Coldcut - 70 minutes of madness

2013 marked the 25th Anniversary of Solid Steel when Matt Black and Jon More from Coldcut started broadcasting together on pirate Kiss FM in 1988. It's been a year long celebration and we'd like to thank all the guests who have contributed incredible mixes throughout the year. To see off the year, we asked our listeners to vote for their favourite guest mix from the last 25 years and also their favourite mixes from our resident DJ's.

Your favourite Coldcut mix was the 'Journeys by DJ Special' from 20th May 2002. The original '70 minutes of Madness' was released in 1995 and often considered "the best DJ mix album of all time" and this mix coincided with it's reissue in 2002. It features extra tracks that didn't appear on the original CD including the Coldcut rework of 'People hold on'

Unsurprisingly, the most popular mix for DJ Cheeba, DJ Moneyshot and DJ Food was their epic version of the Beastie Boys‘ ‘Paul’s Boutique’ album from 31st August 2012 made entirely from the original sample sources titled ‘Caught In The Middle Of A 3-Way Mix’ . Each of them took a third of the album to work on and combined their efforts into a mix that will make you hear it in a new way. Aside from the original sample sources they’ve included commentary from the Beasties, vintage interviews, demo versions and much more.

Finally it was the Hexstatic mix from 28th January 2011 which was your favourite, with the classic Royksopp remix of KOC, leading into the lovely electronica Two Dots by Lusine. SBTRKT's remix of Modeselektors 'Art&Cash' leads perfectly into material from Robin Hexstatic's project, plus music from  Magnetic Man, Andreya Triana and Dave Angel.

Congratulations to Daniel Westlake from Tunbridge Wells in Kent, who was the winner picked at random in the competition and will receive prizes from Novation, AIAIA, Serato and Solid Steel.

***This came out before web reviews, however, IMHO, it's one of the most badass and technically accomplished mixes of its time.

The pic is an actual scan, the Cream logo is embossed and the light gold and gray print doesn't show up very well, but it's Cream for  sure... :-)

DJ Moneyshot is up next holding class again. His latest mix, 'Heavenly Sunday Social at The Albany', is a tribute to the Chemical Brothers' legendary DJ residency at The Albany pub in London. Back in 1994 they were known as the Dust Brothers, and spun an emotional mix of rare Soul, classic Hip-Hop, Acid House and Psych Rock. Not to mention test pressings of their latest Dance/Indie crossover remixes, and fledgling original productions. Moneyshot has scoured discogs, sample-spotted, and dug-up magazines from back-in-the-day to get the inside scoop on the magic of this pre-Big Beat melting pot. This was recorded live at my monthly 'Keep It Unreal' residency in Manchester, plying mostly vinyl with a couple of cds thrown in there too. The venue at the time was the Music Box, a sweaty, dark basement, which is now a Tesco. Listening back, I can feel the atmosphere, the heat, and a room full of lovely people enjoying the music. Now that same room is full of stock assistants & chilled celery. Oh well! We have since moved the night to Band on the Wall, and will be celebrating the 15th year of Keep it Unreal in June 2014.
