Peak time dance remixes by Caro and Marshall Watson for Big Phone's Black Earth App Worship  

Seattle's Caro aka Randy Jones of Madrona Labs and Orac Records comes out of brief musical retirement with a 'palindrome' mix of Honey.  A rare treat from this local northwest maven.

San Francisco producer Marshall Watson first appeared on Peloton's Bicycles Are Your Friends, and rewards us with two variations of Glow 4 Me.   He works as a sound designer and composer for Sirius Sound, and is also a freelance composer and recording artist. Dutch-born Seattle techno producer Phaedrus (aka Joris Kamma) continues his hot streak after a long hiatus with this all-killer/no-filler EP. Following his 2018 Game Of Tones 12-inch on Transfusions/Medical, My Second Query Language represents his most powerful and inventive release to date.

Opening track “No Strings Attached” immediately thrusts you into a cavernous warehouse scenario where the psychedelic production details accumulate like ivy on a wall. The track is a paragon of booming, swift techno with a panoply of intricate, fascinating percussive filigrees and vocal trickery inhabiting the lacunae between the beats—exactly what you want to hear at 4am when you need your third wind. “Commoners Table Expressions” reveals Phaedrus' acute ear for strange, compelling timbres within a severe, brutal techno framework, à la Cristian Vogel and Si Begg. The concatenation of crazy sounds caroms, fibrillates, and knocks around the throbbing bass and pounding kicks like at least four malfunctioning video games. Sublime chaos ensues. The menacing, metallic “Left Joint” veers into dubbed-out, bleepy machine funk, with its decaying, psychedelic drones arcing across the night sky.

If the EP's first three cuts haven't put your mind and body through enough punishing pleasure, the final two versions of “No Strings Attached” should launch you into an even higher state of consciousness. “No Strings Attached (TwoWave Body Remix)” throws more vocal mindfuckery into the mix, as Cascadian duo TwoWave slightly lighten the tone and bring a Bruno Pronsato-like springiness to the rhythm. This remix breathes a little more and opens up a portal to more joy. “No Strings Attached (TwoWave Corridors Remix)” increases the hallucinogenic properties of the original, turning this edition of “Two Strings Attached” into serious peak-time mind expansion.

By day, Phaedrus is a business analyst who sees corollaries in that job to his musical production, which inspired the EP's title, My Second Query Language. Much of his work involves massaging data (using queries) to tell a story. What may seem dry to those not familiar with the business-data world becomes in Phaedrus' alchemical hands music possessing a phenomenal impact and vivid tonal palette. The transformation is Super Man-like—minus the cape.

[PEL017] Phaedrus - My Second Query Language

Wandering In A World Without Gravity captures renowned techno producer/DJ Jerry Abstract in the early stages of his home-studio wizardry, just before he rose to prominence in Seattle’s electronic-music scene. Under the moniker Former Selv, he created the bulk of these tracks from 2002-2004, but they originally only circulated on CD-R among a tight circle of Emerald City comrades. Lying dormant for a decade has not dimmed the brilliance of the nine tracks Peloton Musique has gathered for this release.

Abstract is known and loved as a rambunctious performer and individual and some of that side of his personality seeps into the music here. But more often it’s his introspective, sensitive inclinations that color the works on Wandering. Abstract says, “Former Selv was an experiment in recreating sounds of my past lives and/or times based off of empathetic and quite vivid memories of friendships, family, places, and actions.”

“Endless Passage” opens the album with a muted foghorn motif evoking a grim melancholy. What could be Martian tidal waves roll in, making this sliver of gloomy ambience utterly intriguing. “Forbidden Peak” punctures the solemnity with metallic electro that out-funks Phoenecia, as a piercing, poignant synth pad haloes the metronomic whiplashings.

Former Selv drops more advanced rhythm science on “Forest Vox,” whose staccato beats spatter weird geometry under a forlorn synth melody of Eno-esque delicacy and beauty, and “Whydoido,” which achieves the trick of casting a sternly gorgeous synth motif over remorseless beats going through maniacal machinations. It’s an exhilarating contrast that Autechre perfected and on which Former Selv places his own distinctive spin.

