"We shall all stand before the judgement seat of Christ". All are answerable to Christ as Judge, whatever their religion or none.

Open Air preaching in Slough 18-5-21 (Romans 14:10-12)

The Christian’s everyday life is under God’s protecting hand of God, watching over our material needs and physical safety. The believer who pursues holiness will not experience the earthly judgements upon sin, to which the unbeliever is so prone. He will rather enjoy an earthly security and peace of mind of which the world knows nothing. His times are in God’s hands, and he has the privilege of God Himself communicating with him.

CHRISTIAN'S PRIVILEGE OF SECURITY AND PEACE OF MIND (Proverbs 3 : 23 - 26)

A false gospel focusing only on God's love is often preached, but non-Christians need to be told about their guilt under God's law before they can ever appreciate their need of a Saviour.

2013 BRITAIN'S ONLY HOPE CONFERENCE - THE PLACE OF GOD'S LAW IN GOSPEL PREACHING

There is coming a day of resurrection when men will hear Christ's voice, whether they want to or not. The dead are going to be called from their graves to render an account. There will be two types of resurrection, one to damnation and one to everlasting life. Our Lord clearly speaks of the day of resurrection as the time of universal judgement. The saved and the lost are going to be raised up on this same judgement day. 

Although believers in Christ are saved by grace alone, and can never earn their salvation, it is on the basis of their works, along with the rest of men, by which they will be judged. 

So there are two great questions : (1) Has the non-Christian prepared for this coming day by repenting fo sin and trusting in Christ? 2)Has the Christian used the saving grace bestowed upon him in order to lead a holy life in preparation for that coming day?

JOHN 5 : 27-30 THE DAY OF RESURRECTION IS THE DAY OF JUDGEMENT

The apostle Paul visits the city of Athens, which was was the central focal point of Greek culture. Even though now politically weak, and under Roman sovereignty, it was the intellectual home of the empire and of the Gentile world generally. As Paul looks around Athens, he is deeply agitated by the abounding influence of false religion in the city. Temples and idols were everywhere. 

We are then told in Acts 17:17, “Therefore disputed he ... in the market daily with them that met with him”. So in the places of public gathering he disputes and reasons with those who adhered to Greek religion and to the different schools of philosophy, including the Epicureans and the Stoics.

We learn from how Paul conducted himself in how the Gospel should be preached today. The following points are important :

1) Paul preached on Christ - His death and resurrection; 
2)Paul preached on God as the Creator and Sustainer of all life; 
3)Paul denounced religious error (this in no way implies hostility or discourtesy); 
4)Paul commanded his hearers to repent, because the Day of Judgement is coming, and it is the risen Christ  who is the Judge of all men.

THE APOSTOLIC METHOD OF PROCLAIMING CHRISTIAN TRUTH (Acts 17:16-34)

An empty and worthless Christian profession is a tragic but very real phenomenon. The essential marks of being a real Christian are : 
1) Separation from this world’s philosophies 
2) The circumcision of the heart
3) Holiness off life
4) Serving Christ without any guile

Pastor Peter Simpson's sermon at the 2022 BRITAIN'S ONLY HOPE CONFERENCE on Habakkuk 1:1-6. As with Judah in Habakkuk’s day, most people in our contemporary society remain recklessly indifferent to the fact of coming judgement. Many are more concerned about offending the planet by the use of God-given fossil fuels than offending the God who controls the climate and the Judge of each one of us. 

Our task as Bible-believing Christians is to grieve over them, and to confront the sin and unbelief all around us. We must be watchers, earnestly praying that God will work in power; we must be weepers, deeply lamenting the national wickedness and longing that the lost might be saved, and we must be workers, doing all that we can to preach the Gospel of salvation, to bring sinners to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE HORROR OF THE CROSS FOR ALL THE WORLD (Matthew 27, v47 - 51)

Those who use their tongue in a malicious manner towards others are defying God’s commandment that we should love our neighbour as ourselves. 

Nasty and slanderous words in fact reflect a heart alienated from God. Those who can willingly use malicious, and hateful words are actually of the same spirit as those who commit murder. That is how serious tongue-sins are. 

God's commandments address our heart's inward disposition, not just our outward deeds. He who is of a faithful to the Lord will always think before he speaks. His speech will reflect the desire in his heart to keep all God's commandments. His speech will be productive of good, and glorifying to God, a sign that he truly is born again. He who controls his tongue will also be proficient at dealing with all other sin in his life.

