Here's the speech I wrote for my brother, John Chung:

Hello everyone,

My name is Bernard Chung and I am Major John Chung's brother.
It has been a pleasure to meet you all. It's unfortunate that we had to meet under these circumstances, but it's for a great reason, to remember and honor John.

As a child, John was a very energetic, intellectual, kind boy. We would go to NY and NJ to visit our relatives for summer vacation, Thanksgiving and Christmas. He would love those trips. My father, mother and even John, when he was old enough, drove us to their house. We would bring Maryland crabs and our relatives would cook turkey dinners with all the side dishes, with Korean food like Bulgogi and Kimchi. He enjoyed video games, reading novels, in line skating, cross country, track and field, music, dancing, history and politics. As kids, we would play games like Street Fighter II and Wing Commander. One of his dreams as a boy was to be an Air Force pilot. Almost everything he tried, he was successful at. He also was an excellent violin and trombone player. He was a modern Renaissance man. At times, my parents compared me to him, but I knew I couldn't live up to the man he was.

However, John wasn't always the most suave and stylish guy when he was younger, but through his years of work and traveling, he became more fashionable and handsome, with the help of me. He came back to visit Balitmore in 2000 for Christmas before my mother, father and I moved to Hawaii. Patter I left I realized some of my favorite CDs and movies were missing. I later found out he borrowed them when I went to visit him in Germany.

He always has a way of connecting people together in a positive and constructive way, even right now, he is uniting people together as I speak at his funeral. I wasn't always the best brother and sometimes we fought and disagreed, but he found it in his heart to introduce me to some of the important people in his life. When I was in middle school and he was in high school, he invited me to his friend's house to meet his best friend, Nick Saglimbeni. Our family became close friends with his friends and their family, Ms. Toni Saglimbeni, her other son Alex, Alex Wong, Mort Rizvi and Kevin Saverese. I learned many things from my brother and them. When I visited him in Heidelberg, Gerany, he introduced me to so many intriguing and kind people that he knew. This is the kind of man John is. He always finds a way to make people happy and broaden their perspective. He even taught me lessons as a child that I remember to this day. When I was a dumb kid, I showed him my middle school year book and he asked why there bad names next to other students names. I said my other friends and I made fun of those students. He told me you shouldn't judge people by what they look like, but love them for who they are. As a John's physical self may have changed forms, but his spiritual self is still alive and strong.

My only regret is I wish I could have talked with him more. At times, he seemed distant after being accepted to West Point and being stationed overseas. He didn't talk much about his work in the military and was very modest of his accolades and accomplishments. But after seeing him at my cousins wedding in 2009 and in Korea, it reminded me of the good times. He even had time to see my parents this past Thanksgiving. I wish I could have been with all of them, but I was in Seoul, South Korea at the time. My parents and I wish we could of helped him more. We reached out so many times but sometimes he was so busy with his life and career. At least I know he was doing great things and shared time with kind people just like himself.

We are all dealing with his death in our own way. Sometimes I think he's going to pop up and say "Got yah!" with his smile that was so genuine and sincere in a world that can be dark and cold . I wish he was here right now to see this. Looking around at all the people here, I can only hope my funeral is going to be this amazing. I know all we can do is move on, but we will never forget him and we will live life as he would want us. Knowing that he made such an positive impact on the world lets me know that he lived life to the fullest and gave the most that he could to this world. Our family wished he had a wife or children to carry on his legacy. However, he has his father, mother, brother, his friends, co workers and the U.S. military to carry on his spirit. John's physical self may have changed forms, but his spiritual self is still alive and strong.

Some say that the good die young. But the lessons, memories and experiences they had, live on through the people they helped and the people who helped those good people. We will never forget his essence and he will live on through all the people in the world he met.

I know this might not be proper funeral etiquette, but I believe my brother deserves it. On the count of 3, I would like everyone to say as loud as they can, "We love you John!" 1,2,3

You will always live in my heart and mind, John.
