Songs with a bit more polish than my Jamuary stuff. Some are stand-alone projects, others started life as a Jamuary track and ended up getting revisited.

Jamuary 2025

Inspired by one of my Jamuary 2025 tracks of the same name, I wanted to explore some of the structure and feel of that track more thoroughly, to see where the rushed idea that I had during Jamuary might take me if I gave it a bit more time to marinate and expand.

Found the sample of stuff being dropped and crashed around and everything just sort of flowed from there. We'll see if I still like it in a day or two.

Jamuary 03 24 - Cacio E Pepe

Gear: Wavestate, Zoia, Deluge

Running the wavestate through the "loop forest" patch on the zoia, with the deluge providing just enough bass to keep things on track. I might be addicted to the shakuhachi patch on the wavestate, it sounds so nice...

Jamuary 14 24 - Dispel

Still a bit wiped out. I put together chord progressions I like for a verse and a chorus, threw together a little solo over the chorus, and... that's about all I have energy for tonight. I may come back to this at some point, as I do like the chords quite a bit and feel like there's a good song here

Gear: Deluge, wavestate

Whew, I really had no inspiration today. Played with the wavestate's randomize function until I hit something to start with, but still didn't get far and settled for a little doodle.

Another track that started life in Jamuary 2024, I changed the arrangement a bit, added a little more chaos, and re-recorded.

Up late, playing my electric bass thru the zoia. Hit record because I was enjoying what was coming out.

What better way to start off an uncertain year than with an uneasy sound, right? I've been messing around with the whole tone scale, which gives things this ambiguous feel.

We soothed ourselves with the easy lie that  its awakening was forever in the future. But on this awful day, that lie has crumbled, and the inexorable truth has descended upon us.

I especially like this track because I put together that main patch from scratch. I feel like I’ve been leaning into more ominous sounds and themes so far this year, and this is a nice little break from that.

Jamuary 04 25 - Riffle

Gear: Deluge, Zoia

Loaded up a kit with dozens and dozens of samples of clicks and blips and mangled it through the zoia. This produced a liquidy sound that conjured an image of swimming in an ocean full of debris (aka the ocean). Recorded a few vocal samples to go along with it, and here we are, in the incredible world of tomorrow.

Jamuary 05 25 - The Future is Now

Put together the bassline, then sort of stuggled to do anything with it. Eventually decided on doing it as a spoken word piece, which I like much more than I thought I would.

Jamuary 07 25 - Hell

Gear: deluge

I found a field recording of someone trudging down a gravel path a few days ago, and thought it would be a good foundation to try to do something inspired by Droid’s work. Then damn if he don’t go and release a jam with a similar field recording on the same day! I decided to give it a shot anyway, doing my best to maintain a delicate touch and a Phrygian scale.

Took a shot at making something almost entirely percussive.

Jamuary 11 25 - Brambles

It’s not jamuary if I’m not doing things in weird time signatures, right? This track uses a few of cuckoo’s multisamples off the megaFM that help give it that metallic, buzzy edge that I seem to be into this year.

Jamuary 12 25 - Bent Circuit

I love how weird and spacey Lydian mode can sound, especially with the right textures. That wasn’t weird enough on its own, so I put things in 5/4 time. That *still* wasn’t weird enough, so I switched to a 5:4 polyrhythm to make time more ambiguous and set the whole thing adrift. I like the contrast between the sharp percussive sounds and how floaty everything else is.

Jamuary 13 25 - Moon Jelly Blacksmith

The Giant Claw is a cheesy monster movie from the 50s with a ridiculous, hideous bird puppet for a monster that I just love to death. An ode seemed like an appropriate Jamuary entry.

Jamuary 14 25 - Giant Claw

Dusted off the ol’ Volca FM for this one. I got a nice sound from running it through the deluge with a couple of effects and just decided to improvise with that and a little bit of a beat.

Jamuary 16 25 - Starball Projector

This feels like it’s in the same universe as whatever’s going on in “Inexorable.” I found that opening sample, built the swirling pad from scratch, then just ran with whatever sounded good with those. I'm extremely happy with how this turned out!

Experimenting with the hirajoshi scale a bit. I kind of inadvertently ended up using the 4th mode of the scale, which gives it an even stranger vibe. I'll almost certainly be coming back to this one.

Jamuary 22 25 - Hirajoshi Dreams

Low on creative energy today, so I decided to just make a basic house track so I could mess with some of the new community firmware stuff I haven’t had a chance to look at yet. Not much of that fiddling made it into the recording, but you do hear some punch-in fx with the HPF and decimation.

Ran my bass thru a few different patches on the zoia and just threw a raw little jam together.

Jamuary 25 25 - Wail

I put a lot of sounds and loops together that I like, but didn't really get the arrangement to a decent spot before I ran out of gas. I still like it a lot!

Jamuary 26 25 - Atomizer

I know ppl liked it, and I'm not saying it was a bad track, but for whatever reason, for me, my track a few days ago, "This ol' House" just didn't properly scratch the house itch.

So. When I came across this drum loop, I knew immediately that I was going to do another house track. I had a bit more gas in the tank for this one, so there are a lot more bells and whistles, and I just generally feel more satisfied with it. Enjoy!

Jamuary 27 25 - Lost

Still fiddling with the deluge’s grain effects. I combined them here with some wavetables to get a nice shimmery, glittery sound that I like a lot. Didn’t really have the juice to make even a basic arrangement, so this is a live take off the cuff.

Jamuary 29 25 - Fire Sale

I realized that I haven’t done any sort of techno this year, so I decided to address that with a very laid back track. I always have Jeremy Blake’s “Cast in Amber” in mind when I set out to make a track like this. It’s the album that got me interested enough in making electronic music to go out and actually buy a synth.

Jamuary 30 25 - Facets

It's the last day of Jamuary! We did it!

I had the idea to try to make a track with as many reversed sounds as good taste would allow. The deluge’s resample functionality is really great and made this a fun project. I fiddled around a bit, but once I put together that baseline, it was off to the races. I might have to expand this one, I like it a lot!

Jamuary 31 25 - Revved Up

Today's actual Jamuary track got taken down because SC's automated systems decided it sounded exactly like a song that sounds nothing like it. I've filed a dispute, but don't expect anything to actually come of it.

Jamuary 25 B-Sides - PVC

Another B-side track from an over-productive Saturday along the way. Lots of cool bits and pieces here, but again, ran out of gas on the arrangement.

And with that, depending on if/when my Jan 31 track makes it out of impound, Jamuary 2025 is a wrap! Been a hell of a year, can't believe how much music we've all made in 31 days.

Now that the madness is over, I'll be re-listening to a lot of people's music over the next few days, so hopefully more commentary will be forthcoming!

As for the rest of the year, I've already started laying out a couple of EPs based on jamuary stuff, and you never know when the muse might strike on other projects.