Hebrews 3:11 - “Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest".  The Hebrew believers are under great pressure from their fellow Jews to renounce their faith, and so they are being warned that they are in danger of coming short of the gospel rest. They are being warned that if they return to Judaism, they cannot be saved from their sins. To embrace the gospel and to follow Christ is the most significant act that a man will ever carry out. If the Hebrews renounce Christ, they will be like the Israelites who fell in the wilderness and who never reached the land. So near, yet so far. They must not make the same tragic mistake. They must labour to enter into the gospel rest which the Lord Jesus has worked to provide for them. To enter into this rest is hard and costly. It will involve much opposition. The word ‘labour’ means to hurry, to be bent upon, to endeavour earnestly, to strive. This is the terminology of Christian conversion. It is not some casual lifestyle choice.

STRAINING EVERY SINEW TO ENTER INTO CHRIST'S REST (Hebrews 4:8-11)

In this passage we see the eternal Son of God at work in the Old Testament period. He confronts Balaam, the false prophet, in his evil purpose. This account teaches us four vital truths about the non-Christian’s dangerous condition. 
1. He does not understand God’s unchanging nature, His absolute power, and man’s utter weakness before Him. 
2. He does not understand that he is spiritually blind, that his heart is corrupt, and that he lacks true wisdom. 
3. He hardens his heart against God’s gracious drawing. He rejects God’s speaking, because he stubbornly prefers his sins. 
4. He gets offended and even angry, when Christ stands in his way, and confronts him with his sin. 
Out of love for our non-Christian neighbour, we warn him today, as he happily lives in rejection of the Lord Jesus Christ, Be aware that He stands in your sinful path, as He once did before Balaam, and His sword is drawn. Bow down quickly before Him, or else you will be eternally lost.

THE SON OF GOD STOPS THE SINNER IN HIS TRACKS (Numbers 22:22-31)

Two key figures of the English Reformation in the 16th century were the gifted preachers, Thomas Bilney and Hugh Latimer, who were both burnt at the stake for upholding the truths of Scripture. Much can be learnt from their ministries which is of great relevance to our own situation today.

VALIANT FAITH : LIFE AND WITNESS OF BILNEY AND LATIMER, MARTYRS FOR BIBLICAL TRUTH

All people are fallen creatures, having the status of being ‘simple’, gullible and labouring under satanic deception. The non-believer, because of his fallen condition, is utterly unqualified to make judgements about the things of God. He must first humble himself and realise that he has no wisdom of his own. He must stop resisting the work of the Holy Spirit applying the word of God to his heart. This word gives men instruction, removing their gullible and deceived mindset. Becoming a Christian is to separate oneself totally from the world’s attitudes and philosophies. 

Having come to Christ for true wisdom, believers must then constantly be applying their minds to knowing God’s word, because the world, the whole anti-Christian world system, is continually trying to re-educate us into its own way of thinking. Solomon is writing the book of Proverbs "to give subtilty to the simple”, that is, to lead those who have been deceived into God’s truth. Indeed, this is why the whole of the Bible has been given to us by God, to remove the darkness and ignorance of all people, before they come to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

THE WORLD IS TRYING TO RE-EDUCATE YOU - DEFEND YOURSELF WITH THE WORD OF GOD (Proverbs 1, v3 - 4)

The Old Testament Temple was the place of mediation between man and God, and as such it foreshadows the Lord Jesus Christ, the only Mediator between the holy God and sinners. So Christ is the true temple - God dwelling with men, which is the meaning of His name Emmanuel (see Matthew 1:23). When the Israelites turned towards the Temple to pray, it was towards the one place where atonement for sin could be made. Likewise, when we pray today, it must be through Christ alone, who shed His blood to atone for sin.

The Temple was also the place where the Israelites came before God for arbitration and final judgement. Likewise the Lord Jesus Christ is the supreme Judge of all. He alone alone knows the hearts of men. As the apostle Paul tell us, “We must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:10). 

The great privilege of those who turn from sin and trust in Christ is to have God dwelling within them by the Holy Spirit, who is the Spirit of Christ. As the Lord Jesus told His disciples, “I will not leave you comfortless. I will come to you … Ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you” (John 14:18,20).

