Back in the early to mid 2000s I used Yahoo! services and came across someone with a very strange profile. Admittedly, I can't remember exactly what it was about them that stood out; it could have been a strange profile picture (I seem to remember someone wearing a mask similar to the one pictured,) or that they had a strange way of writing, or probably both.

Yahoo profiles supported the ability to upload a voice clip of yourself, which made for some (oftentimes)hilarious discoveries... but this one was just strange. The tone and cadence of this person's voice, sounding almost robotic, stood out to me from the first time I heard it. I decided to download the audio file from their profile, where it's been passed from hard drive to hard drive for over 10 years now.

I have never been able to identify the source of this audio, which is transcribed as follows:

"We are friends, you and I... and we will never hurt each other. I can reach for your hand in the dark. You can call out to me... and I'll answer."
