Disquiet Junto Project 0475: Low End (4 of 3)

An ambient snippet. G Major, 49 BPM. Envisioned as one of a trio - perhaps three loops playing off each other.

A small selection of an attempt at a Basinski-style "Disintegration Loop" on the Digitakt. Sampled myself playing a small section of Holst's "Jupiter", and then chopped that into phrases on the Digitakt. I changed the probability that each phrase would trigger as I went further into the piece, and changed various effect parameters as well.

Probably the simplest piece of music I've made. 3 tracks of the same static noise, offset slightly in pitch to create a phasing effect. Resonant filters fade in and out over time to create a chord with shifting emphasis.

Disquiet Junto Project 0529: Squared Off

Make the thing you think is the minimum viable music.

I considered what "Minimum viable music" means to me.

For me, musicality has always linked directly to musicianship. A great practitioner of their instrument has great musicianship, and great musicianship opens the path to great musicality. Musicality then breeds music.

So in a quest to go minimal, I took the road of a single C2 note from a Juno synth (TAL Uno LX) -a square wave oscillator, everything open. Nothing easier than hitting a note! 
Then I sent the audio from that single note, looped at 134 BPM, into a load of effect tracks, comprising reverbs, delays, pitch shifters, overdrive distortions, and digital degradation effects units.

I wanted to expose my love for effect units. Nothing but a C2 on a Juno was used here. Musicianship is minimised fully - musicality comes from performance of 'effects', not of 'instruments'. Set up and play the effect units in a digital DAW. Minimum Viable Musicianship....

Tal Uno LX, Wave H-Reverb, Eventide Little Plate, Surreal Machines Diffuse and Modnetic, Eventide Little Alter Boy, Eventide Effect Rack x3, Tritik Moodal x2, Replika XT x3, Glitchmachines Fracture XT x2, Sonic Charge Permut8. A shade of feedback here and there!

Santōka’s poetry emphasizes the necessity of sabi (solitude) in order to achieve spiritual enlightenment and serenity.

Yes, there was an emphasis on step 2, but after some tracks from the disquiet0525 playlist I already felt ready to go.

and started to glue some things together in Reaper. Originally I wanted to have Daniels part as a never changing loop, but the finale of his upright bass is just too cool and I tried to bend Morgulbees drone to fit which maybe not have succeeded in every bar but I liked the crooked strangeness. Seraminds part is noise and blips. I added some Vocoder, because I felt like making some noises over the rhythm, and this part, too, has good and bad moments. Most of the time already went into getting the Arturia Vocoder plugin to work the way I wanted it… (solution: multiple tracks, sidechaining, routing – I never had used this before).

Disquiet Junto Project 0538: Guided Decompression
The Assignment: Get someone from tense to chill.

Step 1: Your goal with this piece is to guide someone from a place of intense stress to something more sedate. Keep that in mind.

Step 2: A lot of meditation-oriented music takes the end point as the start. Consider that it can be jarring to listen to calm music when you are anything but calm.

Step 3: Compose a piece of music that starts in a state of accelerated tension, allows the listener to align their own tension with that of the music, and then slowly proceeds to calm down, until the music is sustainably peaceful.

I basically had 4 tracks with different effects that I switched between kind of haphazardly. one with delay, one pitch shifted down 6 half steps, one with LFO and resonator, and the original track which I was going to leave alone but then I decided to make it sound like a clock radio with saturation and EQ.

Low End (4 of 3) - disquiet0475

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.
