אמרו לו תלמידיו: רבינו, עד כאן?!
His students said to him: “Our teacher, even now [you remain so devoted]?!”
אמר להם: כל ימי הייתי מצטער על פסוק זה — "בכל נפשך" — אפילו נוטל את נשמתך.
He said to them: “All my life I was troubled by this verse — ‘with all your soul’ — [meaning] even if He takes your soul.
אמרתי: מתי יבא לידי ואקיימנו?
I said: When will the opportunity come to me to fulfill it?
ועכשיו שבא לידי — לא אקיימנו?!
And now that it has come to me — shall I not fulfill it?!”
היה מאריך באחד עד שיצתה נשמתו באחד.
He prolonged [the word] “Echad” (One) until his soul departed with the word “Echad.”
יצתה בת קול ואמרה: אשריך, ר' עקיבא, שיצאה נשמתך באחד.
A heavenly voice went out and said: “Fortunate are you, Rabbi Akiva, that your soul left you with ‘Echad.’”

אמרו מלאכי השרת לפני הקב"ה: זו תורה וזו שכרה?!
The ministering angels said before the Holy One, Blessed is He: “This is Torah and this is its reward?!”
"ממתים ידך ה' ממתים..." (תהלים יז, יד)
“‘From those who die by Your hand, O Lord, from those who die...’” (Psalms 17:14)
אמר להם: חלקם בחיים.
[God] said to them: “[Their] portion is in [eternal] life.”
יצתה בת קול ואמרה: אשריך, ר' עקיבא, שאתה מזומן לחיי העולם הבא.
A heavenly voice went out and said: “Fortunate are you, Rabbi Akiva, for you are destined for the World to Come.”
