for a walk in the woods, a long meditative run, or just quiet home reflection as we adjust to the new world order.

Patterns of Perception 62 - Resom

Samuel van Dijk a.k.a. VC-118A’s achingly beautiful melancholic moods and roomy, absorbing grooves have distinguished him as one of the Netherlands’ most compelling talents.

With releases on @delsinrecords, @frustratedfunk, @tabernacle-records, @astralindustries and @silent-season, van Dijk’s productions play with contrasting textures and moods to construct distinctive soundscapes fusing elements of electro, techno, dub, and ambient. His thrilling, immersive performances at Tresor and Griessmuehle (Berlin), Fuse (Brussels), Concrete (Paris) and Trouw (Amsterdam), as well as festivals such as @parallelfestival under his numerous aliases (VC-118A, Mohlao, @multicastdynamics) have further cemented his status as a master craftsman, his unique sound eluding classification.

Van Dijk’s Patterns of Perception 63 sees him strip the VC-118A sound back to the essentials, blending contrasting elements in a science-fiction inspired exploration of abstract worlds, decompression, and escape. This stark, intricately-realised and captivating ambient-focused selection takes the listener to distant, eerily familiar and hauntingly beautiful places.

Patterns of Perception 63 - VC-118A

Born in Ploiesti, Romania, on the cusp of the Romanian Revolution, @andusimion’s artistic vision, which encompasses both music and photography, is shaped by the grey blocks of his childhood neighbourhood, industrialisation, and the remnants of a communist era that was receding just as he was arriving in the world. Influenced by the Romanian minimal movement, he has crafted his own distinctive talent for crafting deep, acid-infused journeys.

With releases on Atipic, Insound Recordings, Particular, Palinoia, Stela Music and Polen, Simion is also one third of @Lisiere-Collectif, which he founded with Bogdan Ardeleanu and Dan Gheorghe.

His Patterns of Perception 64 emerges from the aftermath of the sudden loss of his father some weeks ago. The intensity and energy of this set is marked by turmoil and introspection, with higher BPMs and more aggressive mixes reflective of the grief he has been facing. Simion has had this selection of music on repeat since his father’s passing, using its energy to carry him forwards and out into the sunlight again.

As an exciting fixture of the vibrant Helsinki scene, Suski (@suskidj) is a selector who is driven by an intuitive and curious nature. While her sound finds a solid twin foundation in both minimal and dub techno, her explorations go much further, with her vivid, psychedelic selections offering both tension and release. 
Throughout her years on the circuit, a reverence for collective unity has not only inspired her thrilling, versatile sets but has also seen her take the stage at Helsinki institutions such as @postbar, Kaiku and Flow Festival. Outside the club setting, Suski is co-founder of @electronicmarket - a booking agency and collective which seeks to increase awareness of and provide support for underrepresented artists in the electronic music industry. 

Suski’s Patterns of Perception 65 both embraces and celebrates diversity as an intricately and intuitively crafted tapestry of moods, textures and sounds. Covering genres as far flung as IDM, dubstep, house - and of course minimal and dub techno - these 73 minutes are an unpredictable and rousing inner voyage that matches deep, subtle textures with soulful, bright grooves from decades past. Scattered throughout are sonic postcards from close friends and counterparts from Suski’s beloved Helsinki scene. Combined, these act as a tribute to the city and the dynamic talent at its core.

@laurabcr picked up her first pair of turntables as a teenager in the south of France. Yet despite collecting music assiduously since childhood, it was only in around 2013 that she began to treat the outside world to her immense skills as a DJ and selector. Having worked as a booking agent, record store owner (Bass Cadet Records, Berlin) and since 2015 head of @on-board-music, her deep and lifelong immersion in music manifests in the supreme depth and breadth of her musical selections, which show influences of jazz, ambient, rock, folk, and of course techno. After several years on the move, Laura has now found herself in Berlin once again - the ideal place from which her skills and sophistication as a DJ can emanate.

We’re very happy to welcome Laura back onto Patterns of Perception. Her transfixing, groove-laden set at our Two Year birthday party in 2018 remains embedded in our memories, and we’re glad to be able to share another side of her distinctive sound.

Drawing on a recent collaboration with Buenos Aires-based video artist Santiago Rojo for NYC-based Public Records TV, entitled Light & Sea, the works that comprise this Patterns of Perception 66 are delicately woven into a contemplative, meditative body of work that explores the concept of travel - a pertinent theme for the restricted, static world we currently find ourselves in.

