Scottish duo Slam, Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle, are a tour de force on the global techno circuit. Their unique, six deck, back-to-back DJ performances have seen the duo play leading clubs and festivals across the world. They are renowned for both their experience and their powerful, contemporary sound. Listen to Soma Records' head honchos signature high energy and peak-time mix for this week's Global Vibe Radio. 

The last few years have seen some of Slam's most prolific studio output as they continue to innovate and keep things moving forward, most recently with the Louder Than Chaos project. Louder Than Chaos was a series of five releases on 12" vinyl and digital. Each volume released monthly via Soma Records, and available here: https://somarecords.com/shop/music/

The project kicked off with Vol. 1 featuring collaborations with 999999999, Hector Oaks and Keith Tucker (AKA Optic Nerve). Vol. 2 features collaborations with UK techno legend Perc, and Vol. 3 features long term Soma affiliate Rebekah. Vol. 4 with Belgium’s finest export Amelie Lens. Vol. 5 concluded Lounder Than Chaos, featuring the enigmatic Mancunian AnD. Each EP features specially commissioned artwork from German based artist PPP Panic, which consolidates into one constructive piece over the five releases.  

Besides heading Soma Records and spearheading projects, McMillan and Meikle are co-directors and co-curators of Glasgow's Riverside Festival. The festival showcases the best emerging local talent alongside some of the most established names in international techno. Scotland's premier electronic music festival returns on the Jubilee Bank Holiday Weekend, June 2 to June 4. The party will take place at the iconic Zaha Hadid-designed Riverside Museum on Glasgow’s Clydeside. This summer the legendary Slam Tent in Edinburgh also returns after a six year hiatus as Slam Events and Edinburgh promoters FLY join forces. “Techno is a genre known for its dark and powerful sound, but even in a sphere dedicated to no-holds-barred production, Dax J’s tracks stand out as particularly robust and intense.

Take ‘The Wonk’, from his most recent EP ‘The Invisible Man’, which lays down a tough low-end that ploughs forward with relentless energy. A frantic outer texture sounds like an accordion made out of titanium alloy, quivering in-and-out to disorientating effect. It’s a face-melting cut that that bends the mind of any dancefloor that hears it. Last month he took dancers in Berghain through to Monday afternoon with a 10-hour closing set which was undoubtedly transcendental.

The producer is based in Europe’s techno capital Berlin nowadays, but travelling back to his teen years spent listening to d’n’b and jungle while growing up in London provides insight into his vigorous approach to production.

Dax took up DJing aged 15 as a hobby that soon turned into an obsession. He would gather with friends on school playgrounds to listen to Kool FM radio recordings on their walkmens, until he could no longer confine his passion to break times and would skip lessons to shop for vinyl at Black Market Records in Soho.

Looking for an outlet to publicly air the wax he was buying by the shedload, he came into contact with one of the founders of the Time FM pirate radio station and pestered him with phone calls for a month until he was offered a show. It was hardly a prime slot – the 6-8am Saturday graveyard shift – but he accepted with enthusiasm and set his alarm early every weekend for months to broadcast his sets.

His next pirate stint was on Origin FM, which he held down for four years and in that time began to release music under the name Dangerous, with records arriving through outlets such as Mickey Finns’ Urban Takeover label and his own Xplicit Sound. But while studying Music Technology at university he began to fall out of love with the d’n’b scene, finding the move towards jump-up sounds to be at odds with the rawness and darkness of the music he fell in love with.

Musically disillusioned after graduating, he decided to spend the summer in Ibiza and it was there that he was introduced to techno. Dax was blown away by the spectacle of the clubs and the new music he was hearing, describing his response to Stray Landings as “this music is like drum 'n' bass but slower, I love it!” He returned to producing invigorated with a new direction to follow, yet he didn’t completely forego his roots and regularly works old breaks and the classic amen sound into his techno exploits, making for some of the most high-octane records going.

Dax J’s contribution to the genre since has been massive, co-founding the EarToGround label and going solo with his Monnom Black imprint, curating and contributing to a stacked release schedule that never falters in quality. His work ethic is so strong that he even sets up a micro studio on planes on the way to gigs.

2015 saw the release of debut full-length ‘Shade Of Black’ which was awarded Album of the Month in Mixmag and showcased an artist with an assured vision and uncompromising attitude. It’s a mindset that he carries over to his DJ sets that are characterised by rigid rhythms and forays into pulsating acid. Check out his slamming In Session mix below for a prime example.”

Kobosil is one of the new wave of artists to have emerged under the wing of Berghain. As well as being a resident at the club, the Berlin DJ and producer has also released on its in house labels Ostgut Ton and Unterton, as well as on fellow resident Marcel Dettmann’s own eponymous imprint. His dark, heavy sound also gave rise to a debut full length earlier this year, and with its clear focus on big linear drums and shadowy atmospheres, it proved he is here to stay. Now, the boss of his own RK label steps up to our series with a similarly impressive mix. 

Starting out in frazzled and dystopian fashion, the mix wastes little time in setting a high impact, high tempo techno agenda. Overdriven percussion and lurching synths, wild machine sounds and thumping drums are all hurried and forceful and encourage you to lean right into the grooves, head down, stomping away. It is a powerful and maximal one hour selection that cannot fail to get your attention.

Remco Beekwilder has been releasing EP’s steadily on imprints such as Monnom Black, self reflektion and Binary Cells over these past three years, while also playing gigs all around Europe. His monumental LSD EP got released on Dax J's Monnom Black label and shows his diversity and capability as a producer, with four tracks that reflect his artistry perfectly. The long awaited LSD track reached No.34 into the DJ Mag top 50 tracks of 2017.
Next to producing Beekwilder has been playing at some of the biggest clubs and events like Awakenings, Reaktor, Rotterdamse Rave, Soenda, Kompass Club and Tresor.

Inhalt Der Nacht is a Berlin based producer, defined by a singular sound imprint inspired by cold wave and new wave beats. Through his productions, Inhalt Der Nacht, give us his own interpretation of EBM-fused Techno. He has already been noticed by well known artists as Dax J and created his own label called "Lebending". He also enjoys a residency at the famous Berlin club Griessmuehle.
