The music from the TAGAP 3 Debut Gameplay Teaser Trailer, released July 30th 2013. This was actually a demo for an in-game song, which Petja then took and re-arranged for the teaser trailer. This trailer version obviously has a steeper progression curve, rising from something very mellow to rock-tastic, accompanied by "TAGAP Theme Song" melodies. Still, this is not 'the' theme for TAGAP 3, we're saving that one for the first full trailer :D

Spooky Halloween time!

Like the title says, it's the quirky, gothic style of Danny Elfman meets "Ghosts 'n Goblins". And what indeed would be a better fit for a level inspired by to the said "Ghosts 'n Goblins", as well as "Castlevania". Petja brought his tongue-in-cheek Elfman homage to life with Garritan Pocket Orchestra with astounding results.

At first the plan was to use the rock band from the ending to play all the jukebox songs. It worked okay... until this song; A rock band just didn't cut it. Since only one track with special instruments would've seemed out of place, the whole Jukebox was re-rigged with semi-appropriate instruments and performers.

The ending of TAGAP 2 expands the ideas introduced in the ending of the first TAGAP; It's no longer just a penguin party, but a full festival thing with our heroes literary taking the center stage. The music naturally had to reflect that and naturally the song "Pablo, Pedro & Pingu" returns, though in barely recognizable yet delightful funk form.

This is the full 'album version' of the song, while the track in the ending cinematic was re-arranged to fit scene.

And then the mutation happens. Like Primo's henchmen themselves, the videogame boss anthem transforms into something heavier, slower, rougher and borderline unstable. Intentionally dirty and garage-sounding, the general idea for the "Challenge the Mutant" was something along the lines "Challenge Him 2.0 like if it was from Metallica's St. Anger". With Hammond.

"Hawaii Mustache" is a direct result from watching an unhealthy dose of 80s TV series opening titles on YouTube. Like the name suggests, it's a more mellow homage to everything from "Magnum P.I." to "Miami Vice" - as heard through TAGAP earphones, naturally.

Since major portion of the third level has Pablo roaming seas via boat like something out of those iconic TV openings, "Hawaii Mustache" was a natural fit for it.

TAGAP 2 - Hawaii Mustache

"Run 'n Funk" ran and funked all around TAGAP 2 until it landed into "Beyond the Pipeline". It's sort of non-specific, all-round TAGAP-sounding song that was used in several levels before they got their own, specifically composed tracks. Fortunately the slot it ultimately landed on suits it well.

TAGAP 2 - Run 'n Funk

"Jungle" is, with its second half "Jungle on Fire", the first of the percussion-only in-game songs. Surprisingly it isn't as big a stylistic departure from the rest of the soundtrack as one might expect. Petja's background as a performing drummer shows, as "Jungle" delivers a clear theme via rhythm only and it really suits the tropic jungle.

The chiming piano intro is inspired by, you guessed it, "Baywatch" and it's there thanks to the lifeguard penguin jogging down the beach at the very beginning of the level. And hey, the beach is filled curvy chicks, so it fits.

TAGAP 2 - Jungle

When Pablo descends into section of the jungle consumed by volcanic fire, the song too transforms into something deeper and grittier. There is also some added distortion, which is fitting for both the mechanized walker robot operated by Pablo and the environment disintegrating into ashes around him.

TAGAP 2 - Jungle on Fire

This is the first half of the soundtrack for the penguin mental ward. The track originally wasn't meant to be two-parted, but the original version (the second half, "Creeping Insanity") just didn't work with the action-heavy level opening. First a completely new composition was tested out (that one ultimately became "Fight!"), but in order to keep continuity, Petja cooked up a rhythm-heavy electronic remix instead.

TAGAP 2 - Fighting Against Mental Disorder

The second of the two percussion-only songs is "Seven Little Miner Penguins", a powerful, tribal track with boomy soundscape emphasizing Pablo's descent into the secret mine hidden deep beneath Earth's crust. It does indeed sound as if a manic drummer was pounding away somewhere deeper in the mine tunnels, the sound echoing around the rock corridors.

TAGAP 2 - Seven Little Miner Penguins

The first half of the game concludes with a mini-boss round-up scenario. Majority of the level is an explosive encounter after another, all set in an industrial cargo lift with cold steel walls and the music had to be equally tough. So, the order of the day is manly hard-rock with steady, fist-waving rhythm.

