I am not a morning person but being the breadwinner I must get up earlier than I would like. Also I have arthritis in my back that only allows me about 6-7 hours of sleep before I have to get up anyway. I love waking up early to peepee and going back to sleep for a little longer-that is the sweetest sleep. I wanted the piece to be peaceful but also saying rise and shine. I was not peaceful at all making this cause all my Auturia soft synths have suddenly decided to switch sounds when I record after I labored getting the sounds I had wanted. I ended up having to record a live mix down to a track to keep my sounds. When I worked in Japan I did not have to go to work til 1 p.m. I could stay up all night. Those were the days. Also I miss the cherry blossom parties. But like the cherry blossoms themselves all things are fleeting. I clipped the end off a track I'm working on, reversed it and played around with timing and reverb. The idea of waking up to a drone possibly strikes some people as a novel one... :)

The Assignment: Compose something — quiet, peaceful, refreshing — you’d want to wake up to.

Step 1: You’ll be making music that you’d want to wake up to — music you’d like to imagine other people would want to wake up to. This isn’t “shock alert” music. It’s quiet, peaceful, refreshing.

Step 2: Compose and record something that accomplishes the goal set by Step 1.

I’ve been using a plugin called Crazy Ivan quite a bit lately, so I thought I’d feature it. I have no idea how it works, but depending on selected/accidental/guesswork settings it has a profound effect on pitch, making it rise and fall, and adds strange phasing effects, especially when you misuse it like I do.

I created a track out of samples from a couple of things I’m working on, then Crazy Ivan’d the whole thing – twice, with different settings. The only downside is that it flattens out the stereo separation, so I re-widened it, which alters the effect very slightly.

The Assignment: Compose a piece of music in which the material processed is secondary to the processing.

Project Steps:

Step 1: Consider the following. New music can often involve flipping a perceived hierarchy: between rhythm and melody, between harmonic and melodic development, and between background and foreground, for example. This project involves flipping another perceived hierarchy: between the effect employed and the source audio on which it is employed (for example, between a flanger and a rhythm guitar line, or a gate and a drum kit, or between a filter and a complex waveform).

Step 2: Create an original piece of music in which the effect is the prominent thing heard throughout, while the source audio changes frequently between varied materials. The compositional goal is that the piece still hangs together as a considered whole unto itself.

EX CANIX – “Shaman”

Shaman is the second release from the experimental music group Ex Canix, following last years’ debut, “Primi”.

The music draws inspiration from all things “cosmic” and is rooted in psych, kraut, acid, raga rock, ambient and avant-garde. Tension and balance between opposites is a hallmark for Ex Canix: e.g. order vs. chaos, earth vs. space, silence vs. thunder, harmony vs. dissonance, light vs. shade. To create, the band gets together in their collective inner space community for travels across the dimensions of mind and sound.

The root is in the rhythm and improvisation. Lars Hoffsten, of “Flowers Must Die” fame plays drums & percussion, Tjabbe Anstérus handles diverse forms of percussion and hang drum and Hans Bengtén plays bass. The rest of the aural spectrum is covered by Boch on electronics, cello, guitar, voice and some bass. Håkke Müller, who sadly left us in the spring of 2018, is still with us in sound and spirit as he left a rich heritance of heavenly sounds which is incorporated.

The group first got together in early 2015, although the history of playing together in different constellations goes back to the mid 1970s. This bunch of space travellers is experienced! All tracks were recorded at Bullerbyn, Linköping, Sweden, between November 2017 and September 2018. All tracks by Ex Canix. The album is produced by Ex Canix, mixed by Boch, mastered by Viktor Ottosson. The cover is created by Lars Hoffsten and Martin Daun is responsible for the layout.
