THE ONLY REMEDY T0 PREVENT BRITAIN'S COLLAPSE

This sermon was preached following the arrest of Pastor John Sherwood in Uxbridge on 23rd April 2021 simply for upholding Biblical truth country to the fashions of the moment. These last words of teaching and counsel from our Lord in Luke 23:26-31, just before His crucifixion, are a warning of coming judgement. They are relevant to Pastor Sherwood's arrest, because Britain today is also a nation which has rejected the Lord Jesus Christ. The Saviour declares in these verses, I do not need your tears, for I remain in the Father's perfect will and am accomplishing His work of salvation. You should, however, weep for yourselves and for your children. These particular women of Jerusalem, who have chosen to engage in public mourning for Jesus, represent the people of the city, the religious establishment, and the people generally who have rejected the Messiah. They have rejected their true King in David's line and the One who would redeem them from their sins.

WEEP NOT FOR ME BUT WEEP FOR YOURSELVES (Luke 23 : 26-31)

There is coming a day of resurrection when men will hear Christ's voice, whether they want to or not. The dead are going to be called from their graves to render an account. There will be two types of resurrection, one to damnation and one to everlasting life. Our Lord clearly speaks of the day of resurrection as the time of universal judgement. The saved and the lost are going to be raised up on this same judgement day. 

Although believers in Christ are saved by grace alone, and can never earn their salvation, it is on the basis of their works, along with the rest of men, by which they will be judged. 

So there are two great questions : (1) Has the non-Christian prepared for this coming day by repenting fo sin and trusting in Christ? 2)Has the Christian used the saving grace bestowed upon him in order to lead a holy life in preparation for that coming day?

JOHN 5 : 27-30 THE DAY OF RESURRECTION IS THE DAY OF JUDGEMENT

As with Judah in Habakkuk’s day, most people in our contemporary society remain recklessly indifferent to the fact of coming judgement. Many are more concerned about offending the planet by the use of God-given fossil fuels than offending the God who controls the climate and the Judge of each one of us. 

Our task as Bible-believing Christians is to grieve over them, and to confront the sin and unbelief all around us. We must be watchers, earnestly praying that God will work in power; we must be weepers, deeply lamenting the national wickedness and longing that the lost might be saved, and we must be workers, doing all that we can to preach the Gospel of salvation, to bring sinners to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

2022 B.O.H. CONFERENCE - GRIEVING OVER OUR WICKED LAND

Becoming a Christian means separation from this world, and then to live out the Christian life means maintaining that separation. We have noted that the world has three particular characteristics with power to draw men away from God, and how we must be on our guard against all of these : 
"The lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, the pride of life".
So where do our real affections lie? Let us ensure that they are with the things of God, and not with the enticements of this world, because, as John teaches us here, the love of the world is completely incompatible with a real love for God. So may the Lord help us to "set our affection on things above, not on things on the earth" (Colossians 3:2).

WHY THE CHRISTIAN MUST BE SEPARATE FROM THIS WORLD (1 John 2 : 15-16)

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE HORROR OF THE CROSS FOR ALL THE WORLD (Matthew 27, v47 - 51)

The Lord Jesus Christ is fully God, manifested in the flesh. God the Father cannot be known except through the Son. That is what the Father has decreed. It is the Son who does the works of the Father, and He it is to whom all judgement has been committed. Only those who believe in the Son, being cleansed from their sin through His death on the Cross, will be raised up to everlasting life on the great last day. To deny God the Son is to deny God the Father.

JOHN 5:19-23 : THE INDISPENSABLE DOCTRINE OF THE DEITY OF CHRIST

There is a clear connection between a people’s obedience to God and the prosperity of their agriculture. A nation which honours God will experience abundant blessing upon its fields. This of course also applies to a nation’s general economic situation. In Jeremiah’s day the removal of the ability to enjoy the fruits of the land was the judgement of God upon a rebellious nation. As this precise moment in time, God is still mercifully blessing our country with plenty of food on our tables, but how we should pray that the nation might come to repentance, returning in all humility to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. If we today want to live in a land flowing with milk and honey, as opposed to a land coming more and more under God’s judgement, then there must be a great fleeing to Christ in repentance and faith - a seeking of God’s mercy, whilst there is still time.

THE POWER OF GOD OVER THE PRODUCE OF A NATION'S FIELDS (Numbers 14, v1 - 9)

This passage teaches us much about the non-believer’s wretched spiritual inadequacy. We observe here his failure to realise his spiritual need, his failure to listen to God's voice, his misplaced confidence in his own virtue, his unjustified constant demands for further evidence, before he will believe, his spiritual dullness and slowness to apprehend spiritual truth. The only way that the non-Christian can be rescued from this dangerous spiritual inadequacy is for him to acknowledge his spiritual hunger and thirst to come in repentance and faith to Him who is the bread of life, the Lord Jesus Christ, He who alone feed him so that he will live for evermore. 

