He's the co-author of the popular self-help book, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy [ACT for dummies] and also the author of several peer reviewed articles on the subject of ACT and contextual behavioural science. Ducan's work focuses on whole school and targeted interventions to promote and improve children's wellbeing and resilience as well as on the delivery of group and individually based ACT coaching interventions to support teachers' well-being and valued living.

This episode a new type of episode - one aimed more at those who are workplace trainers or facilitators support adults in the development of new skills. It’s a short cup/a/soup called Helping. Equally, it could be useful for anyone contemplating the helping relationship.

Have you ever had the misfortune to fall over in public or witness somebody else taking a tumble.

It’s yes to both of those scenarios for me and in my experience - there’s a common theme which relates to the helping relationship. It's inspired by one of my cycling adventures, the work of Edgar Schein and a reflection from my friend and colleague, Rich Bennett.

I’m delighted to be back to share part two of my chat with Dr Richard Bennett and Dr Joe Oliver - both clinical psychologists - both legends in their field- they joined me on the show to talk about self-esteem at work. We began by unpacking the concept that’s so popular and Rich and Joe draw upon the evidence to illustrate how self esteem can be quite a narrow and restrictive concept. People might say - "I’ve got high self esteem" or "I’ve got low self esteem" and it can feel quite rigid and inflexible. It can limit our behaviour and impact our whole career and or life. The chaps present their alternative perspective of self-acceptance - which effectively captures the nuanced and multifaceted experience of being a human. 

Their approach has is set out in their book -  The Mindfulness and Acceptance Workbook for Self-Esteem: Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to Move Beyond Negative Self-Talk and Embrace Self-Compassion 

And in this episode - there’s a treasure trove of insights and a tremendously generous take away.

NOW - those with heightened noticing skills - may have spotted the gap between part one and part two being released. I’d like to thank everyone for their patience - fortunately I’m fully confident that your patience is about to be rewarded. 

The delay was a function of life - I’ve been working flat out on a mega project since March - designing and delivering coaching skills masterclasses to senior leaders in a global drinks company - needless to say - this has involved a heft dose of contextual behavioural science which has gone down a storm. It’s also involved a lot of European travel. Coupled with that - we moved house in May - and we couldn’t be happier with our new home - near Seville. It’s just been a tad busy and I’ve felt a bit exhausted and - to use a Spanish word - a la deriva - which means adrift. I now growing roots and feeling established and plans are gently afoot for new guests and topics.

I was reflecting on the approach of Rich and Joe in last week's episode to self-esteem, and my mind went back to an interview I had whilst I was still in the Civil Service, over 10 years ago. It was for a senior role and it was, without a doubt - the worst interview I’ve ever had, cringworthy, terrifying, embarrassing and humiliating. I’ll tell you all about it this episode.

Why the hell am I sharing this - When I’d much rather just keep avoiding this memory.

We can spend a lot of time on autopilot - research by 2 Harvard University Psychologist found that we can spend about 47% of our waking hours thinking about something other than what we’re doing, and this mind-wandering typically makes us unhappy (Killingsworth & Gilbert, 2010)

Here I present some of my own research based on interviews with senior public sector leaders. In my research I explored the ways in which they fulfilled their leadership roles and experienced organisational politics - all through the lens of psychological flexibility.

Psychological flexibility is something that Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) aims to strengthen. It's made up of six processes. In this podcast I represent those processes with the triflex.

Welcome to Season 3 Episode 1. It's the first part of my conversation with Dr Guy Meadows - co-founder and clinical director of The Sleep School.

We hear about Guy's background in sleep research and insomnia and what led to the formation of The Sleep School. It's fascinating to hear the series of events that began in the sleep laboratories of Imperial College. There's a glimpse into some of their research and an insight into the behavioural science behind The Sleep School.

Guy noticed that "the more people struggle to get to sleep the more awake they became".  Once he discovered Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), everything began to slot together.

The conversation continues with a focus on how to introduce the concept of skilfully relating to the content that our minds can produce, which is also known as cognitive defusion. We also how Jaimie uses her experience of the context of the ballet world in a way that is both curious  and cautious - she's keen not to make assumptions based upon her own experience. Paul reflects on the embodied nature of the new protocol, many people we train report feeling quite disconnected with sensations in their body. He also reveals how the Flaxman Manoeuvre was born. This week – it’s a cuppa soup. A short episode – the lighthouse – it combines a poem I learned at school with a reflection on how we can keep sight of the things that give us meaning in our working lives. We call these qualities that give us meaning, our personal values. It can be difficult, scary and revealing to consider what gives us purpose in our work. To use these qualities as a guide for our behaviour & decisions can be challenging too. I consider my lighthouse – to be beaming out my personal values – when the sea is calm I can see the lamplight but in turbulent times they can disappear.

It's Part 2 of my conversation with Suzanne Tarrant who is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Head of Staff Psychological Wellbeing at the Hywel Dda University Health Board.

We focus on the green health agenda and begin by talking about the culture of taking breaks in the NHS. SPOILER ALERT: breaks are not necessarily seen as a typical part of a day in many NHS roles. 

