System 7: Alpha Wave (Plastikman Acid House Mix) (1995) BFLD25

SYSTEM 7 provide the conscious link between the techno and house explosion of the 80s and its European psychedelic antecedents of the 70s, and have had a strong influence on the birth of psychedelic dance music and its journey up to the present.

Consistently progressive, System 7’s central producers - guitarist Steve Hillage and keyboardist Miquette Giraudy - have forged a unique and bang up-to-date identity on the dance music genre map, in a space where techno, progressive and trance meet – with a healthy side-element of unique quality ambient chill. This chill element is further developed in their sister project Mirror System.

As one of the first techno groups to play live, System 7 have also had a strong influence on the development of the dance music festival scene, particularly in the UK, and are big festival favourites playing regularly around the world.

Since the beginning of the 90s System 7 projects have been marked by a series of high powered collaborations, working with Detroit luminaries Derrick May and Carl Craig, Laurent Garnier, The Orb, Jam El Mar, and Son Kite among others. System 7’s club singles have had outstanding remixes from the likes of Plastikman, James Holden, Dubfire and Liquid Soul.

The most recent single “PositiveNoise” is a collaboration with A Guy Called Gerald and has remixes by Carl Craig and A.Mochi and another groundbreaking animation video by Japanese team Mood Magic. This track is taken from the new System 7 album “UP” released in June 2011, a lot of which was written and produced in Berlin.

i've been meaning to post this online for a while, but the 30th anniversary of metro/smartbar chicago got me in the mood. it's a live mix (or mashup as the kids say nowadays) of two very long songs that i discovered go together quite well: ORBITAL's "impact USA" + SYSTEM 7 "alphawave (plastikman rmx)". from the end of a long ABSTRACT SCIENCE djs set opening up for BOOKASHADE in 2009. honored that one my most inspired DJ moments happened at the METRO! happy birthday metro smartbar! congratulations from abstract science + thanks to JOE, CHRIS, JOE, LENNY, NATE, KYLE, JAMES, ORI, BRAD, MICAH, TODD, RODERICK, JENNY, STEVE, RYNE, ADAM, JOHN + all the great staff we've worked with over the years.

System 7 is the dancefloor project of Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy.

Their style hovers between trance, techno and progressive house - with a unique spacey character that is deeply psychedelic without being typical psy-trance - and the added element of Steve's highly specialised techno guitar.

System 7's music also has a distinctive ambient element, which they've recently developed into a separate downtempo project called Mirror System.

The most recent System 7 worldwide CD releases are Encantado (AAWCD009) and Live Transmissions (AAWCD010), also available worldwide on iTunes, together with the iTunes exclusive Planet 7 digital LP.

System 7 play regularly at major dance events around the world and the Live Transmissions CD - recorded in Japan - perfectly captures their powerful live sound.

The new album Phoenix (AAWCD012), which is heavily influenced by the cosmic manga stories of Osamu Tezuka, was released in the UK on January 28th 2008 with the single Space Bird released January 21st 2008 on vinyl 12" and Beatport. The Dubfire mix of Space Bird was number 1 on the Beatport main chart for 2 weeks.

Now freshly served up in June 2010 comes the timely re-release of classic tracks AlphaWave (Plastikman Acid House Mix) and High Plains Drifter (Voyager Remix)

System 7 - Space Bird (Dubfire's unreleased remix) cut

Following on from 2011’s joyful techno-orientated album UP, System 7 hit the spot with their new Passion EP – showing that in 2012 they remain on top of their game with their unique blend of trance and techno.

The third track on the EP is connected to a new project System 7 are doing with Japanese rock jam-band Rovo called “Phoenix Rising”, which is based on Rovo making live versions of System 7 tunes and System 7 making techno versions of Rovo tunes. The two bands made a highly successful tour of Japan in 2011, where they morphed between the different versions, inspiring a new collaborative ‘Phoenix Rising’ album to be released in autumn 2013 and another tour for that time in both Japan and UK/Europe. This ethereal guitar-driven stripped down tech track provides a taster – and displays the interesting sonic combination of Steve Hillage’s lead guitar and the electric violin of Rovo’s Yuji Katsui.

"Kupuri" is a word from the language of the Mexican Huichol Indians, meaning the power to to follow your heart path to completion. The groove of this song is inspired by the ragga "Diwali riddim" mixed with Middle Eastern percussion. Rather than an ambient track we see this track as a slow spacey techno track. Fans of glissando guitar please note - there is a rather tasty glissando performance on this piece.

This track uses some sounds first used on a track from the first System 7 album in 1991 in collaboration with Alex Paterson, who is credited here as a co-writer. Another exploration of the interesting territory between prog house and psy-trance, this track also has an openly old school bleepy rave feel to it that pays homage to the original acid-house explosion of the late 80s. "A revolution in attitude - a revolution in consciousness" - a concept that is ever more needed today in this time of senseless wars and global stupidity.
