MMXX-20 : SHIVA FESHAREKI - NEBULA (extract)

"Klangturm" was commissioned by the Immanuelkirche church in Hamburg-Veddel. The church had recently replaced its bells with a loudspeaker and automated playback system and had asked a number of artists to compose music to be played hourly as well as shorter sounds to be played 15, 30 and 45 minutes past the hour. 

Thinking about what sounds have bell-like properties (but aren't bells) and taking into consideration the technical limitations of the bell tower's loudspeaker (mono, limited bass and high frequency), I decided to work with a limited pallet of just electric guitar and a few effects pedals (reverb, tremolo, pitch shifter, envelope). 

Each piece at the full hour is "previewed" by short fragments of its component parts at the preceding 15, 30 and 45 minute mark. Some, but not all, of the pieces include a time-telling element; a melody with the same number of notes as the hour. 

These pieces were played back from the bell tower of the church from 8 AM to 8 PM every day (except Mondays) during July 2021.

SG is none other than Andrew Pekler returning to faitiche with an album of sentimental guitar escapism. For Lovers Only / Rain Suite features ten tracks made using only an electric guitar and a handful of effects pedals (plus some additional recordings of rain) and finds Pekler once again attempting to reconicile his tendencies towards kitsch, experimentation and minimalism.   What does Pekler's pseudonym SG stand for? Sentimental Guitar? Sound Gallery? Shy Guy? Sad Gnosis? Saudade Glamour? Soft Goth? We don't know, but we asked notorious Chicago romantic Sam Prekop for his take on the album – his reply:

SG (Andrew Pekler): Sentimental Guitar Dream

Jake Muir's latest set of soft-focus, sensual electro-concrète, dissolves X-rated gay sleaze flick soundtracks into a shimmering suite of subdued orchestral flourishes and surreal cosmic psychedelia.

After 2020's 'the hum of your veiled voice', a romantic, neo-noir set of nocturnal rattles and lubricated rumbles, Muir began to approach a new concept. Putting together a long-form mix for Honey Soundsystem, he began to consider the eroticized soundscapes of gay subculture outside of the mainstream, looking closely at texture, psychedelia and emotionality.

The idea was to represent queer sexuality in a looser, more experimental manner, grazing the super-sensory pleasure of the bathhouse experience and the illicit joy of cruising without getting too self-serious while doing it. The mix was so popular that Muir followed it up with a weightless sequel two years later, and began developing the concept into a proper album, using more samples of music and dialogue, eventually performing the piece at the esteemed GRM as part of their FOCUS #4 concerts alongside work by Eliane Radigue, Folke Rabe and Chris Watson.

This month we welcome Tokyo-based electronic sound artist and lyricist, Yumi Iwaki.

Yumi is an extraordinary talent, who layers her voice, acoustic instruments, field recordings, modular synthesisers, and small synthesisers, as if travelling through an imagined landscape.

Her mix takes us through a selection of music she likes to listen to when she wants to relax, but at the same time add something spicy. The flow of sounds take her to different places while in a daze.

First vinyl edition of the album Rhetorical Islands, originally released by Giuseppe Ielasi in 2012 as a limited-edition CD on his Senufo Editions label, with recordings made in 2011 as a commission for l’Audible Festival, Paris.

The album’s ten tracks have neither titles nor accompanying text, standing for themselves as what Ielasi himself has called “isolated sound worlds”. They are nonetheless unparalleled in their plasticity, acoustic events with a rare degree of tangibility. Ielasi evokes physical objects, some of which seem to have been constructed out of paper and cardboard, others based on a mechanics of elastic materials. Of course these objects are hallucinations, and precisely because Ielasi constructs them so masterfully there’s no need for any further information. The front and back cover features 0.058, a work on paper by the artists Thomas & Renée Rapedius. They make sculptures whose form and artistic inspiration are defined by their materials. Like Ielasi’s acoustic islands, their impact derives from self-referentiality, resulting in paradoxical objects that embody both a detailed material study and a potential for free association.
