@WillHofbauer debuts on Aus Music with ‘Four! Beats!’.
Will Hofbauer has been carving out his idiosyncratic niche in dance music for the past few years, with releases on Rinse FM, Wisdom Teeth and his Third Place seeing critical acclaim as well as high-profile co-signs from the likes of Ben UFO, rRoxymore, Lukas Wigflex, Dr Banana and now, Will Saul and his indomitable Aus Music imprint.
Hofbauer’s ‘Ah! Bats!’ is up first on ‘Four! Beats!’, featuring a speedy dembow beat, rowdy vocal chops, and call-back, signature use of subtle animal sounds that fit right in. The aptly named ‘8 Bar Baile’ is next, a baile funk track built up like 8 bar grime, swapping rhythm in every section for a high-energy, peak-time affair.
Smooth and introspective house cut ‘Scrumble’ then sees whimsical bursts of synths splash on top of delicate drums before Will Hofbauer’s ‘Moss On’ dives deeper underwater with loose arrangement and tripped-out instrumentation.

The fourth instalment in Pev's Pulse series finds him further widening the scope of his sound as he touches on the distinct energies which inform his unique strain of soundsystem techno. 

'Pulse XIII' deals in stark, tweaked-out acid lines cutting through a taut drum machine backbone, balanced out with a sci-fi pad which lets you know its Pev at the controls. 'Pulse XIV' finds him dialling up his jungle roots once more for a dreamy excursion into diced up breaks, cascading synths and dislocated piano chord chops. There's a deeper dub techno spirit to 'Pulse XV' and 'Pulse XVI' deals in the raw, bleep-informed jack tracks that have started to creep into Pev's sound as the Pulse series has evolved.

Nadī and Otus return with Freefall, a 4-track EP that transforms turbulent emotions into defiant dancefloor optimism

The release opens with “Salt”, a fresh take on the classic Speed Garage sound “It’s the kind of track I’d want to lose myself to,” Nadī shares. Beneath its warping basslines, tight percussion, and undeniable groove lies a Bengali vocal sample, a subtle but powerful addition that reclaims space in a genre historically dominated by one voice.

“Pari” sticks with the Garage tip but swaps out the 4x4 drums for something a little steppier. Transmitting the in-your-face, aggro energy of early 2000s Grime, the bassline growls and snarls throughout the arrangement. The wavering tremolo effect of the vocal sample is one for the club lighting technicians, creating a prime strobe opportunity.

“Bombay” is a peak time bruiser. The big, tonking bassline gives a respectful doff of the bucket hat to 90s rave music. It’s overlaid with crunchy claps, feisty vocal chops, and an ominous, prangy synth that creates a menacing mood.

Title track, “Freefall” rounds out the EP, putting the breaks on and slowing things right down to chug territory. It is proper end of the night material, filled with uplifting vocals and layered synths that shine through like a hopeful ray of sunshine at the afters.The cherry on the cake has to be the master tempo grinding to a halt at the end of the track, a gentle reminder that it might be time to get some shut eye.

Pentland Park return to Lava Lava this March with their sophomore EP for the Glasgow label. ‘Turismo’ follows on from a highly-acclaimed 2023 Italo/Nu-Disco label debut and an amazing contribution to last year’s WAVES compilation.

With their latest 4-track EP, the Glaswegian duo showcase their impressive and diverse range of production prowess, creating a record which is catered towards intimate and unforgettable dance floor moments.

Opening the EP, ’Nostalgic’ is a dynamic dance floor-focussed track where raw percussion, retro hand claps and squelching bass hits skip alongside swirling pads and hazy melodies. The title track perfectly encapsulates the playfulness of the duo. Bright pads, soft trumpet samples and light acid tinged synth lines weave alongside a bouncing bass line and choppy vocal hooks.

‘Love Your Neighbour’ is a nod to Afro-House where shuffling percussion and twinkling synths bounce alongside deep low-end stabs and horn samples. Chopped vocals subtly unfold to give a real evocative energy. Finally, ’Rooftop’ is constantly evolving throughout with resonant bass, a crisp rhythm section and cinematic atmospherics intertwining with sharp synth licks.
