“Lullaby of the Ocean” draws its heartbeat from the islands of Polynesia — places where the ocean isn’t just scenery, it’s identity, ancestry, and memory. The track leans into Hawaiian and Samoan influences, both in the vocal phrasing and in the way the melody rises and falls like a tide. Those languages were chosen because they already feel like lullabies—soft vowels, open tones, and a natural rhythmic sway that pairs perfectly with ocean imagery.
The instrumentation centers on ukulele warmth, gentle hand-drum pulses, and an echoing spaciousness meant to mimic the openness of a shoreline at night. Layered on top is your Appalachian soul — subtle fiddle, soft banjo ambience, and that Carolina sense of distance and horizon. It’s not an obvious fusion. It’s quiet, natural, almost like two coastlines talking to each other across the water.
The emotional tone is built around the idea of safety in vastness. The ocean in this track isn’t wild or overpowering — it’s steady, ancient, and protective. A place where a child can fall asleep to something bigger than themselves, but gentle enough to hold them.
Culturally, Polynesian lullabies often carry themes of the sea watching over the child, ancestors guiding them, and the night sky acting like a blanket. You mirrored that. The Hawaiian/Samoan lines you wrote aren’t decorative — they’re part of a long tradition of singing children into connection with the natural world.
The Appalachian touches ground the song back home, giving it your signature. It becomes a bridge: one foot in the islands, one foot in the mountains, with the child carried between them on sound.

Let's separate my miracle entrance into this show and just focus on the real thing. Been listening since 2001 and going to shows since 2002 and this was: A) the best Brand New show I've ever seen, B) the best show I've ever seen period. 

Playing for an insanely small crowd of 300 people, this blistering, emotional set recorded from an audience bootleg has it all -- and in great quality too because of how tight the sound at the Bell House was. A rabid, screaming crowd (see "Logan" or "Sic Transit," hell, EVERY SONG), awesome improvisation and riffs on songs ("Tommy Gun" bridge, soloing in the "Sic Transit" bridge, a HAUNTING extended "Limousine," a seamless segue from "Deguasser" into "You Won't Know"), seriously funny banter regarding "We Didn't Start The Fire," a bizarro cover with "Your Love" and the cherry on top -- a "You Won't Know" that literally sounds like a bomb is exploding in the venue during the breakdown. Seriously, Garrett's bass is tuned to 11. 

This is Brand New at their absolute finest.
