Paul Kalkbrenner doesn’t often do remixes, just three since 2018 in fact. 2021 has now delivered two of them, a rarity for a calendar year, and Paul’s second, following his remix of NTO’s Invisible, is a special one, as he remixes Techno Monkey, the famed 2016 release of his wife, Simina Grigoriu.

This is the first time Paul has collaborated publically with his wife, and it kicks off a three volume series of remixes of Simina’s Techno Monkey that will roll out in 2021 on her Kuukou Records label. 

Kalkbrenner’s remix embodies the grand techno sound that he has made his own over the last twenty plus years, its seven melodic, emotive and propulsive minutes, offering a unique reinterpretation of Techno Monkey, that keeps the track sounding as fresh today as it did on its release. 

Simina Grigoriu – Techno Monkey Remixed Vol. 1 will be released on July 9 via Kuukou Records.

Klaus Jankuhn, is a German record producer and musician, considered a pioneer in the early German techno scene. He mostly worked for the artists of the rave label Low Spirit, producing artists such as WestBam, Marusha or DJ Dick. Together with WestBam he also founded the project Members of Mayday.

Beginning as an Electronic Rock group not dissimilar to Zodiac Mindwarp And The Love Reaction DFA were critically acclaimed by music press and fans alike, however after three years the band had burnt itself out, this prompted Steve Dixon to take a trip around the world where he was exposed to Acid and House music.

Circa 1992 he and Brian Dixon begin making music again, though without vocals and guitars; the resulting mix of Acid, Dance and Techno was soon picked up by Peaceville's Hammy and he signed the band to his Dreamtime label. 

At this point original DFA guitarist Paul rejoined, and vocalist Hayley Windsor was recruited. In 1997 the band recorded their last album for Dreamtime; Om - 23.

Brian Moss and Hayley Windsor currently perform with Mirazma, Steve Dixon passed away in 2007.

Orlando Voorn is a Dutch DJ and electronic music producer. As a solo artist he has released work since the early 80s under a large amount of aliases containing Balance, Frequency, Baruka, Basic Bastard, Fix, Dope Dog, Boy, Stalker and The Nighttripper. He also produced tracks with Blake Baxter under the name Ghetto Brothers and with Jeff Porter as Designer Loops.

Voorn won the Dutch DMC DJ Championships in 1986 which meant the beginning of a large number of released tracks. As a professional DJ he released his first club tracks under the record label Lower East Side Records. Together with Detroit techno music pioneers Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Blake Baxter he produced tracks under various labels. 

Voorn's music is characterised by its variety of styles such as Techno, Drum n bass, Ambient, Hip hop and Electro. By many people Orlando Voorn is considered the first one to establish a connection (in music) between Detroit and Amsterdam.

Don’t be fooled by the ominous title, it’s a family affair this one! Simina Grigoriu teams up with sibling Moe Danger and life partner Paul Kalkbrenner on the Shark Island EP, with K-Paul on remix duties and a special appearance by the label’s youngest member, Paul & Simina’s daughter.

The title track sets the tone with throaty vocal chops that add mystery to its clacking percussion and devilish synth lead. The effect is an intense build up, with the tension gradually released in the second half, by the way of dreamy synth arpeggios that lighten up the overall mood.
Kalkbrenner applies a staccato feel that tilts towards a more bouncy version of the original. Giving the track new life through a novel melody, it evolves into a deeply affecting piece, as its pulsating rhythm keeps the energy at a constant high.
You might know K-Paul as the electrifying half of the 90’s dance duo Lexy & K-Paul, a trait that applies to his production style, as well as in his remixing effort for Shark Island. With a more enigmatic, hyper-gradual release technique, this particular remix unveils jarring electro synths with brooding countermelodies.