Suzanne has always valued her connection with nature and describes herself as someone who always retreats to the sea when in need of solace. In her role in Hywel Dda, Suzanne has secured approval from the Executive Board to develop a strategic framework for green health that is truly supportive of health and well-being. They have also established a green health network as well as a green health group at one of their district hospitals, where staff from across the site are developing a courtyard garden with support from community groups.

We also talk about Suzanne's growing involvement with Reconnect in Nature where they are developing a long weekend nature packages - in the first instance, for Doctors. The aim is to provide the opportunity to start to recharge and recover whilst also developing perspectives and tools that can be taken back into the workplace and be woven in to their working lives.

To finish - there is a second takeaway from Suzanne about how we can build our relationship with nature in our own unique way as well as making it a reciprocal connection.

This is a special edition – a hearty soup for you to enjoy – It’s my interview with Dr Becky Quicke – a clinical psychologist who specialises in  supporting women through the perimenopause and menopause – particularly around the associated anxiety – she uses Acceptance and Commitment therapy as an essential part of her approach.

Becky empowers women who experience anxiety during the menopause to slow down, let go of worries and live with more joy and ease. Her on line courses teach psychological flexibility and compassion skills so women can navigate this transitional phase of life with confidence, care and clarity. In addition, she helps women practice menstrual cycle awareness during perimenopause (the phase 5-10 years before menopause) so they can consciously pave the way towards a more emotionally empowered menopause. It’s a time for women to unravel and by teaching women these skills, Becky guides them back to their own innate wisdom and power so they can thrive in life and go from fear to fulfilment.

P-Soupers - it's the second part of our festive special and have I got a treat for you. Have a listen to my conversation with Dr Dayna Lee-Baggley. Dayna is a Registered Clinical Psychologist. She holds an Assistant Professor appointment in the Department of Family Medicine and cross-appointments in the Department of Surgery and the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at Dalhousie University and an Adjunct Professor appointment in the Department of Industrial and Organizational Psychology at Saint Mary’s University. Dayna also works as a Clinical Health Psychologist at the Nova Scotia Health Authority (CentralZone) for the Multi Organ Transplant Program and as a Trainer and Researcher of the Behaviour Change Institute.

Listen on as we hear about the time when Dayna discovered Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and how she applied it in her own life. Dayna also has some great advice for those of us considering behaviour change in the new year, spoiler alert, a lot of those goals we set are actually outcomes. She also busts the myth about the time it takes to form a habit and explains the difference between our cave dweller mind and our frontal lobe. This is the reason that our healthy habits can fall away at holiday time because we're using our frontal lobe too much and our cave dweller mind can just step in and take over when we’re surrounded by a family sized tin quality street and crisps.

This episode is packed with top tips and insights from Dayna's work. Dayna has great skill in translating research knowledge into things that people can do in their day to day lives to reduce suffering and increase joy.

On Friday I had the great opportunity to visit the University of Chichester and speak to some of their Masters Students about ACT in the workplace and coaching. I was invited by Ian Tyndall, who is a cognitive behavioural psychologist and senior lecturer there, as well as running the Functional Behavioural Science Laboratory. 

Of course I was keen to grab Ian as a guest and the conversation was fabulous. He's such a warm and generous man and can tell a story like no other. Listen on to hear more about:

 * why he would have never predicted a career which involved speaking in public, something that he now loves,
 * his exploration of how language impacts anxiety and our response to stressful events,

This is a check in with our previous guest, behaviour change expert, Registered Clinical Psychologist and author, Dr Dayna Lee-Baggley.

Here's part 2 of my conversation with Dr Annie Gascoyne. In part one we heard about Annie’s fascinating career history, how she’s worked in radically different organisations and she talked about pivotal moments, like going back to Uni and how she found herself in the surprising position of embarking upon a PhD.

In this episode we’re diving into that same PhD research - you’ll hear Annie introduce and expand on organisational flexibility as a concept and its component processes – which I think is highly relevant in these extraordinary times. I think you’ll find that organisational flexibility provides a useful and practical lens to consider the challenges that all organisations face.

Dr Annie Gascoyne - Part 2

It was great to welcome Shane to People Soup. Blimey what an interesting fella.

He's currently a lecturer at Liverpool John Moores University after completing his PhD at the University of Chichester.

Shane's interested in exploring the potential in merging the fields of behavioural analysis and differential psychology. He really set me thinking about a whole host of organisational issues and my stance in the workplace.

Other topics we discussed include Shane’s experience of imposter syndrome, his preparedness to be wrong  - spoiler alert – Shane says he’s been wrong about things many times. We also chatter about his willingness to share ideas with psychological communities outside of his own immediate discipline and his view of the primary function of a good scientist.

He also talks a little about his research on the impact of SMART training – which we’ll delve into more in part 2.

We finish with a tale of his sporting prowess which may or may not give us clues to his stance as a researcher.

This conversation was such a pleasure – Shane is open, honest, thought provoking and humble as well as being great fun.

He's been using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) with children and young people who have long-term health conditions, and their families. This work has also extended beyond individuals and families to using ACT in multidisciplinary clinics, with teams and on hospital wards.
