Crazy Penis 'A Little Something' (PBR Streetgang Rmx)

Athlete Whippets productions are simply encapsulating and their first outing on House of Disco is something a little different for the label. From the first track ‘Talk About This Love’ the London/Berlin duo draw you in with dreamy pads and submerged vocals and there’s this wonderful quiet energy that holds you and you don’t want to let go.

Their second original ‘Dreams Of Being Alone’ channels that same moreish energy but with a little more enthusiasm and joy. Skittering and splashy drum programming is offset by the wonderful playfulness of that marimba-esque synth which plants your feet firmly in the sand of some lonely beach. 

Shall we talk about the remixes? First up Demuja takes ‘Dreams Of Being Alone’ and whips you off the beach and onto the dance-floor adding a tougher 4/4 approach with some punchy strings to get you swinging while keeping that marimba front and centre. 

For the second remix we have Aroop Roy tackling ‘Talk About This Love’ and as expected this versatile producer has gone his own way adding keys, baselines and just generally doing something totally new and interesting.

Alex Andrikopolous AKA Lex (Athens) released his brilliant debut album Waving in 2022 on Leng and he now returns with an EP combining fine remixes of tracks from Waving alongside two new previously unheard cuts.

The remixes are undeniably special. Fittingly, the EP begins with the first of these, a sensationally sun-soaked revision of one of Andrikopolous’s most Balearic moments – previous single ‘Punta Allen’ – by former Nuphonic fusionists and FAR label founders Faze Action. The Lee brothers’ take is one of those sunset-friendly workouts that wraps glistening guitar licks, steel pan style motifs, Lex’s gorgeous lead lines, hazy electric piano solos and life-affirming keyboard riffs around rolling nu-disco beats and a new rubbery bassline courtesy of Robin Lee himself. It has the feel of a pool-side anthem in the making.

Just as potent is the typically quirky and hard-to-pigeonhole revision of ‘Prezend’ by Manchester maverick Ruf Dug. Here he offers up a genuinely revolutionary rework, re-imaging the track as a sparse-but-colourful fusion of vintage acid house bass, saucer-eyed piano riffs, dubbed-out synth sounds, jacking lo-fi drum machine beats and squelchy TB-303 tweaks. While fresh and undeniably contemporary, the remix has an alluringly nostalgic, retro-futurist vibe. 

Clustered around these two top-notch revisions is a pair of previously unreleased Lex originals. He joins forces with regular collaborator Locke once more on ‘Libre De Amor’, an infectious chunk of, low-slung dub disco marked out by weighty bass, jammed-out electric piano motifs, spacey pads, intergalactic effects and mazy synth solos. Dotted with additional percussion hits and echoing female vocal snippets, it’s one of the pair’s most potent dancefloor workouts of recent times.

To round off a rock-solid EP, the Athens-based veteran blurs the boundaries between stripped-back, late-80s house nostalgia and nu-disco. ‘Super Awake’ boasts cowbell-sporting Chicago house beats and acid house inspired bass, on to which he’s layered all manner of colourful synth sounds, jangly piano stabs and spacey electronics. Throw in some typically immersive chords and progressively more psychedelic TB-303 motifs, and you have a genuinely triumphant conclusion to a formidably floor-focused EP.

Lex (Athens) & Locke - Libre De Amor

Lumberjacks in Hell proudly presents its next 12" from the English producer Goshawk, marking his much-anticipated debut on the label. Goshawk brings a solid repertoire of productions characterized by a soulful disco vibe, already showcased in his collaborations with Erik Rico on Atjazz Record Company and Situatism, not to mention his stellar remix for Groovement Inc. - Love and Affection.

This 12" features four tracks that blend soulful boogie with house influences, delivering a fresh and captivating sound. The A1 track, "Loyalty" featuring LYMA, offers a distinct Detroit vibe with a low-slung funky bassline and LYMA's sultry vocals. A2 spotlights Greg Blackmann's powerful vocals over a dynamic piano chop, creating an engaging and energetic groove.

Sly Stone died recently and we lost one of the great pioneers of funk music. He was a great influence on modern music and changed the rules for how people made soul, funk and dance music. He had his problems with drugs but his legacy rather than the bad press will survive. He was a tremendous influence on me and having seen his band at their peak showed just how good they were live. RIP Sly. You will be missed.

With its twelfth release Mireia Records is focusing the gaze          inwards: Neukölln neighbors, synth whizzes, and most importantly        friends, Conga Fever and Johannes Klingebiel picked a song from each           other’s repertoire and remixed it into bliss. 
 
Johannes is wooing Conga Fever’s sleeper hit “Arabian Guy” down into           the basement and into disco territory. While preserving the hypnotic          deepness of the original track, he adds a fluttering bass line and            glistening melody swatches.

Touted as the next Lindstrom, Third Attempt is the production moniker of Torje Fagertun Spilde, a 22 year old artist and DJ based in Tromsø. A natural fit for Beatservice' left-field take on cosmic disco and wonky house, Third Attempt's album 'World Is Too Loud' continues with his signature style of funk and disco, jazz and deep house . Here we feature 'Transit'; an organic slice of downbeat jazzy grooves. Shuffling drums and slick live elements combine for a smokey, bluesy affair. Unmistakable in its Nordic style, and reminiscent of early Paper Recordings and Svek Records.

Three years on from his latest solo outing, Crazy P founder member Chris Todd AKA Hot Toddy returns to House of Disco with a predictably fine four-tracker. Our pick of a very strong bunch is the toughened up, revivalist electrofunk flex of "Wilde Touch", where clipped guitar riffs, crunchy Clavinet lines and colourful melodies ride a rubbery bassline, though the Paper Recordings-era Crazy P deep house/disco fusion of "Still We Are" is almost as impressive. Speaking of Crazy P, lead singer Danielle Moore lends her distinctive vocals to the Imagination-ish Brit-boogie business of "Positive Emotion", while the EP's other track, opener "Synthesize", is a darker and more spaced-out chunk of weighty, bassline-driven nu-boogie goodness.
