(Verse 1)
I was driving hard from Memphis, wheels were spinnin' through the dust,
Got a gig in Macon County, gotta be there before the sun is cussed.
Pulled into a roadside tavern, maybe fifty miles too soon,
Just wanted one cold beer beneath the blinding afternoon.
Walked inside, the air was thick with smoke and yesterday's despair,
And sitting on a stool in the corner, with a look that didn't care,
Was the legend himself, ol' Hank Williams, hat tipped low upon his brow,
Nursing something amber, quiet as a broken vow.

(Verse 2)
The bartender poured my draft and pointed at the legend there,
I just nodded slow, trying not to gawk, knowing I shouldn't stare.
Then a local man, half-loaded, with a chip right on his shoulder,
Slid up close to Hank and got a little bit bolder.
He slurred, "Say, Mr. Williams, what makes you think you're so damn grand?
The biggest country singer in this entire promised land?"
Hank never moved, just swirled his glass, and fixed him with a stare,
A patient kind of sadness in the silence hanging there.

And Hank said, "Well, I never looked at it that way, friend,
I just sing my songs because people love to listen to me 'til the end."
The man just laughed, a bitter sound, and hammered on the wood,
"Then if you're so good, writer boy, write me a song right where you stood!"
I thought the King would walk away, or maybe knock him flat,
But Hank just looked him in the eyes and said, "Well, here goes that."

(Verse 3)
He reached beneath his worn coat, pulled a guitar from a case,
Didn't tune, didn't hesitate, just settled into place.
Then his voice filled up that tavern, cut clean through the smoky haze,
Singing 'bout redemption, 'bout the error of his ways.
He sang about the darkness, and the promise of the dawn,
A feeling so electric, every whisper was withdrawn.
When he hit that final chorus, pure conviction in his tone,
That song was "I Saw The Light," played for an audience of stone.

Yeah, Hank said, "Well, I never looked at it that way, friend,
I just sing my songs because people love to listen to me 'til the end."
The man who'd made the challenge looked stunned, his jaw hung slack and wide,
He saw the genius standing there, nothing left for him to hide.
I thought the King would walk away, or maybe knock him flat,
But Hank just looked him in the eyes and said, "Well, here goes that."

That local man just shook his head, amazed, he had no words to say,
Just muttered, "Man..." then bought the rounds, and washed his pride away.
Hank had a couple more drinks, bid us all a kind farewell,
Slid out the door and drove away, with a new song on the trail.
He saw the light... yeah, Hank saw the light.
