Stammt das Virus aus der Natur oder aus dem Labor? Und: Macht das für einen Unterschied?
Wenn das SarS-Cov-2-Virus menschengemacht ist und der sogenannten Gain-of-function-Forschung entspringt, gibt es Verantwortliche. Dann sind vor allem wir als Gesellschaft gefordert, diese weltweite Katastrophe aufzuklären und aufzuarbeiten. Für jeden einzelnen Menschen würde diese Tatsache ein inneres Erdbeben verursachen, denn es ist ein gewaltiger Unterschied, ob ich mit den Unbilden der Natur umzugehen habe und in meiner Gemeinschaft einen Weg dafür suche, oder ob es zu benennende Verursacher dieses Unheils gibt.

Der Hamburger Nanowissenschaftler Professor Roland Wiesendanger beschäftigt sich seit Anfang 2020 mit dieser Frage und ist früh mit renommierten Wissenschaftlern weltweit dem möglichen Labor-Ursprung des Sars-Cov-2-Virus nachgegangen. Unsere Kollegin Eva Schmidt hat sich mit ihm unterhalten. 

Roland Wiesendanger lehrt experimentelle Festkörperphysik an der Universität Hamburg und wurde zur Gründung des Zentrums für Mikrostrukturforschung dort hin berufen. Seither arbeitet Wiesendanger an verschiedenen Forschungsthemen und Projekten auf dem Gebiet der Nanowissenschaft und Nanotechnologie. Er ist Mitglied der Nationalen Akademie der Wissenschaften Leopoldina. Im Jahr 2012 erhielt er die Ehrenprofessur des Harbin Institute of Technology in China und 2015 die Ehrendoktorwürde der Technischen Universität Posen. Er ist Autor bzw. Koautor von über 600 wissenschaftlichen Originalveröffentlichungen sowie von zahlreichen Büchern und Buchartikeln.