Patterns of Perception 66 - Laura BCR

Hailing from Wales but a resident of Japan for the past 25 years, Steve Good has, in various forms, been involved with music for his entire life. From classical violin through just about every genre imaginable, he finally found himself sucked into the vortex of London’s rave scene in the 90s. After moving to Tokyo in ’95, he started work at a recording studio, producing, mixing, mastering, remixing and programming music for artists, bands, games, and TV commercials, while simultaneously DJing for clubs and parties and producing via his own downtempo project, Puff Dragon. Involved in Labyrinth since its beginnings, Steve takes responsibility for that festival’s legendary sound quality.

After moving to the wild northern-Japanese island of Hokkaido in 2012 with his family, he found natural inspiration for what is now recognised as the Labyrinth sound. The epic beauty and remoteness of this icy, rock-covered isle on the north-west corner of the Pacific Ocean became the inspiration for Steve’s musical explorations of the interplay between the human and the natural, creating a huge and lasting effect on both his own musical output and the indelible artistic mark of Labyrinth Festival.

This present live set grew out of a phase of sadness and listlessness Steve experienced as the upheavals of 2020 ricocheted across the globe. In the absence of those usually unnoticed markers of the passage of time, anchor points drift and the moorings that ground opportunities for perspective and insight flit and vanish. Yet in this sea of disorientation, the plants continue to grow, rivers flow, waves crash, and the seasons keep on turning. In place of what appeared to be missing arises the possibility of experiencing each moment in its sublime evanescence. Steve Good’s Patterns of Perception 67 is forest music, mountain music, lake music. It holds chaos and beauty within it, transporting the listener to places both on the edge, and at the core, of the fleeting beauty of existence.

After witnessing his ethereal, truly moving opening set on day two of last year’s Labyrinth festival, this mix is a uniquely personal one for our collective. We’re delighted to welcome Steve onto our platform to share his inimitable musical vision.

Woody92’s (@woodyninetytwo) upbringing in Delft, wedged between the much-larger and musically more iconic cities of Rotterdam and The Hague, gave him  glimpses of psychedelic techno, mystical ambient, free tribal tekno, push-forward goa and psy-trance that influenced his musical development, while also allowing him the space to grow and explore on his own musical terms. Now a respected DJ at home and abroad, his ability to capture an audience while remaining true to his experimental dispositions is unparalleled and unwavering. Meanwhile, his visual art and fashion studies at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague have sharpened a visual aesthetic that runs in parallel with his musical development, going some way to explaining the rich visual imagery that his musical work is able to generate. 

With residencies at Garage Noord and, before it sadly closed its doors earlier this year, De School, Woody92 has left a deep mark on the Dutch underground scene, thanks to his truly unique syntheses of the meditative, tribal, transcendental, and trippy. All of these influences can be heard (and perhaps – if you close your eyes – seen) in his Patterns of Perception 68, with its deep and glitchy rhythms combining with trippy and more experimental sounds to create a deeply intelligent and intricately arranged selection, bridging textured experimental with propulsive techno, breaks and beyond.

@citizenmaze, a.k.a. Adam McCoy, is among the most interesting talents to emerge from Melbourne in recent years. As an artist, much of his work explores the interplay between ambient sounds, acoustic instrumentation and dance music, creating lush, beautiful compositions which also find a natural fit as sophisticated club pieces. 

This approach was perfectly highlighted in his 2018 release on @analogueattic, Serenity In The Woods. Produced using a gaming laptop, a motorised Beringher mixer, and Fruity Loops, this EP showcases richly textured, intricate soundscapes, and blended field recordings with organically percussive grooves and live instrumental elements - all drenched in some of the most sublime-sounding pads we’ve had the pure pleasure of hearing. 

On the horizon for 2020-21 is the release of a second EP on Analogue Attic, plus the launch of Adam's own label, Mirror Tapes, which promises to delve deeper into the intersection of ambient sounds, dance music and experimental sound design.

This mix for Patterns of Perception, recorded alone at home on a stormy isolation-period night, also showcases Adam’s masterful attention to texture and soundscape, but in rhythmical terms brings more energy and intensity. Seemingly effortless shifts between tempos and genres flow organically, yet never muddy the distinctive atmosphere – both industrial and dreamy – present throughout the recording.

Patterns of Perception 69 - Citizen Maze

For Amsterdam-based Mary Lake (@marylakeworld), expression and eclecticism are vital. With an international upbringing spanning Algeria, France and the Netherlands, her musical passion finds voice in diversity and exploration, with sounds as far-flung as folk, world music and electronica finding an easy balance within her palette. 
Beginning life as a DJ within London’s underground scene and on NTS, Mary quickly became a regular on the Dutch circuit upon her return in 2017. In a club setting, her sound is truly compelling, with frenetic techno and electro rhythms blending effortlessly with left-field experimentations. 
Following appearances at Dekmantel (@dkmntl) and Lowlands festivals, as well as at many renowned venues at home in the Netherlands and abroad in cities like Berlin and Melbourne, hers is truly a star on the rise. 

