Sweep The Floor

Main parts --- nylon and steel string acoustic with some electric guitar overdubs later. A kind of study, with some almost experimental electric guitar ornaments. Recovered the acoustic guitar files, fixed them up, and glued it together! A bit of unevenness in the quality means best on earphones I think.

Pas Glop - Guit Solo

Reach Out is a song about love and friendship in the midst of tragedy. It could be war, or the pandemic, or any circumstances where two people try to make it work, against the odds. We probably all have such a story. The resilience from close friendship always comes…so long as we continue to reach out. 

The song was written a while ago, and sung with Jen Di Biasi; it started with some arpeggios on my classical guitar (C maj 9, G sus2/B, Am7), and some sketchy vocal lines. I’ve come back to it periodically, always building in new ideas and layers…but I think this baby is ready now! It’s got an 80s rock ballad feel I guess, with a little dancing section just past half way!

Reach Out

Here's a jazz original.  I'm joined by the wonderful Sam Mendez, Georg Boehme, and Al Schulman.   Such a great sound with both the flute and Bari ranges and timbers and Al's showing off on such fine rhythm guitar and soloing.  Sam is no longer with us and never got a chance to hear this.  This smile's for you Sam.

Second part of my father trilogy.
This song is based on a dream I had a good 20 years ago with my father, who had been dead for some time. 
I am in a dimly lit room. It's just me and somehow my father's energy body. At some point, this invisible energy body comes towards me. Then we embrace. It is a merging embrace. Something deep inside me releases and makes me cry. It's not so much a sad cry, but a liberating, soothing cry that pacifies me completely. 
Since this dream, the grudge I harboured against him for a long time has largely disappeared.     
Somehow he has been there inside me since then and I can sometimes visit him (even in dreams) when I want to talk to him.

The arrangement of the song is deliberately minimalist (just vocals, guitar and violin, hardly any effects) in order to emphasise the tremendous intimacy of the encounter between my father and me in the dream described above (there is no longer a "leaf" between us).

Softly as in a Morning Sunrise

I enjoy composing, arranging and recording music on an ever-expanding array of guitars, especially Fender electrics and Martin acoustics.  My musical journey began more than half a century ago, and every day brings new opportunities for continued growth as a musician.  My current leading influences include Jim Campilongo, Scotty Anderson and Guthrie Trapp.  I love Beethoven, Keith Richards, Henry Mancini, Aretha Franklin and a thousand others whose music has brought me joy, whether for many decades or for a few minutes.  I strive to learn something from every piece of music that I hear, and to make music that others will enjoy hearing.

I'm an amateur DIYer in terms of recording, doing everything in my music space at home and learning as I go.  I enjoy experimenting with a variety of microphones and mic placements, recording into a Zoom R16 and using Audacity as my DAW.  I use an array of Fender tube amps, all blackface/silverface reissues, and a modest pedal board.  I record acoustic instruments either with condenser microphones directly on the instruments or else amped through a Fishman Loudbox Mini.