These verses encapsulate the message which must be proclaimed to all non-believers today : Do not focus solely upon your bodily needs and earthly existence, upon “the meat which perisheth”, but rather come to Him who is the bread of life, who has the spiritual food that men might live, who has “the meat which endureth unto everlasting life”.

WHY YOU ARE IN DANGER WITHOUT FAITH IN CHRIST (Ezekiel 18:30)

We live in a hostile world, but God says, Do not despair at the fierceness of the opposition; do not be overcome by the wicked’s greater numbers. Remember that they will soon be cut down like the grass. Their prosperity is fleeting and without substance. Our responsibility is to remain faithful, even in the midst of persecution. Trust in the Lord, keep obedient, and you will “dwell in the land”, that is, you will remain as worthy citizens of God’s kingdom. All faithful Christians will be vindicated in the end.

CHRISTIAN, DESPAIR NOT AT THE FIERCENESS OF THE OPPOSITION (Psalm 37, v1-3)

All people are habitually sinners both by nature and practice, until they receive a new heart in the power of the Holy Spirit by coming in repentance and faith to the Lord Jesus Christ. So no one passing in the street could claim to be without sin. All therefore are guilty of having offended the God who is giving to them their daily breath. All should be deeply concerned about their spiritual condition, because their sin has separated them from the presence of the Holy God. It is quite possible to engage in much religious activity and duty, which frequently leads to pride, but never to deal with the root problem of a sinful heart, which only the new birth upon faith in the Lord Jesus Christ can remove.

ALL WITHOUT FAITH IN CHRIST ARE SPIRITUALLY DEAD AND SEPARATED FROM GOD (1 John 1:8)

Just before His crucifixion the Lord tells 11 of the 12 apostles (the other being a traitor) how they must abandon all thoughts of worldly exaltation and honour, and concentrate instaad on costly humble service. Then they will reap their reward. Our Lord Himself had to humble himself in conformity to His Father’s will, even to the point of laying down His life, before He was exalted. Likewise, the Christian’s calling is persevering sacrificial obedience in a world which hates Biblical truth and which is always seeking to oppose it. Those who thus persevere, and not just in fits and starts, will be gloriously rewarded. The Christian’s calling, therefore, is separation from this world and its praise, and instead costly service and perseverance in that service. After that will come a glorious reward. In other words, we are called to take up our cross and suffer with Christ, that we might subsequently receive an eternal crown. May the Lord give each one of us the grace so to do, persevering to the very end that we might obtain the heavenly reward.

A GOOD FRIDAY SERMON : No praise of men, only humble, costly service (Luke 22:21-30)

This sermon was preached the day after the Christian witness at the 2024 Manchester Pride parade. 

In this passage Jeremiah is foretelling the devastation which is going to come upon Judah as a result of her rebellion against God. Judah was ceasing to trust him for her national security, but instead was turning to alliances with other nations. Our nation today is living in rebellion against God and is seeking their security in this world, whereas the Gospel requires that they leave this world's sin and false philosophies. How tragic it is that men reject the gospel of Christ, which would give them a perfect security for all eternity. How they should learn to fear God, for "the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom". Through the Gospel our Lord is calling upon our nation to bear fruit for him. He is offering us the potential to be choice, productive vines. God is not willing that any should perish. He seeks only man’s eternal good. So our plea to all men today is, Stop ignoring your God. Come to Christ for mercy and eternal life. Stop being a degenerate plant and become a choice, fruit-bearing vine in which God delights.

BRITAIN GOES THE SAME WAY AS OLD TESTAMENT JUDAH (Jeremiah 2:15-22

What an exalted calling Timothy hasd as a pastor of God’s flock. Nevertheless, all believers in their respective secular callings carry on their work to the glory of God, and possess gifts for the nurturing and general well-being of the body of Christ. 

Both pastor and people must work together using their gifts, working out their own salvation in fear and trembling, and with the goal of seeing many others around them saved. 

The pastor must speak with authority, which the people must honour. He must be a teacher, and the people must be willing to learn. How he must take heed to himself and to his own holiness and walk with the Lord that he might be an example of holiness to the flock. 

What a powerful tool in the hands of the Lord is the pastor and his flock working together in love, straining every sinew that the lost might be saved.

HOW PASTOR AND PEOPLE MUST WORK TOGETHER TO MAKE THE GOSPEL KNOWN (1 Timothy 4:12-16)

This passage is teaching us that : 

1. The Jewish Christians had to consider the imminent destruction of Jerusalem.
2. We likewise must be mentally alert and on our guard because of imminent judgement.
3. We must be earnestly praying because of imminent judgement.
4. We must be fervently loving because of imminent judgement.  5. We must be fervently working within the body of Christ because of imminent judgement. 
5. Those who have followed Christ faithfully and suffered for His sake will be vindicated when He comes as Judge.

Then will He be able to say to the faithful believer, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21).

