Camping on Retro Avenue

This is my first solo digital EP, all created on the iPad, with tracking, mixing and production done primarily in NanoStudio, supported by a phalanx of iOS synth apps.

I Think I’m Trouble

As with my last posting (“Contact Score”), this track is again a bit out of my comfort zone as it was as an entry for the Facebook iPad Musician Group’s Ambient contest.  It seemed I bent the rules just a hair by having an entry that wasn’t strictly ambient, but this is the “ambient” that I know.

The track was created 100% on an iPad in NanoStudio, using additional patches from Sunrizer, Alchemy Mobile and iKaossilator.

If you don’t know what a Hooloovoo is, Don’t Panic.  Just grab your towel, a few pints of beer, and enjoy the ride.

Meet You In The Stratosphere

Contest entry created for the iPad Musician Group Single Sample Challenge.

This was done 100% in NanoStudio, with the single sample loaded into 5 different instances of the Eden synth as the sound source, and the each instance of Eden was programmed into a different synth patch.

To get the sample into NanoStudio, I downloaded the challenge sample from DropBox into Hokusai Audio Editor and trimmed to just the first 22 seconds of the sample.  Mixed it down and uploaded to DropBox, imported from DropBox into AudioShare and then ACP'd into NanoStudio.

IMG Contest Entry: Honey & Whiskey

If the Beastie Boys circa “Check Your Head” and Rush circa “Moving Pictures” both time traveled to 2014 to collaborate on the soundtrack for the new Star Wars movie, there’s a pretty good chance it wouldn’t sound anything remotely like this track.  Then again, maybe it would.

This was written, recorded and mixed in NanoStudio and mastered in Auria on the iPad.

The iPad Musician's Group put out a challenge to create a short track on the iPhone/iPad that described how I felt about iOS 8.  The title pretty much explains it all.  Very happy with iOS 7 where everything still works, thank you.

Apps used were Figure, NanoStudio, Bassline, Audiobus and Sunrizer.

This is an older track done in Reason (started in 2010).  I revisit it every so often and tweak the mix and/or add or modify a part.  I don't think it's quite done yet.  It will continue to evolve.

The Way We Were

This track is for all those out there defying the odds and fighting to survive.

Composed and recorded in NanoStudio on an iPad, using Audiobus, Alchemy, iGrand, Sunrizer and Figure.  Guest drum performance from Whitney Jacobson (drum groove converted to MIDI using Melodyne and the mapped in NanoStudio).


Though She be but Little, She is Fierce

Recorded in NanoStudio.  Inspiration came from playing around with some patches in the new Addictive Synth for iPad (which were then brought in as samples to NS).  Some newly programmed Sunrizer patches also are included here, too.

Singularity

This track started out as a piano instrumental and somehow developed into a bit of a retro throwback / homage to Simple Minds / Tears For Fears / O.M.D. when it made the leap to being recorded in NanoStudio.  Those bands have clearly embedded themselves in my subconscious.

Keep Dreaming

This track is the result of merging two different ideas I had been developing.  Once combined, the sound reminded me a bit of what one might hear on a modern game soundtrack.

Once Upon A JRPG

This is my first track in over 18 months.  Life got hectic, but I found some new workflow, which means this is also my first track done entirely on my iPhone in years, rather than using the iPad.  Using the phone meant I could work in bits and pieces as time permitted with 5-10 minutes here and there wherever I happened to be.

The New Tech refers to all the new apps that I was slowly adding to my phone but had been gathering cyber-dust during my music hiatus, which I now delved into for this track.

New Tech

This was my first opportunity to record a two-handed piano part using ThumbJam now that it supports Core MIDI.  Similar to some prior efforts, this song evolved from the merging of two different ideas.  Apart from the piano part played in ThumbJam, the rest of the song was recorded in NanoStudio.

Alter Ego

The somewhat Sci-Fi vibe wasn't planned, but as layers where added, this track started feel like it was 70's retro Sci-Fi inside a modern electronic wrapper.  Of course, that's just how I heard it.  Regardless, it was fun to play and record.

Homeworld

So, the 80’s have once again clawed their way out of my subconscious and taken up residence in NanoStudio, inviting Sunrizer and Alchemy Mobile over to play.

It was not my intention to make such an 80’s sounding piece, and particularly, a chorus that so clearly evokes the Cure’s “Just Like Heaven,” but that is more or less what seems to have happened.  Must have been all those years playing keys in an 80’s cover band.

