Sayáo sa Ilaoán, a castilianized orthography of “sayaw” (dance) and “ilawan” (light/lamp/lantern/candlelight) tips its hat to Spanish-influenced folk dances of the Philippines (ex. Jota, Malagueña, Habanera, Pandanggo, etc.).  Though not a literal depiction of these dance forms, Sayáo sa Ilaoán is the composer’s personal reinterpretation of them.

Seasons (Live)

Over two decades ago, when I was just learning to play the piano, I had one unwavering, ceaselessly supportive fan: my mother.

Inay loved to sing, and I loved to accompany her, and night after night we would go through song after song. I wasn't a very good pianist; in fact I was pretty lousy. Still, she sat by me patiently, waiting for me to figure out what came next each time I stumbled mid-score. She didn't care if my intros were elementary, my chords were dumbed-down, and my rhythms were a mess. 

Over the months, my confidence improved, my playing got better, and our repertoire expanded and our jamming went much smoother. But soon, as I got busy with college and career -- and later, moved out of the house -- we stopped having those jamming sessions. We would tell each other we would do it again, but for different reasons each time, we found excuses not to do it. 

But when I flew home for the holidays last December, I took advantage of the recording gear I had bought for school and which I had brought home, to record a song from our repertoire and upload it in time for Inay's 66th birthday. Not only was it a sentimental thing; it's also been on Inay's bucket list to have a recording of her singing.

So, the day before I left Manila to return to Boston, we recorded Inay's favorite song, Bacharach & David's "Alfie" -- a song we ran through countless times two decades ago, sometimes thrice in one night, but which we never got tired of. 

Two decades later, the love with which Inay sings the song, and the love with which I accompany Inay, hasn't changed. The only difference this time is, as Tatay told Inay while he watched us record, "Your accompanist is now a pro."

To all our friends, hope you like it. : ) 

And to Inay, Happy birthday. Here's to my first ever and still number one vocalist. : )
