This is Duck Trash’s set from Tomorrow’s Fires, a party celebrating the release of Erika’s “Anevite Void” album on February 25, 2023. Mix theme: After getting abducted by aliens, one must learn how to adapt & grow plants on an unfamiliar planet in outer space.

It’s hard to overstate the transformative power of the American Underground. Things get lost when it’s just a systematic big business, all these special things that make the core essence so powerful and palpable. IT first encountered @ducktrash when BMG played for them in Indianapolis last September with Noncompliant at this exquisite dive bar called State Street Club with the most open minded crowd. It wasn’t what it looked like, it really transcended time and space. “Duck Trash is a queer techno & electro selector who believes in the healing power of the dance floor.” We couldn’t agree more, and we’re so glad they got to do their Detroit debut at Erika’s album release party. They are part of the fabric that makes the midwest so amazing, the true underground freaks.

Vancouver's @djhockey brings a sense of playfulness, groove, and emotion to a realm of psychedelic, twisted techno that can often take itself too seriously. He regularly appears at Vancouver venues like Dolly and recently played at the inaugural Osmosis in the Trees festival in Oregon. In addition to DJing, he co-runs record label and mix series @pprzrecords alongside Adam 2, uplifting emerging artists from across the underground and most recently releasing his own latest EP, Celestial Pursuit.

"This mix combined parts of various gigs I was working on that fell through. The gigs had quite differing musical lineups and set times, which I combined with some tracks that had been sitting in my wishlist on Bandcamp but never seen a fit for a particular project as of yet. It quickly turned into my favourite mix I’ve created thus far, as I feel it closely represents my favourite aspects of dance music all in one.

I have been working on trying to incorporate a wider range of my style into my podcasts so that each one doesn’t get tunnel vision, while still telling a slow burning story. I’ve also been pushing myself to make each individual blend something unique. Lots of tracks work well together, but is it something special and new? These are questions I have been asking myself more lately. I like the playfulness of this mix, but it also has moments where you may question what emotion you’re feeling."

Justin Aulis Long is a sonic sorcerer, urban Homeric poet, and cosmic wanderer that exists within the liminal spaces where light meets dark. Long is the offspring of a gorgon, conceived within a brick and mortar labyrinth while surrounded by the supernatural electronic voices of angelic forces.

While engaging in themes of the uncanny and erotic, Long opens thresholds which lead to psychedelic realms during communal dance gatherings. Applications of sonic alchemy during ritual action generate vibrant forces created through collective effervescence, causing a bubbling over of ecstatic energy leading to rapture. During the rite, incantations are expressed through fusing a swarm of aural fragments composed from diverse temperaments by way of a personal and singular technique.Sacred objects (records), selector’s tools (turntables and mixer), body, spirit, harmonic and discordant voices unify and become one - The Soft Machine.

During a ritual performance, phonic collages are created intuitively on sight, sigils are aurally direct with specific intent, and offerings are bestowed before an alter, all charged by an engine of chaos. Time and space unravels while normality ruptures and disintegrates as foundational structures of the status quo are dismantled through intensive executions, founded in the practices surrounding musical selection.

Very excited to welcome back DJ Hockey (OFR163 - see link below) for our 200th edition of Only For Robots. 

DJ Hockey approaches techno by intermingling layers of contrasting elements. Defining characteristics for his selections are grounded, thick, encompassing atmospheres often on the introspective side. Psychedelia is present in all of his musical expressions, crafting dynamic journeys resulting in playful and groovy sets.

About the mix:
I had the pleasure of playing a condensed version of this mix to a intimate crowd at a rave on a small family farm / inside an empty barn. The barn had beautiful visuals projected on it courtesy of Mollie Bryan (@mokedo) on Instagram, who also organized the event.

This mix is encapsulates every quality I admire in techno, and feels like one of my most authentic expressions yet.

She is known to have a versatile style and love for funky robotic rhythms. She recently joined forces with other local DJs to run Juicy Fruit - a monthly queer dance party on Miami Beach. Regardless of time or space, FABiOLA invokes a Midwest flair to every set.

For episode 47 of the podcast series, we have @sassmouth in for a stellar mix of predominantly electro with some acid, breakbeat, and a touch of UKG. Sassmouth is a DJ based in her longtime adopted home, Chicago. She playfully mixes all kinds of records with a focus on techno, house, acid and electro sounds. She created her label @god-particle-vinyl as a homage to this style of DJing- a place for friends to showcase music that connects the dots between all these styles of dance music. She is a rave mom and real mom and co-runs Walking and Falling- a mentor program for woman and non-binary music enthusiasts that want to learn to DJ. If you don’t see her in the booth she is very likely dancing her ass off by the front left speaker.

artist statement:

In February 2023 I focused on developing a new live set for my debut with @thebunkerny for an album release, named one of the best releases of 2023 by @mixmag-1. I trained the set with performances at Bossa Nova Civic Club with Perfect Party Look Book and at Forest City Lodge with Microtones in Ithaca.

Maybe describing this can help you process some live set ideas.

My previous approach to delivering this material live (originally at The Long Count Cycle, then at Technically Yeah) was using stems as a bedrock and improvisation on top. Even though this worked fine, it got a bit stale for me and I wanted to be as satisfied as a listener when a groove sets in. So I decided to go fully based on MIDI information and instruments, with an added challenge that my CPU can’t take too much of a load, so I needed to make sure I disabled certain instruments before bringing others in. A disclaimer is that I am not fully endorsing all of the equipment in this list, there are some caveats that I’m happy to discuss.

In Ableton I created custom instruments through stock plugins like operator, collision, wavetable - these instruments are divided into ones I cycle through and ones that are constant throughout the set.

The constant ones exist in instrument racks and are freely interchangeable through chains - all of the parameters are mapped to the same knobs on my Novation Launch Control XL enabling me to wash through several instruments running varying sounds. I also have stored macro variations for those instruments in case I need some sound immediately without menu diving (like 1/16 note hi hats).

The cycled instruments instruments are mostly from my tracks in Amphibious / Aural Spirits that are all controlled by four channels on my Xone K1. Initially I tried using Tip by K-Devices and Map-8 to disable a swath of devices (thanks One Child Policy for the tip!). Yet I found that the CPU load was comparable with just leaving the devices on and simply stopping clips. This made for a much better workflow.

I slowly progress through the cycled instruments while improvising with the constant instruments and the main drums / accenting discussed below.

My iPad is running Werkbench by Karl Scholz @karlalamusic, a sequencer sampler app that can easily form interesting polyrhythms and is great for anything sample-related, like live accenting, bass lines, drums, etc.

For the main drums I didn’t want to be too focused on sequencing as it takes up a lot of time, so I just wanted to scroll through patterns that I generate beforehand. I opted to use a modified version of Instant Haus by @alexkid which stores drum patterns for four-five instruments. Modifying this was a bit challenging as it is difficult to determine what kind of patterns I think can stay interesting over an hour time period. This is playing Smackos 808 Simulator by @legowelt-official as well as other custom drum instruments.

For acid lines I am using a Roland TB03 on lend from Indy Nyles and sequencing the 303 with Sting by Iftah Gabbai  as well as his Microtuner device coupled with note echos (I believe this is the most CPU intensive part of the set).I am using Ableton Push as a means to do miscellaneous control and Jaw Harp / Mic for some added organic-ness.

I am running all of this through an Apollo Twin Duo and Allen & Heath Xone 96 at the club.
