Blood Dance comes from the larger oud concerto, Blood, by Gordon McPherson. Here, Khyam Allami, the National Youth Orchestra of Iraq and myself premiere it in NYOI's UK 2012 tour at Greyfriars Kirk, Edinburgh. It revolutionises and modernises the instrument in a powerful statement of East West tension and reconciliation.

Programme Note: 

 “Using fast material from the concerto it is partly inspired by Handel’s 9th English song HWV 228 “From Scourging Rebellion” written in honour of the Duke of Cumberland, in particular the verse:

How hateful’s the tyrant, who lured by false fame.

To satiate his prade sets the world in a flame!

How glorious the King, whose beneficent mind

Makes true grandeur consist in protecting mankind!

When looking at what the mess that we in the west have historically made to the social cohesion of the Middle East, it seemed particularly apt.”

Blood was commissioned by the British Council for the National Youth Orchestra of Iraq with funding from Creative Scotland.
