La Musica Cubana-Only Percussion-All Percussions are played by Pepe Espinosa

Sóngo is the name of a particular genre of Popular Cuban Music, created by the group "Los Van Van" in the early 1970's. Sóngo incorporated rhythmic elements from folkloric rumba into popular Dance Music, and was a significant departure from the Són Montuno/Mambo-based structure which had dominated Popular Music on the island since the 1940's. Blas Egües was the first drummer in Los Van Van, but it was the band's second drummer, José Luis Quintana "Changuito," who developed Sóngo into the world-wide phenomena it is today.
Sóngo is the most famous of the post-Revolution Cuban Rhythms, beginning with the Mozambique, which drew from the deep well of Afro-Cuban Folkloric Rhythms (mainly Rumba). During the 1970's, many Cuban bands created their own original rhythms: Los Van Van invented Sóngo; Orquesta Ritmo Oriental—Nueva Onda; Orquesta Típica Juventud—bata cinco, and Orquesta Revé named their invention—Changüí, after the "funky," folkloric proto-son music of the nineteenth century.

El Sóngo es un Ritmo Afrocubano derivado del Són, elaborado a partir de los años setenta dentro de la orquesta "Los Van Van" de Juan Formell. Su paternidad se atribuye generalmente al Percusionista y Baterista José Luis Quintana, alias "Changuito".
El Sóngo es esencialmente un ritmo aunque algunos tienden a considerarlo un género pues permite la inclusión de otros estilos contemporáneos no latinos como el Jazz y/o el Funk. Fue desarrollado en La Habana por Percusionistas y Bandas como la de Juan Formell y "Los Van Van", la Ritmo Oriental, Los Latinos, Los Reyes 73, Grupo Irakére y otros. El Sóngo es el Ritmo derivado del Són y es antecesor a la timba o "Salsa Cubana", una especie de Salsa-Són, pero con un timbre netamente Cubano.

In this part of the song ( Verse ) we use the "Són Cubano"tumbao with Sóngo accents, the tumbao (on congas) is slightly more syncopated. The Timbales plays "Cáscara" along with Rumba Clave on Jam Block.

Sóngo Full Montuno # 3

Here a Timbale Solo with Sóngo/Full Montuno to give way to the last part of the Montuno, Congas & Bongó Cowbell play a stable rythm section during the Timbale Solo, is very important to keep a stable tumbao thus achieved a single clean section, and so the soloist can have a good solid base to develop its work improvisation. Also is good ( very important ) to think that the dancer needs to have a stable rythm so in that way he can dance with a high rythmic comfort.

Aca un solo de Timbal en Full Sóngo Montuno para dar paso al Montuno final,Las Congas y la Campana de Bongó tocan un ritmo bien estable durante el solo de Timbal, es muy importante mantener bien estable ( sin sacar las manos ) el tumbao de Las Congas y la Campana de Bongó en esta parte ya que de esta forma se logra una seccion de solo limpia y asi el solista puede tener una base bien sólida para desarrollar sus ideas,tambien es bueno ( muy importante ) pensar que el bailador necesita tener un ritmo estable tambien para marcar sus pasillos durante el solo.

Born in Havana (Cuba) in 1974 began my musical studies at age 4 years with my Great father Pepin Drum,and then move on to study at the Conservatory of Music in Havana Adolfo Guzman. Already at the age of 12 years started my first experience with the fame Saratoga Joint Bongosero as what the strength and understanding to launch my career. I am an admirer of Cuban Traditional Music in all its extension, since the child used to listen and learn from the masters of our music which many of them or the vast majority no longer exist.
