[TN046] Deas - Perception EP

DEAS has not gone unnoticed and kept popping up in Abstract Division’s playlists. It is therefore a real pleasure to have him on board at the Nursery. His “Perception EP” explores multiple disciplines within the techno spectrum. Grooving, hypnotizing, relieving and melancholic are distinctive keywords within this five track EP.

On various levels DEAS knows exactly to get a grip on your attention and delivers what a proper techno release should be all about.

Some people are just not destined to have enough sleep. When you don’t sleep enough the world appears to be a different place, compared to the way it is when the mind is fully rested. In such cases very different scenarios may occur.

Starting with a dreamy melody of Roma Zuckerman’s “Sleep not found”, which inspired the entire Трип 008 album, and ending with a thirteen minute live recording by a_000, the side project of Alex Backdrop, the entire record has a dreamy and tripped out flow.

трип 008 continues the tradition of gatefold double EPs as conceptual album.All tracks are selected around a particular story, a trip, and presented as a continuous sonic landscape.All tracks are structured in a way that they can be mixed one with another an endless amount of times making a continuous loop, a trip, that needs only end when the party stops. Kraviz works without release dates or deadlines, enabling her to achieve a certain sound bank to shape the story, unmasking the thoughts and unravelling like a dream.

Scuba’s entry in the revered fabric mix series features four debut-making artists, three of whom - Isaac Reuben, Glaskin, Blursome - feature on the present sampler 12” alongside the already-emerging talent of Tallmen785.

Together they cover a rich gamut of style. Tallmen’s gear-shifting opener - a charge of the techno brigade replete with live drum fills - leads into Blursome’s compact, broken, nocturnal outcry. Isaac Reuben then messes with structure and genre, bringing deep house tropes into a lofi, rough and raw world before Glaskin blow the
door wide open right at the very end to reveal their cavernous, ultra deep field.

You’ll be hearing a lot from all of them on Hotflush in the coming months, so for now
let the music break the ice.

Round 2 of the Soma 25 series sees the legendary Funk D’Void receive the remix treatment as his seminal ‘Jack Me Off’  taken from his debut Soma EP and further classic ‘Bad Coffee’ are reworked by Gary Beck, Christian Wunsch, Alex Smoke & Charles Fenckler respectively. FDV has been one of Soma’s most important artists, releasing some of the label’s earliest hits such as Diabla and working with the likes of Phil Kieran & Sian.

Scottish Techno phenomenon Gary Beck kicks things off with his take on Bad Coffee firing out a solid peak time burner in true Beck fashion and utilising the original’s quirky samples to great effect. Next up Jack Me Off is brought in the modern era by Tsunami label boss, Christian Wunsch who immediately sets about creating a sub heavy, hypnotic affair aimed firmly at the heavier edge of the Techno spectrum. Another well renowned Soma artist steps up to take on Jack Me Off as Alex Smoke brings his more diverse expertise to the table. A twisted, funk infused affair is the order of the day with fast paced and innovative use of the original definitely taking it to new places! Soma’s new blood, Charles Fenckler closes out the EP with his Rave Mix of Bad Coffee. Fenckler’s sights are firmly fixated on the dance floor with this version as he lets loose a no holds barred retake on FDV’s original.

Detroit pioneer Robert Hood joins Radio Slave’s Rekids label with a fourteen track album entitled ‘Mirror Man’ this November.

A founding member of Underground Resistance alongside Mad Mike Banks and Jeff Mills, Robert Hood is one of techno’s originators and his decorated career spans three decades. The American artist and his M-Plant label laid down the blueprint for minimal techno and 1994’s ‘Minimal Nation’ on Axis was a definitive album that further cemented Hood’s reputation as one of the greats to emerge from the Motor City.

Since then, Hood has gone on to release on many of electronic music’s best labels like Tresor, Peacefrog, Music Man Records, Dekmantel and more. After a busy few years making music and touring as Floorplan alongside his daughter Lyric, Hood now joins Rekids with an album showcasing his innate knack for crafting paired back but intricate rhythms that deliver punch and soul.

Opening with the cinematic ‘Through A Looking Glass Darkly’, the album quickly flows into precise, powerful four four. There’s mesmerising cuts such as ‘Fear Not’ with its throbbing bass and spectral vocals, the twisted and off-key ‘Run Bobby, Run’, not to mention muscular tracks designed to light up dancefloors like the machine driven ‘Ignite A War’ or the robust and rumbling ‘The Cure’.
Hood also breaks things up with downtempo and mind bending interludes, including the tranquil yet spooky ‘Black Mirror’ and the beatless and murky ‘Freeze’. Each of these are aural feasts that demonstrate his vast musical pallet.

From start to finish ‘Mirror Man’ is an education in finesse from one of techno’s most heroic artists, landing on one of electronic music’s most important labels.
