In our inaugural episode, hosts Xavier D. Stickler, Bradley Bondy, and Jenna Deml introduce themselves, and set the stage for primary themes of discussion throughout the course of this series.

They address the general consensus which is that Portland is deeply unhappy and institutions are not properly equipped to correct it just yet. However, the path towards improvement lies in realizing change is possible, but it is crucial to understand what the local community can and cannot accomplish. Despite all of the negative press and opinions surrounding Portland, the team close out with why they continue to keep positive about the city in which they were born and raised, and also explain the meaning behind the name, “Greater Greater Portland.”

It goes without saying that climate change is part of the fabric of our lives these days, as rising sea levels, storms, and the other consequences of high-carbon economies start to take their toll on the environment. But Portland faces a unique set of climate challenges and has a unique opportunity to respond. We’ll be talking through those challenges and responses this week with our panel:

Heidi Sickert joins us from Portland Community College, where she teaches a course about eco-innovation and social entrepreneurship. She’s also the chair of the college’s Sustainability Practices for Academics and Resources Council, and an independent consultant.

Sam Pardue is the CEO and founder of Indow, a local window insert manufacturer that is also a member of the Oregon Business Alliance for Climate, a climate policy advocacy group.

And at the top of the show, Biz503 producer Coby Hutzler visits Jana Gastellum at the Oregon Environmental Council, an environmental advocacy membership organization. She’s the council’s program director for climate, and she spoke to Coby about the threats Portland faces from climate change, and how businesses—large and small—can do their part to fight it.

Biz503 S03E15 - Global Warming and Small Businesses

For many higher-ed students, the trade-off of obtaining a diploma isn’t just four-plus years and a lot of hard work – it’s also a daunting sum of money paid out to colleges and universities. Many students patchwork their way through the financial burden with a mix of grants, parental support, scholarships, out-of-pocket payments…and student loans.

And while  these loans seem like a great opportunity to students trying to get through school, loans can turn from financial stepping stones into debt sinkholes. Last fall, the U.S. Department of Education, put the average student loan debt at $33,310, and the total student loan debt at $1.44 trillion. 

There are myriad reasons student loan debt stacks up, and a lot forks in the road to repayment. But regardless of how daunting the bill may be, and how easy it is to ignore the rising tide of debt, students will ultimately have to close the gap.

Winery Biographies

Dion Vineyard

Just outside of greater Portland, off the Hillsboro Highway 219, nestled in the Chehalem Mountains of the northern Willamette Valley, is Dion’s 60-acre vineyard dating back to 1976 and their small winery and tasting room. Their family-owned and operated enterprise maintains an intentionally small annual production as part of their commitment to offer the highest quality wines at exceptional values.

Winemaker Kevin Johnson, founded the winery in 2007 and carries on third-generation winegrowing traditions. His grandfather began the legacy by growing grapes and producing wines near Sunnyside, Washington. For over 45 years, Kevin and his family have been growing wine grapes in their little slice of beautiful Oregon, just outside the city.

Their production includes primarily Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. They also offer in limited quantities: Sparkling Wines, Tempranillo, Rose, Viognier, and Chardonnay.  Kevin and his wife Beth Klingner handcraft around 1000 cases per year.  They still provide premium wine grapes to other Willamette Valley wineries from their 60 acres
Bradley Vineyards

Bradley Vineyards was founded in 1983 by brothers John and Richard Bradley. With the helping hands of family and friends, nearly 30 acres of Pinot Noir, Gewurtztraminer and Riesling grapes were planted in the South and West facing hills of Elkton, Oregon.

For the first 17 years, John developed as a viticulturist, and sold the entirety of his crop to wineries around the state of Oregon. But when friends Mike and Vonnie Landt moved to town and built their winery, River’s Edge, a partnership began allowing John to start producing a small amount of wine under the Bradley Vineyards label.

In the early 2000s, John expanded the vineyard by planting a small block of Baco Noir grapes, as well as grafting Baco Noir onto a portion of mature Gewurtztraminer vines. He also introduced a small block of Pommard, a clone of Pinot Noir. After John’s untimely passing in 2014, the Vineyards continue to thrive under the leadership of his wife, Bonnie. Their son, Tyler cares for the vineyard and makes the wines at the River’s Edge Winery facilities on the west end of Elkton.

In addition, Stafford shares three poems entitled, “Shelter in Place,” “For a Daughter in Quarantine,” and “Spring Fever in Lockdown.”

He also gives us a little teaser describing his upcoming book, “Singer Come From Afar” out March 2021.
