Disquiet Junto Project 0520: On the Clock

For @disquiet junto project 520, 17th Dec 2021: On The Clock, Stop procrastinating ...

This is a nice "end of the year" project. I spent 2 hours this Friday morning working on this 18 years old track.
It started as a slow jam with my friend  Ringo Estrella playing drums, I was playing upright bass.
It was a pointless jam, but I liked the groove, so I kept it aside for further use.
5 years later  I went back to it and added acoustic guitar to make something out of it (mimicking a bass lick to create a sort of hook) It was still pointless so I shelved again.
3 years later I need a slow groove for a project, considered this one and added a Hammond organ to glue it together. Still didn't work but kept it aside promising to finish that later.
Fats forward 5 years and I fulfilled my promise , went back to it, recorded some melodies on my accordina...and then did nothing with it, didn't mix it, nothing.
This morning, another 5 years later, inspired by this project I decided to just mix it and share it, as pointless as it is, just to get rid of it...

Process notes -
This was recorded using Xynthesizr by Phonolynth, Eventide Ultratap, and Supergroup Audiosave within Audiobus 3 on an iPad Mini 4.

Xynthesizr allows the use of randomization and custom scales - my scale here consisted of only the first five notes of a major scale - do-re-mi-fa-sol.

Apologetically Horny (disquiet0537)

This recording follows the inspiration of the Disquiet Junto Project 0537 (see below): How could a apologetic car horn sound like ?
The track presents a quiet side street, its atmosphere augmented by different musical elements. Some cars apologize for driving by and disrupting the calm by sounding their apologetic melody, and in the end this horn melody leads a life of its own.

Dark & Light (disquiet0538)

Back in the Paleolithic Era, Suss Müsik had a day job in a print shop. It was stressful, physically demanding work; the craft of mechanical reproduction requires meticulous attention to detail and firm adherence to bulk scheduling. It was not uncommon for tensions to erupt during the course of a working day: yelling, crying, illness, threats, even the occasional fistfight.

Still, there was also something comforting about the work’s repetitive nature: an almost soothing glow that takes over the mind and body, not unlike the euphoria experienced during vigorous exercise. One felt a sense of camaraderie, of being an essential component of a successful process. We were merely cogs in a machine, yes, but it was our machine and together we cultivated an ability to convert stress into sedation.

Walter Benjamin (author of the seminal essay The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction) once wrote: “The relationship between life and purposefulness reveals itself, seemingly obvious yet almost beyond the grasp of the intellect, only if the ultimate purpose toward which all single functions tend is sought not in its own sphere but in a higher one.” This piece attempts to explore this process of manifestation.

A sonic facsimile of mechanical process was “played” using a simple melody. The same melody was then replicated using a “breathy” glass harmonium voice, amplified into a rhythmic synth pattern. The effect is calming by nature, its native rigor gently evolving while not disrupting the pattern. The glitched voiceover is a recording of a factory worker, describing how he had been given a warning after arriving at work three minutes late during a snowstorm.

The piece is entitled Jeckel, named in honor of a former coworker who sadly passed away in 2013. This effort is dedicated to the the laughs, frustrations and wisdom we shared during our time together.

Jeckel [Disquiet0538]

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.