HOW SOLOMON'S TEMPLE FORESHADOWS THE PERSON AND WORK OF CHRIST (1 Kings 8, v28-32)

Paul exhorts the believers to stand fast in the Lord. The Christian should be labouring with the saints for the advancement of Christ's kingdom : he should be a true yoke-bearer and true yoke-fellow. He rejoices in God's providential care of him and he continues steadfastly in prayer, for prayer leads to peace of mind. He endeavours to moderate and control his conduct to the glory of God. He must persevere in faith and service to the very end, by rejoicing in God's providential care, by showing to the world his Spirit-filled restraint and moderation of conduct, and by continuing steadfast in prayer. May God help us each one of us to stand fast in the Lord by practical holiness, persevering service, continual rejoicing, and steadfast prayer. So let us take away 4 words from these verses : HOLINESS, PERSEVERANCE, REJOICING, PRAYER, and may we practise all of these right up to the very end.

HOW THE CHRISTIAN STAYS ENCOURAGED : HOLINESS, PERSEVERANCE, REJOICING, PRAYER (Philippians 4:1-7)

Just before His crucifixion the Lord tells 11 of the 12 apostles (the other being a traitor) how they must abandon all thoughts of worldly exaltation and honour, and concentrate instaad on costly humble service. Then they will reap their reward. Our Lord Himself had to humble himself in conformity to His Father’s will, even to the point of laying down His life, before He was exalted. Likewise, the Christian’s calling is persevering sacrificial obedience in a world which hates Biblical truth and which is always seeking to oppose it. Those who thus persevere, and not just in fits and starts, will be gloriously rewarded. The Christian’s calling, therefore, is separation from this world and its praise, and instead costly service and perseverance in that service. After that will come a glorious reward. In other words, we are called to take up our cross and suffer with Christ, that we might subsequently receive an eternal crown. May the Lord give each one of us the grace so to do, persevering to the very end that we might obtain the heavenly reward.

A GOOD FRIDAY SERMON : No praise of men, only humble, costly service (Luke 22:21-30)

Psalm 106:23 “Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach, to turn away his wrath”. 

We see in these words the essence of the Christian Gospel. God in His mercy provides a remedy for man’s rebellion in the person of a Mediator, He who is foreshadowed by Moses, the Lord Jesus Christ. 

“(GOD) will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all” (1 Timothy 2:4–6). 

“If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous” (1 John 2:1).

Christ is the true Moses who stands in the breach to intercede for sinners, if only they will repent and come to Him. He is the only One who can turn away God’s wrath. Non-believers must cease from hardening their hearts. They must turn from their sin and come to Christ, God’s appointed Mediator, without further delay.

CHRIST IS THE TRUE MOSES WHO STANDS IN THE BREACH ON BEHALF OF SINNERS (Psalm 106:6-15)

SUBMIT TO THE GOD WHO SEARCHES YOUR HEART(Jeremiah 17:9)

4 vital gospel principles are set forth here as the Lord gives to Ezekiel the blueprint for the Temple which must be built upon the people’s return from captivity in Babylon. 
  
1 : What a privilege for the sinner to enter into God’s presence.
2 : However, the way into God’s presence is guarded. Certain conditions must be met - repentance from sin and faith in the Saviour who shed His blood.
3 : Having been saved and brought into God’s presence, the believer has great potential to be fruitful and flourishing in holiness and service.  
4 : How central to the Christian gospel is the shedding of Christ’s blood. We must tell all around us today that if they if they will ever into God’s presence it can only be through Christ’s shed blood whereby those who believe in Him are cleansed from the guilt of their sins.

PRECIOUS GOSPEL TRUTH IN EZEKIEL'S TEMPLE BLUEPRINT (Ezekiel 40, v35-43)

What is the heart of Christian message? In a nutshell, what is the gospel all about? Are most people basically good people? What is the nature of man really like? Pastor Peter Simpson answers these questions as he preaches the gospel in Slough High Street in May 2024.

REPENT AND BE CONVERTED (open air preaching Slough May 2024)

This passage in Jeremiah chapter 7 describes the nation of Judah’s love affair with false religion. The people were “walking after other gods to their hurt” (verse 7). The very nation in all the world which had received so much direct revelation from the one true God came to embrace the false gods of the surrounding nations as well, but all false religion is actually satanic in origin. This is why attempts to fuse together the different faiths of the world must be rejected. False religion actually brings down God’s anger upon a nation, for He will share His glory with none other. 