TAGAP 2 - Elevator Music

When the level is essentially a hicktown in the middle of nowhere, there are two options for the soundtrack; pure country or bluesy boogie rock. Petja wisely went with the ZZ Top inspired boogie rock route and it fits, both in terms of music continuity and the level itself.

TAGAP 2 - Pablo's Ranch

The level "Under Construction" was, as a concept, there from the start and the song, too, was among the first to be composed. Heavy-duty construction yard as a setting evoking images of steel-dust covered manly manliness, "Testosterone Pills" is a perfect match, both as a song and in name.

TAGAP 2 - Testosterone Pills

"Kill Pill" is an odd beast; It's more melodic than anything else in TAGAP before, it's Petja's most complex and consummate funk yet - and most importantly, is altogether an awesome jam!

One of the last in-game songs to be composed, it actually wasn't meant for TAGAP 2 at all, but was Petja's experimentation of possible soundscapes of potential future Penguin DT projects. By mere coincidence, it shared characteristics with one of the last missing songs described in the to-do list and so it was assigned to TAGAP 2.

Yes, it's the Game Over melody, a gentle and intentionally poignant piano piece that is in sharp contrast to the rest of the soundtrack. The full working title for the song was "Worse Than a Dead Penguin is an Undead One".

TAGAP - Funky Penguin

TAGAP 2 Theme Song, composed and arranged by Penguin DT composer Petja Heiskanen.

One of the toughest things about soundtrack of a sequel is figuring out how to bring the title theme back, update it to reflect all the changes and still avoid changing it too much. So, since Pablo and Pedro are working together now, "TAGAP Theme Song" (theme of Pablo) is infused with "Challenge Him" (theme of Pedro). And then there is the rhythmic outro. At first it was just that, an outro and nothing more, but later it found a new life as the theme of Primo. Thus TAGAP 2 Theme Song" became to embody the essence of TAGAP 2; Pablo and Pedro fighting evil in the spotlights, while Primo lurks in the background pulling the strings!

Theme song is an essential part of every game, especially so in case of an old-school title like TAGAP. Knowing this we were very picky; This final rendition is the third candidate and the first we both were very happy with. It hooks the listener instantly with its irresistible melody and suits the cartoonish style of the game. And it still lives on in TAGAP2 and is destined to make a comeback in TAGAP3!

TAGAP - TAGAP Theme Song

This ultimate 'arcade boss anthem' is the theme of Pedro. It's just bloody perfect, starting with a bang and keeping the adrenaline flowing for the boss fight at hand. Later, in TAGAP 2, this anthem became more like a character theme, representing Pedro musically throughout the score AND the 'TAGAP 2 Theme Song'.

TAGAP - Challenge Him

The boss theme 'Challenge Him' was definitely one of the highlights of the original TAGAP soundtrack, but since it essentially is Pedro's theme, TAGAP 2 had to get a new boss anthem. Very similar in style, structure and intensity, 'Challenge Him 2.0' kicks in with a dose of familiarity despite the brand new melody.

But the familiarity is deceptive, as despite the almost identical beginning, the first boss fight quickly transforms into something else, both in gameplay and music.

TAGAP 2 - Challenge Him 2.0

Since the first level is both warm-up for things to come and the in-game tutorial, its music had to be more relaxed. While "Track One" is very much so, beneath the mellow first impression hides a slightly twisted heart and the recurring themes from the first game (songs 'Särkylääke' and 'Battle') work as a prelude to the second penguin apocalypse.

'Track One' was also, aptly enough, the debut song of TAGAP 2 soundtrack, released into the Internet wilderness on December 24th 2010.

TAGAP 2 - Track One

It was clear from start that TAGAP 2 would feature a sewer level and many ideas were bounced around about the sewer soundtrack. While the level itself pays homage to the most overused game cliche of all time, the music is the opposite; A song unique both in sound and in composition. And the contrast works, really driving the intentional cliche aspect home.

The sludge-sound of 'Hitting the Underground' was created by playing the entire song - rhythms, leads, bass-sounds - with an electric guitar. There actually aren't that many effects used here, just varying styles of guitar torture.