MENTALLY ALERT IN THE LIGHT OF IMMINENT JUDGEMENT (1 Peter 4:6-11)

The Lord Jesus Christ came and ministered to this world by means of water and by blood, to cleanse men by water, that is, by the Holy Spirit, and to shed His blood to pay the penalty for men's sins. Human beings preach the Gospel, but it is the Holy Spirit who speaks to the unbeliever's heart, drawing him or her to the Saviour. It is the Holy Spirit who shows to the sinner the centrality of the water and the blood of Christ, the centrality of the Spirit’s cleansing power and of the power of Christ’s blood to atone for the sions of the world. This threefold witness of the Spirit, the water and the blood is God’s witness to all people today.

It is to the greatness of the supreme Counsellor, the Lord Jesus Christ, to whom our nation must urgently turn today, because, as our text tells us, “Where no counsel is, the people fall" (Proverbs 11:14). This is why we must challenge governments and politicians with the truth of the Bible, as well as preaching salvation to the lost.

BRITAIN WILL FALL WITHOUT CHRIST'S WISE COUNSEL

This is an explanation of the Parable of the Lord of the Vineyard in Luke 20. It is delivered initially to the nation of Israel in our Lord's day, which had been given very special privileges : a unique revelation of God’s word down the centuries. However, these privileges had been horribly abused. Addressed in particular to the nation's leaders, the parable describes the leaders as wicked husbandmen of the vineyard which is Israel, having so often rejected and mistreated the prophets whom the Lord had sent to them. 

This tragic account, however, applies equally to nations which reject the Lord Jesus Christ TODAY, because God never changes. The Lord Jesus is the son and heir in the parable who is sent to Israel to receive the produce of the vineyard, namely the faith and obedience that are due to Him. If our own nation today carries on rejection the one true faith of Jesus Christ, He, the chief corner stone, will grind it to powder. 

The only solution therefore is that the citizens of our nation urgently examine their hearts and turn in repentance and faith to the only Saviour of sinners, the Lord Jesus Christ, whilst there is still time.


REJECTION OF THE CHRISTIAN FAITH LEADS TO NATIONAL DISASTER (Luke 20:9-19)

The spirit of antichrist is denying who Jesus Christ actually is, namely He who is both fully God and fully man. To deny that the Lord Jesus is “God manifest in the flesh” is no minor or merely academic matter. Even John in apostolic times had to deal those denying the Son of God’s true nature. In so doing, they were also denying God the Father. God’s truth is always under attack, and so today there are many antichrists denying who the Lord Jesus Christ really is. 

EVEN NOW ARE THERE MANY ANTICHRISTS (1 John 2:18-23)

Whilst Solomon focuses in this passage upon breaking the 7th commandment, we must constantly be on our guard against the onset of all sin, diligently seeking to know God’s will in every situation. We have seen what utter havoc adultery wreaked in the life of Solomon’s father, David, and that David fell having been a believer for many years. “Let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall”. So we must guard the knowledge of God’s word in our hearts as our most precious possession to enable us not to sin. His commandments must be diligently kept before our minds. How invaluable this will be, when temptation assaults. “Keep my commandments … Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart”. Let us ensure that we walk circumspectly, understanding what the will of the Lord is .

HOW DO WE AVOID SIN? BY KEEPING GOD'S WORD EVER BEFORE US (Proverbs 6, v30 to 7, v9)

The message of these verses is that the believer in Christ is sustained by a glorious hope. He is sustained “in the midst of trials by the prospect of the future deliverance and inheritance of the sons of God” . The sons of God currently suffer, but they will be manifested to all the world and publicly vindicated in great glory. The sons of God, by the indwelling Spirit, experience a measure of liberation already in this life, but they also possess the glorious hope of complete liberation at the resurrection. Yes, we labour and suffer in this vain and fallen world, but let us remember that “the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us”.

How do we respond to serious epidemics as Christians? What is God saying though this national and global calamity?

CORONAVIRUS - THE BIBLICAL RESPONSE (Psalm 91, v1 - 10)

The ark of the covenant in the Holy of Holies speaks to us of God making Himself present amongst sinners, as He appears in their midst accompanied by the cherubim and above the mercy seat or place of propitiation. It is only through the shed of blood of Christ, satisfying God’s justice, that any fallen son of Adam can have fellowship with God. 

The table of shewbread positioned in the Holy Place teaches us that the believer, having been forgiven and saved through Christ’ shed blood, must then continually present before God’s face the fruit of his labour, the pure loaves of his service. We are saved through Christ’s sacrificial death in order then to present our bodies to Him as a living sacrifice.

Exodus 25, v10-30 : THE SPIRITUAL TRUTHS REVEALED IN THE ARK AND THE TABLE OF SHEWBREAD

Although we, as Christian believers today, possess the truth, let us never abandon a gentleness of spirit and a deep humility of heart, so that we are then better equipped to help those who are afflicted, and who, unbeknown to us, may be viciously assailed by Satan himself. As our Lord warned, “Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees” (Mark 8:15). Knowing the truth is no excuse for a harsh and ungentle spirit. May the Lord keep us humble, so that we can then better help our Christian brother who is in need.

KNOWING THE TRUTH IS NO EXCUSE FOR A LACK OF GENTLENESS (Job 4, v1-21)