The contemporary creed of ‘embracing diversity’ demands that all religions be treated as equally valid and beneficial, but God’s word tells us concerning the need to follow the Lord Jesus Christ alone, “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).

WHEN GOVERNMENTS IGNORE GOD’S LAWS, THEY PLACE THE WHOLE NATION IN PERIL (Jeremiah 7:16-20)

We have in the first two verses of the Book of Proverbs the purpose of Solomon in writing it. Solomon of course prophetically foreshadows the Lord Jesus Christ, so we in fact have here a statement about the great wisdom of Him who is infinitely greater than Solomon, namely the Lord Jesus Christ. The apostle Paul tells us that "in Christ are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:2-3). 

Yet, tragically, Christ's words are rejected by many, including those who are influential and held in high esteem in society, for they follow this world’s wisdom, which is foolishness with God. The wise words of Christ are recorded for us throughout Scripture, for all the Bible is inspired by His Spirit. We thus have in Scripture a glorious depository of all the wisdom which God will ever require of mankind to know. We should therefore be longing to know more and more of Christ’s words. Every word of the Bible is Christ speaking to the world, and in Him alone will men ever discover true wisdom.

ONLY THE WORDS OF CHRST CAN MAKE MEN TRULY WISE (Proverbs 1:1-2)

The symbolism of the two witnesses represents the apostolic preaching of Jesus Christ as the true Messiah. The apostles were called to pronounce judgment upon Jerusalem and upon all the people who had wilfully rejected their Messiah. The first Christians faced enormous hostility, but the enemies of the gospel could not suppress Christ’s truth, even by killing the preachers. Their rejoicing over the death of the two witnesses as recorded in Revelation 11 would be very shortlived. Jerusalem and the Temple would fall. The disciples of Christ will be vindicated, and not least the valiant band of murdered gospel preachers. The once holy city and its Temple will be utterly obliterated, but the true spiritual temple and the true Israel will rise up in its place - the assembly of those, both Jew and Gentile, who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.

ROMAN EMPIRE  & FALSE RELIGION TRY TO DESTROY CHRIST'S CHURCH, BUT CANNOT (Revelation 11:10-12)

If a man does not take holiness seriously, he is no true disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ.

THE CHRISTIAN'S HIGH CALLING : BE AS HOLY AS GOD IS HOLY (Proverbs 2:20-22)

Verse 6 of this passage reads : “In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes”. This verse encapsulates the great spiritual malaise within the nation in the time of the Judges. There had been a departure from the plainly stated principles of God’s word. Likewise today, what havoc is wrought when churches abandon the authority of the Bible : the result is that all society begins to flounder in darkness.

Judges 17:1-13 - THE DANGERS WHEN CHURCH AND SOCIETY DEPART FROM GOD'S WORD

Balaam is an Old Testament example of false belief. He acknowledges the existence of the God of Israel, and he even believes in His great power. He is a believer of sorts, but this does not make him a true man of God, one who has turned from his sin, and who has been saved from his sin. In Balaam we see a very religious man, but one who also follows false gods. We see a man who who has been exposed to the power of the one true God, and yet he stills loves this world, and does not properly humble himself before the Lord. He is a false believer who is under the wrath of God.

Numbers 22:1 - 21 THE DANGER OF A FALSE CHRISTIAN PROFESSI0N

The ark of the covenant in the Holy of Holies speaks to us of God making Himself present amongst sinners, as He appears in their midst accompanied by the cherubim and above the mercy seat or place of propitiation. It is only through the shed of blood of Christ, satisfying God’s justice, that any fallen son of Adam can have fellowship with God. 

The table of shewbread positioned in the Holy Place teaches us that the believer, having been forgiven and saved through Christ’ shed blood, must then continually present before God’s face the fruit of his labour, the pure loaves of his service. We are saved through Christ’s sacrificial death in order then to present our bodies to Him as a living sacrifice.

Exodus 25, v10-30 : THE SPIRITUAL TRUTHS REVEALED IN THE ARK AND THE TABLE OF SHEWBREAD

Let us rejoice in this our privilege of being sealed by God and being protected from the terrible fiery condemnation which sinners deserve. Let us rejoice in our belonging, not to an earthly city, which was soon to be destroyed, but to a heavenly city, the heavenly Jerusalem.

SEALED BY GOD AND CITIZEN OF THE HEAVENLY JERUSALEM - Revelation 7 : 1 - 17
