Backing track for the "Tampaphobia" float in the 2002 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, featuring the re-arranged voice of then-Prime Minister John Howard, ship horns, sirens, drums and the theme from "The Love Boat".  The float was protesting against the Australian government's demonisation of refugees, as exemplified in an incident the year before when they attempted to stop a boat carrying refugees  - the "Tampa"  - reaching Australian shores.

Tampaphobia  - John Howard's Love Boat (2002)

Voice edit of Australian anti-gay campaigner and state parliamentarian Fred Nile, made in 1988. A technological transition piece, where some of it was made using magnetic tape, hand-cut with razor blades and sticky tape, and the rest made with my first digital sampler. Some 'secret' late-night broadcasts on 2JJJ and 2SER; then was featured in the response to Fred Nile's anti-gay march on Oxford St in 1989 : It was broadcast through a PA system from the Syd's Warehouse, while some people carried it around on Oxford St playing it through cassette boom boxes. The final plan had been to try and get it through Fred's PA system at Taylor Square while he was speaking on the stage, but mixing desk security was too tight. Was also used in 1989 theatre performance of "Boys Toys & Freud" that I performed in at the Syd's Warehouse and the CUB Malthouse in Melbourne; and in the dance piece "Scary Kiss" by Mathew Bergan and Chad Courtney the same year. 

Fred Nile cutup (1988)

Never released. Originally made for a live performance at the Metro Theatre in August 1997, and given to radio station 2JJJ to promote the party. Became Triple J #1 request song for 9 days until Pauline Hanson obtained a 'temporary' injunction in the Supreme Court taking it off air. The judge confided to another judge's wife at a conference soon afterwards that he "had been in a hurry that day". Voted #5 in Triple J Hottest 100 that year. ABC's appeal against the injunction 13 months later was not successful, judges accepting Hanson's belated Statement of Claim that the song imputed that the plaintiff (Hanson) was "proud to engage in anal sex with members of the Klu Klux Klan"; amongst other claims.  Current legal status is that the ABC are not allowed to play it on air, but the song is not "banned". I'm a Back Door Man (1997)

The 1998 CD single of "I Don't Like It"  also contained the "Xenophobia" remix, which had been my first ever attempt at creating something for the dancefloor. In 2011 I made a cut-down version for a performance at Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. This is a further edit of that remix, used as a backing track for a performance on "The Morning Show", Channel 7, in May 2012.

'I Don't Like It'  - Xenophobia remix, shorter edit (1998/2012)

This is a medley of my two hits performed in an RSL in the year 2018, backed by a small jazz combo in front of an audience of 5 bored people, who politely clap at each song transition while they play the pokies. 

Actually, it was made in 2002 for a performance at an art auction I hosted to raise money for refugee cases at NSW Parliament House. The event was organised by JAFA (Just and Fair Asylum). 

Pauline Hanson's offsider David Oldfield (then a NSW One Nation parliamentarian) freaked out when he saw me, and ran away to hide in the toilets, where he was abused by someone else :

'Hits of the 90s' tragic RSL Medley (2018)

Here's the story behind this unfinished alternate version. 'Back Door Man' was an immediate sensation on 2JJJ, being voted #1 on listener requests every day for the ten days it was on air, before Pauline Hanson had it slapped down with a Supreme Court injunction. 
During those ten days, I was approached by several major record labels about the possibility of releasing the song. As the music was made almost entirely of samples of other people's music, they needed me to replace it with my own in order to ensure a fast release. 

I went back to the studio and worked on different sections of the song for a few days, using synthesisers, guitar, bass, beats and sound FX - but abandoned it when the Supreme Court ruling arrived. This is why this version sounds disjointed - I was at the stage of trying different styles for different sections. 15 years later, I feel happy with the synth arrangements, and rather than finish it, just want to throw it out as it was. 

As the success and notoriety of 'Back Door Man' had been unexpected, I then planned a year ahead to do a second Hanson song at the time of the next federal election, and to work with lawyers beforehand to ensure the song could not be banned. This resulted in "I Don't Like It" and my run for the NSW Senate in the 1998 federal election.