Wandering also has its share of excellent beatless material. “Nüv” exudes a muted, cavernous atmosphere that’s absolutely Plutonian in its icy desolation, à la Lull and Thomas Köner. “Crimson Plateau”—which was recorded in 1992 while Abstract was going to high school in Detroit—is a spacious guitar-and-effects piece that emits powerful rays of majestic wonder. The album closes with “Monki’s Tear,” a morose meditation that’s like a sorrowful goodbye set to waxing and waning distorted accordions. After some staggering highs and chilling lows, the record has come full circle. As a portrait of the artist as a young man, Wandering In A World Without Gravity conveys dramatic sonic extremes in tracks whose technical sophistication doesn’t come at the expense of potent emotional depth.

Welcome to part one of Peloton’s soundtrack for aeronauts, aviatrix contenders, dirigible riders, creatures of flight and all those in perpetual motion: The Taking Flight EP.  “Taking Flight” is both metaphor for the label’s re-launch and a direct nod to the next collaborative theme that will take things to the skies with our upcoming theme “Birds in Flight”.

The Title track, produced by long time musical collaborator and northwest favorite Stewart Walker, is the perfect introduction and pseudo-narrative for Peloton’s second theme in the series.  After headlining the highly successful Peloton Launch party at Decibel Festival 2008, and later hearing of the label’s upcoming compilation,  Stewart contributed “First Birds of Morning”.   We asked some of our favourite northwest artists and rising stars to contribute their own interpretations maintaining the theme of taking things to the skies.

Like other electronic music capitals, the streets of Seattle are alive with clicks, buzzes, whirrs, knocks, rhythmic motion and heavy breathing. This could mean any of three things. With their first outing, upstart experimental label Peloton Music sets its ears to two of them: cycling and techno.

For “Peloton Musique, Vol. 1,” label managers Aron Schoppert, Shane Silkey, and Eli Huntington produced a sample kit comprised of pump blasts, spoke plucks, brake compresses and sprocket click-clacks from a [Insert bike model here], then asked the best producers from the Pacific Northwest and around the world to create tracks that reflect the spirit of the peloton – a team of cyclists that rides together, conserving energy and functioning as an integrated unit.

The peloton is not unlike the Northwest’s techno scene, which is now a recognized global fore, with events such as the Decibel Festival importing top talent to the region, while Seattle, Portland and Vancouver return the favor by exporting planeloads of renowned and emerging producers like Lusine, Let’s Go Outside, Jerry Abstract and Nordic Soul. Driven by a shared purpose and a sense of community, the scene has thrived in recent years, becoming both a wellspring for new talent and a must-play date for any touring artist.

Founded in this fertile environment, Peloton Musique aims to hold “techno” to its word – that it should be less of a “genre” than a new philosophy of music and sound, and a new way of thinking about their role in our lives. “We want to create music for environments, for a specific time and place, as sonic theatre,” says Schoppert. “At the same time, community is one of our guiding principles – we want to be more than the sum of our parts.”

Thus, Seattle’s best producers are joined by like-minded global contemporaries such as Markus Nikolai, [a]pendics.shuffle and Twerk (who also mastered the compilation) to deliver 21 tracks that combine the natural fit between bicycle noises and electronic music with implicit themes of health, environmental consciousness and sustainability. “Although we’re not overtly political, we certainly have a message with this release: ride a bike, get in shape, reduce your oil consumption and save the environment,” Schoppert says.

Released on April 1, 2008[?], “Peloton Musique, Vol. 1” will be a gatefold double-vinyl release with specially commissioned artwork that highlights the dance-oriented tracks, alongside a CD that dives into more abstract and environmental themes.

The peloton (from French, literally meaning little ball or platoon.  Most used to describe the large main group of riders in a road bicycle race, such as the Tour De France.

Riders in a group   save energy by riding close (drafting or slipstreaming) near(particularly behind) other riders. The peloton is not unlike the Northwest’s techno scene, which is now a recognized global force, with events such as the Decibel Festival importing top talent to the region, while Seattle, Portland and Vancouver return the favor by exporting planeloads of renowned and emerging producers among the various collectives.  

Driven by a shared purpose and a sense of community, the scene has thrived in recent years, becoming both a wellspring for new talent and a must-play date for any touring artist.