Mary’s Patterns of Perception 70 is in some ways reflective of the challenges that we all face during these difficult times. With nightlife momentarily on hold, a major source of energy and inspiration has been stripped from the scene, and from life in general. For Mary, listening to her favourite music from before the onset of Covid-19 is a difficult experience, with much of it being inextricably linked to her pre-pandemic life. When preparing her mix, this forced her to rethink her taste and find inspiration elsewhere, providing the impetus to both dig deeper and look inwardly to find a deeper connection with her true self.

The resulting set is a diverse and energy-infused personal voyage that traverses a vivid spectrum of techno and breakbeat sounds. It perfectly captures Mary’s signature frenetic sound, while also embracing the optimism and simple pleasure of the living in the moment, no matter how difficult that might seem.

The beautiful German word Tausendsassa (which translates to “jack of all trades” in English) feels like a perfectly apt term to describe the deep and wide-reaching artistic talent of Vivian Koch (@kochvivian).
Based in Berlin, her growing presence has been felt across the city - and the wider scene - since the inception of her interdisciplinary arts collective Olympe Fatale in 2017. Encompassing DJs, musicians, visual artists and designers, the collective found a fitting home base at the lauded and much loved Berlin institution @Griessmuehle, where they hosted memorable performances from the likes of Cosmin @TRG, @minor-science, @donwilliamsofficial, @upsammy and @mohlao/VC-118a. 

As a highly skilled producer in her own right, Vivian’s distinctive voice is both rich and emotive. Finding a foundation in electro-driven percussion and rhythms, her music dives still deeper, diverging from standard club fare and embracing textured, melancholic synths and non-linear narrative storytelling. With releases on Don Williams’ A.R.T.less Records, and @dannydaze’s @omnidisc, Vivian has cemented her place as a breakout producer with a compelling story to tell.

With Patterns of Perception 71, Vivian has taken a step back to piece together a textured, delicate ambient soundscape comprising of favourites, both new and old. Driven by a feeling that the world has remained as noisy and loud a place as ever - despite the recent chance to regroup and reflect - Vivian wanted to create a musical refuge of hope, calm and peace to inspire escape and rejuvenation.

Composed of a palette of natural, experimental textures, delicate instrumentation and subtle, uplifting melodies, this mix is a beautiful, indelibly optimistic journey that absolutely delivers on its goal: to soothe the heart and mind through challenging times.

Patterns of Perception 71 - Vivian Koch

Growing up in one of the Netherlands' quieter nooks, @tammohesselink’s unwavering passion for music saw him spend countless hours of his youth in his attic, digging, researching and building up a profoundly deep knowledge and love of electronic music. Eventually, this singular passion lead Tammo out of his attic and into his local record store “Deeptrax”, where the guys behind the counter helped to refine his taste further, indoctrinating him to the sounds of Chicago, Detroit, Berlin and The Hague. Over time, Tammo very naturally found himself working at the store, where his taste continued to both deepen and expand, with a growing appreciation for a diverse range of sounds including UK-centred post-dubstep, leading to the distinctive, genre-bending approach he is known for today.

As a producer, Tammo has developed an outstanding body of work under a range of alias’ since the mid-2010’s, first releasing via his own imprint “The Invariants” before seeing his music published on famed Dutch platforms @delsinrecords and @nousklaeraudio in more recent years. Although there may be variations in sound and approach between his projects, one constant is a solid sense for warm, resonant groove which filters through the many aspects of his music - from light-hearted arpeggiated synths, to organic, intricately programmed percussion. 
Tammo carries this same quality into his DJ sets, which has enabled him to take the stage at events such as Breakfast Club and Dekmantel Selectors, and also to become a resident at the now sadly closed De School.

This rhythmically diverse mix for Patterns of Perception channels Tammo’s inimitable sound and musical insight, building from a deep, measured beginning, before gathering energy and momentum further into the mix. The result is a fiercely arresting 83 minutes of music that takes the listener on a winding narrative journey through varied and utterly compelling club music.

Patterns of Perception 72 - Tammo Hesselink

Hardly a newcomer, Amsterdam-based producer and DJ, @eversines, has been working on the scene’s periphery for more than a decade. As a co-organiser of Dutch label @delichting, he has truly immersed himself within music, garnering his own sound with a kinetic verve and dream-like quality.
In 2019, the artist saw his first debut release with @wexrecords, followed by a solo EP and an LP in collaboration with theremin player, @carolinaeyck, on @ye_yeh. More recently, he has teamed up with @kalaharioystercult to deliver ‘Plooi’.

