The creature was ugly, the animals said,
Some even wondered if he ought to be dead;
No-one would love him looking that way;
They should leave him to starve, and they all walked away.

But his parents ignored them, they loved him the same 
As all of their children, he wasn’t to blame!
Their home was his refuge, a place he could speak,
And there he discovered what made him unique:

He started to sing, rather shaky at first,
Then louder and louder till his lungs nearly burst,
Till the animals heard and they came round to see,
Then they laughed and they laughed when they saw it was he.

“Does he think he’s got talent?” the animals mocked.
“Let him sing in the shower, and keep the door locked.”
“He sounds just appalling! Completely off key!”
So he lay on his bed, with tears in each eye.

But the song wasn’t happy to remain in a drawer,
And he couldn’t stop singing, just as loud as before;
Then some beautiful souls passed the house, and they heard,
So they knocked on the door and asked him for a word.

They smiled as they asked him, “Would you sing in our show?”
But he thought they were joking and he told them to go.
At length they convinced him to give it a try;
And the next thing he knew he was singing up high.

When the animals heard of his role in the play,
They sat in the audience and watched with dismay;
He was clearly much better than he’d been before,
But they wouldn’t say sorry and they laughed all the more.

At first he was sad, till his new friends declared,
“They have no voice to sing and they’re just running scared,”
So he turned to the crowd and delivered his part,
And the rapturous applause touched him deep in his heart.

He continues to sing and perform to this day.
When the animals scoff, they don’t get in his way;
Though he sometimes feels low, like it isn’t worthwhile,
He recalls the applause and he sings with a smile.
