Peppe Voltarelli returns with “La grande corsa verso Lupionòpolis” (The great race to Lupionòpolis), the brand new album of unreleased tracks available on all digital platforms from 26 May 2023 and published by Visage Music. This is the first unreleased album eight years after the publication of the successful “Voltarelli canta Profazio” (Voltarelli sings Profazio) and two years after “Planetario” (Planetarium), both works awarded the Targa Tenco as best performing album, respectively, in 2016 and 2021. 

The Calabrian songwriter presents his new collection of songs recorded in New York by Marc Urselli (three Grammy Awards and collaborations with Nick Cave and Lou Reed) at Manhattan’s historic East Side Sound, and artistically produced and arranged by Los Angeles-based Italian pianist Simone Giuliani (to his credit, productions with Andrea Bocelli and the London Symphony Orchestra).

The album, which contains ten new tracks including eight songs in Calabrian dialect, one in Italian, and an instrumental waltz, was recorded last February and features musicians of international calibre such as Davin Hoff (double bass), Jake Owen (guitar), Stephane San Juan (drums), Mauro Refosco (percussions), and the participation of Eleanor Norton (cello), Dough Wieselman (saxophone and clarinet), and Amy Denio (vocals).

The record is accompanied by the music video of the song “Nun signu sulu mai” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srW9FfZbeng), shot in Brooklyn’s Red Hook neighbourhood and directed by Giacomo Triglia (Brunori Sas, Jovanotti, Lucio Dalla, Måneskin). 

After being published digitally on 26 May 2023 and having placed 2nd in the final ranking of the Tenco Prize in the best dialect album category, the new album “La grande corsa verso Lupionòpolis” has arrived in physical format. The special package, designed and printed by the publishing house Todo Modo Publishing in collaboration with Visage Music, consists of a small bag containing the CD of the album and a book with the lyrics of the songs and ten unpublished tales. In addition to the concerts (where a potato from Sila, Calabria, is given as a further gift), the special package can be purchased online (https://peppevoltarelli.bandcamp.com).

Peppe Voltarelli is Italian folk singer and story teller. This singer-songwriter comes out of a trobadour tradition, putting a distinctly modern and Italian twist on it. Hailing from Calabria, Voltarelli sings his tales with a distinctly Calabrian point of view and dialect, pointing out the hypocrisy and deep political corruption in one of Italy’s most troubled areas.

[𝗘𝗡] Peppe Voltarelli (Cosenza, 1969) is an Italian singer-songwriter, actor, and writer. He has been active since 1990 as leader and voice of Il parto delle nuvole pesanti, a cult new folk band. As a solo artist, he has published seven studio albums, four soundtracks, and two concerts. He won the Tenco Prize three times, with “Ultima notte a Malá Strana” in 2010 as best album in dialect, with “Voltarelli canta Profazio” in 2016, and with “Planetario” in 2021, both as best performer album. He was the lead actor and co-writer of the movie “The True Legend of Tony Vilar” by Giuseppe Gagliardi, the first Italian mokumentary. He boasts collaborations with Claudio Lolli, Teresa De Sio, Silvio Rodríguez, Adriana Varela, Kevin Johansen, Sergio Cammariere, Otello Profazio, Roy Paci, Carmen Consoli, Bandabardò, and Amy Denio. His intense concert activity has led him to play in 25 countries around the world and his records have been released in Europe, Argentina, Canada, and the United States. His latest work, the album “La grande corsa verso Lupionòpolis”, recorded in New York City and published by Visage Music in 2023, was placed second in the final ranking of the Tenco Prize in the category best album in dialect. It also won the Nilla Pizzi Prize in 2023 and the Loano Prize in 2024 as best album.

Si è aggiudicato tre volte la Targa Tenco, con “Ultima notte a Malá Strana” nel 2010 come miglior album in dialetto, con “Voltarelli canta Profazio” nel 2016 e con “Planetario” nel 2021, entrambi come miglior album interprete. È stato attore protagonista e coautore del film “La vera leggenda di Tony Vilar” di Giuseppe Gagliardi, primo mokumentary italiano. Vanta collaborazioni con Claudio Lolli, Teresa De Sio, Silvio Rodríguez, Adriana Varela, Kevin Johansen, Sergio Cammariere, Otello Profazio, Roy Paci, Carmen Consoli, Bandabardò e Amy Denio.
