Hemmed OUT – by peoplelikeusdj

Most of us in our everyday life find ourselves hemmed in.  Hemmed in by expectations of friends and family, hemmed in by societal norms and traditions, where the consequences of stepping outside of these hemmed in boundaries seem too unsure to try something different.

As with the sharing of music, especially in clubs, there seems to be a prevalence of “playing it safe” hemmed in by the perceived expectations of the dancefloor to feed them wall to wall bangers, keeping the energy high in fear of losing the dancefloor.  The smoking area is now an additional foe in this battle for attention – the increasing short attention of this smartphone generation we all find ourselves victims of in some way or another.

As a result, rarely am I taken by surprise by a DJ in a club setting – once the first few records are played through the Soundsystem we tend to know what to expect for the next few hours, what sounds, what tempo and what we will be made or invited to feel.  

Hemmed in by bpm, genre, and the requirement to please the dancers.  Of course, this can be lots of fun for all involved but at the end of a club DJ set, I’m often left feeling like there was something missing…

This hemmed OUT series of shows for Mutant Radio looks to begin to explore different dancefloor possibilities, to begin to unpick, unstitch the lines of dancefloor expectations that have been sewn…

…to invite the dancefloor to moments of wonky undefined genre sounds, to explore what this does to our bodies, ambient moments that are sometimes serene, euphoric, peaceful that can also be read with dark undertones – moments that make you want to lie prostrate or curl up in a ball…moments before or after dancing frenetic to sounds that call for this.  

hemmed OUT looks to play with tempo, pitch, volume, and multiple layering and invites you to come on this journey, let your ears, your minds and bodies be hemmed OUT…just for a moment.

For those interested: the mix was recorded in one-take, at 2am when very tired…a conscious stream with no more planning than putting a bag/folder together containing the sound pallets I wanted to maybe include.  Playing off 2 x CDJ2000NXS (linked) with 1 x Technics mk2, all linked into a Mastersounds Radius Valve DJ mixer.