So, influences that I can self identify here are the aforementioned Cure, as well as New Order, Journey and Human League.  There are probably more here that I haven’t figured out yet.


JDSLT (Just Don't Stop Like a Triangle)

Waiting for NS2, I decided to go back and explore GarageBand on the iPhone after a number of years of ignoring it and see what new tricks it had up its sleeve.  Turns out it has a few nice ones.  This track was done entirely in GB on the iPhone.  In the auv3 department, I used bs-16i for piano and Galileo 2 for organ, as well as Bram Bos’ Kosmonaut and Perforator for effects on some GB sounds.

Sub-Atomic Lost & Found

Inspiration for this track came from trawling for sounds in Addictive Synth while crashed on the couch with the iPad late on a Friday night after a long week.  I got a little groove going in Addictive, using DM1 for drums in the background, and then took it from there into NanoStudio.  I had a lot of fun putting this track together, though the end result is perhaps both a bit more simplistic and potentially a bit more over the top than my other tracks.

Daybreak

Reduce Reuse Recycle.  Usually a good philosophy, though perhaps not so much when applied to songwriting.  When I was finishing this track up, I was listening to it in the context of my other recent efforts and came to the realization that many of my rhythms and syncopations in the chord changes and synth lines across several of these songs were very similar, if not almost entirely the same in some cases.

I liked how this track turned out, so I kept things the way they were, but it did dawn on me that I do need to come up with some new grooves while not on auto-pilot.  Hence the name of this track.

Everything was tracked in NanoStudio on the iPad, with several sounds being sampled from ThumbJam and Sunrizer and then further manipulated in NS.  I also wanted to thank Ptero on the NanoStudio forums for providing a fantastic piano sound for NS, which utilizes the new slicing feature to mimic a multi-sampled piano.


Brother, Can You Spare A Groove?

I was experimenting with iElectribe, Glitchbreaks and some new patches in NLog Pro, and it seemed like I was en route to create my first edgy dubstep track.  Things got completely derailed when I hit the chorus and everything took a turn towards a pop/soundtrack vibe.  Rather than try to redirect the track to the leanings of the initial genre (which I am admittedly pretty clueless about), I just went with where my gut inclination took me and played up the whole soundtrack bit.

As usual, NanoStudio on the iPad played the role of  “Grand Central Station” where all parts were either recorded or assembled.   Additional synth apps used were Sunrizer, ThumbJam, Alchemy  and SampleWiz.

Turning the Tide

My first track completed in NanoStudio2.  Additional iOS apps used (via AUv3) were Factory, SynthMaster One, SynthMaster Player, BASSalicious, and iSymphony.

Starfield

So this is probably one of the more randomly put together tracks I’ve done recently.  It all started by experimenting with patterns and effects in DM1 and playing over the resulting groove separately in Magellan and SampleTank (which is actually useful as an iOS app now that it has ACP).  Some sections were driven by the Magellan jamming and some by the SampleTank jamming.  In the end, I think everything somehow managed to tie together.

iPad apps used: DM1, Magellan, SampleTank, Animoog, Sunrizer, Alchemy and the venerable NanoStudio (were all parts were mixed and either assembled or recorded).

Juliana Will Fix Everything

This track started as a sketch in Figure and morphed into my first track using Audiobus.  I pasted my Figure parts into MultiTrack DAW and started layering in various synth parts into MTD via Audiobus (including my first chance to record some parts with iMS-20).

Somewhere along the way it occurred to me that a piano part that I had sitting around for a long time would work well with the Figure sketch.  Since Bismark’s bs-16i just became Audiobus compliant, it was a great opportunity to try recording the piano part in MTD along side what was already there.

Everything eventually made its way from MTD into NanoStudio, where the arrangement was further developed, new parts were added and the track was mixed.

Rise

Inspiration for this track came from a 1 measure loop I created in triqtraq quite a while back.  I had forgotten about it and then decided to give triqtraq another look once Audiobus and ACP support came with the app’s latest update.  I discovered the little sonic doodle I had created months prior and ACP’d it into NanoStudio.  From there I just started adding new parts and layers in NanoStudio, and the whole thing morphed into its present form.

Below is a collection of music I’ve written and recorded since the iPhone / iPad became a viable platform for playing and recording music.  Nearly everything here was written and recorded in NanoStudio or NanoStudio 2 with dozens of supporting iOS apps.  As such, these tracks are quirky electronic creations with strong pop and symphonic elements, often peppered with bluesy riffs or solos.