In true Eversines form, Patterns of Perception 73 is a diverse compilation, comprised solely of the artist’s own music. Weaving his house-leaning productions with lucid, down-tempo beats, this mix conjures a longing for those beloved after hour moments, which for now, are safely guarded by our memories.

Patterns of Perception 73 - Eversines

Melbourne duo @HTRK (Nigel Yang & Jonnine Standish) have a well-storied history reaching back nearly two decades. From a back-catalogue comprising of significant releases on imprints like @Ghostly International, Mistletone and Boomkat Editions, collaborations with luminaries such as Mika Vainio, Rowland S. Howard & @benfrost, and appearances at numerous key events around the globe (including the legendary @berlinatonal festival, Krakow's @unsound and Vivid at the Sydney Opera House), their impact on a vast array of listeners and scenes is indelible and difficult to overstate.

As a two-piece band, their melancholic, sensual music lies roughly at the intersection of post-punk, no-wave, shoegaze and art-rock, with influences from IDM, industrial, noise, dub-techno, pop and beyond. Indeed, it is this eclectic palette, combined with deep knowledge and curiosity that has recently seen them contribute a captivating ambient score for Jeffrey Peixoto's documentary "Over the Rainbow" and regularly deliver genre-defying mixes on platforms like @secretthirteen and NTS.

A starting theme and departure point for HTRK's Patterns of Perception 74 is the ocean. This intricately assembled collection of music finds a natural ebb and flow amongst rich, organic synths and delicate abstract melodies. Building from a slow and introspective beginning, the duo intuitively and carefully guide the narrative to also incorporate gentle energy and a sense of strangeness. 
Viewed holistically, this mix is invigorating and luxuriously diverse, with a true chameleonic quality that allows the listener to take something different from every listen.

Patterns of Perception 74 - HTRK

@myles-mac is perhaps best known as co-founder and curator of trusted electronic music platform and mix series @melbourne-deepcast, but his list of credentials stretches much longer than that. A fixture of Melbourne’s underground for the past decade, Myles has cemented his reputation as a respected DJ and curator through both Melbourne Deepcast and his famed Lost Weekend club nights. His eclectic and diverse selections - both as an individual DJ and as one half of the 90s house duo Project 95 (@proj95) - have meanwhile earned him space on lineups across Australia and overseas. 

While Myles, like many of us, has found a sense of calm in downtempo and ambient music the last few months, in his Patterns of Perception 75 he switches gears. Here, Myles seamlessly fuses some of his favourite fast, spacey techno and energised broken rhythms with moments of pure, atmospheric euphoria. The resulting hour and a half feels like a triumphant return to the club: offering both a brief escape from our current moment and a much needed reminder of the energy that can only be created by a dance floor in full flow.

With a style forged in the ’90s Midwest rave scene, Patrick Russell(@ptrckrssll)'s Detroit-bred origins are still very much on show today. Now based in New York, he has found a harmony between retaining his acid-driven musical influences and broadening his palette towards the deeper and more psychedelic. A @thebunkerny resident and Labyrinth (@mindgameslaby) Festival regular, and still a key figure of Detroit’s famed No Way Back parties, Patrick has gained what borders on legendary status within the international electronic music community through a combination of integrity, hard work and uncompromising ability to weave storytelling into his work as both DJ and producer. 

Like many artists, his recent selections have ventured away from the dance floor – with the COVID era offering a freedom of exploration that’s on full show in his Patterns of Perception 76. Of the mix, Patrick says: “For some time now, I’ve been sitting on a number of tracks around the 75/150 BPM axis that I’ve been dying to play, and wanted to do so without venturing into full-on techno or electro. This seemed like the right opportunity to present them, and also throw in a few curve balls while I was at it. Challenge accepted.”

Followers of ambient music will no doubt know Ario as the man behind @astralindustries, the revered label that fuses reissued work with new releases from some of the most exciting artists in the genre. Despite the challenges thrown up by 2020, this year alone has seen AI releases from @multicastdynamics, The Chi Factory and Waveform Transmission, among others, and 2021 already promises to be even more prolific for both the label and its boss. 

Yet London-based Ario is just as much a DJ in his own right, with a sound that evades neat categorisation: drawn to the “deeply ritualistic and primal” side of drone, yet partial to the occasional dance floor set, he is reluctant to get too concrete when discussing his own music. His Patterns of Perception 77 is designed to challenge the listener – built on the belief that, contrary to what many may think, an ambient set is not necessarily designed to soothe and subdue.
