Percebes starts 2021 by releasing the label honcho’s brand new “Gestures Of Release” LP. It’s an offering of tracks that reflect the producer’s unique take on languages he knows well, whilst retaining a unique sense of coherence. 

Guests include portuguese electro-funk band Thunder & Co, local junglist producer AL:X, fellow Percebes founder Hélder Russo and Chicago House new school gold medalist Andrew “Change Request” Emil. The quality of production and engineering is second to none on an LP that sounds as close to a maxi single as physically possible! There's much that a DJ can use on both dance floors and cooler settings alike, but also, an album that a music lover can enjoy on a proper turntable. Quoting Vito Corleone, it’s “an offer you can’t refuse”.

There’s deep, crunchy disco house (“Miles Away”), dreamy downtempo (“Suave”) and mellow freestyle funk (“Membrana”). Of course there are also plenty of irresistible bumping dance floor moments of classic inspiration (“Gestures Of Release”, “Clone Forge” and the bass heavy “Time Apart”).

Ka§par - Consciente
Following his previous EP from earlier in the year ("Presciente"), the final EP from Percebes that
close the season is ""Consciente", Ka§par's further exploration on the colourful concepts started in
"Presciente".
It's a set of tracks that research the parallelism between dominance and knowledge in order to
generate novelty. Ka§par's massive production and DJing experience (dominance) creates a set of
highly personal tracks that can questionably be considered "house music" but are permeated by a
wealth of many other aesthetics of both electronic and electro-acoustic music, from Detroit
Techno, Chicago House, UK Bass up to Jazz, Blues and of course Funk (knowledge).
"Quero Ficar Contigo" picks up soul samples to a backdrop of truly off kilter beats and basslines,
utilizing analog mono synths to squeeze noodly funk and drop it onto stabs of psychedelic soul
via deep fusionistic house music.
"Fica Na Boa"pays homage to the kooky sound of Chicago house legends like Paul Johnson,
Gemini and (of course) Cajmere/Green Velvet. Funky bleepy acidic vibes with smart beats and old
school funk MPC hits. Can't make it any dirter.
"Não Vim Para Esperar" uses a classic gospel/blues line to create a deep, mellow, yet very physical
mid tempo house track to get the club bumping when the first dancers approach the floor. One to
play against stuff from Theo, Boo, Glenn and other such legends.

Julien "Larry Quest" Berland is a young music maker, DJ and arts activist. He was born a french, lived in London for a while and recently settled in sunny Lisboa. He is a trained keyboardist and a
seasoned producer with works released on revered labels such as Delusions of Grandeur or Pleasure of Love - and of course Percebes Música, having had his debut on the label with "Faíscas", released in 2022 and still going strong in DJ playlists. Julien's sound is brimming with references to solid historic soundscapes, particularly the deepest end of the Chicago House music spectrum. Berland composes and produces music like someone who's learned lessons from the likes of such legends as Larry Heard, Boo Williams or Derrick Carter, but also underground heroes like Ricardo Miranda or Chris Gray. 

His EP "Austro" presents three tracks, pristinely created and mixed to weave a tightly knit texture of deep house that combines elements of jazz, gospel, funk and soul under a relentless electronic backdrop with clear references to rave culture and bleepy acid. While "Forest Jump" starts things off with a smooth beginning and takes off to dizzying heights, "Shoredance" bounces organ stabs with sharp snares and a thigh slapping beat and "303 Moonrise" evocates that classic, old school UR vibe to great effect. Eager to get into real house music made by a fresh, up and coming producer? Get into Larry Quest's brilliant "Austro" and enjoy one of deep house's most interesting current creators.

Jamie 3:26 (@jamie3too6) has been a pivotal part of the Chicago scene for decades. Hailing from the South Side, he has been immersed in the city’s musical culture since day one, and not long after started to help shape it with his own expressive DJ sets and edits. Many of them made it into A Taste of Chicago on BBE, a compilation he put together of his own early takes on Windy City mainstays like Chip E, Jungle Wonz and Braxton Holmes back in March. Over the years, he has held various residencies in the city and soon went on to break out onto the international circuit, where he continually represents his hometown sound with real authority.

Opening up with what sounds like a snippet from a pastor’s sermon, there is plenty of real life spirituality in this mix from the off. The ensuing two hours are a real lesson in groove and emotion, a panoply of house, funk, soul and disco that is loose limbed and expressive but also masterfully sequenced so as to tell a real story. It is a wonderfully widescreen representation of a city from someone who knows it as well as anyone, and one that will have you cutting loose and shifting shapes in no time.

PREMIERE: Sheri Vari - Beyond Aldebaran [Integrity Records]

Just a month or two ago, I received a pair of promos of music by Sheri Vari from separate channels. One of which was the fantastic new record she has forthcoming on Percebes, and the other an inclusion on the recent Integrity Records compilation. The excellent, ostensibly Detroit-inspired sound resonated with me massively and left me wanting to learn more. I dug a little deeper and discovered some previous work, but other than that, I came to the conclusion that perhaps Sheri Vari was someone who avoids the limelight. In a musical world that apparently values endless social media posts above the quality of product, this was something I found hugely refreshing. I decided to reach out to her for an interview because I was curious to know more, and on the strength of her sound, I felt that hers was a story that deserved to be heard.

Her music is exceptionally good. Freeform machine funk with an organic feel, and with a finely poised balance between rawness and harmonic intricacy. Frankly, I wouldn’t have been at all surprised if I’d found out that she was based in the motor city, but in fact, we tracked her down to her home in Lisbon, and she delivered a hugely entertaining and most insightful interview. On top of that, she’s furnished Cosmic Tiger with an expansive four-hour joy-ride of a DJ mix that ticks all the right boxes. For reference, my pick from her brilliant forthcoming ‘Flagrante Delirio’ record, ‘Luv101’, comes in at around 1’31’', and the equally good ‘SoInLuv’ collaboration with Javonntte follows at 1’55’’

John “Cyclonix” Wilcox is the original raver, the sort of person who knows the roots of his music inside out. He can craft an electronic music sculpture that echoes both the classic dance sound of the UK (bass heavy, chord based, break sampling and crisp), and the purest Chicago and Detroit house and techno influences. Some of the highlights on his career include releasing on cult labels like Tusk Wax, Smuggler’s Inn, Bristol’s Boogie Café and Phuture Shock Musik or contemporary dance floor soul staple Broadcite among other highly recommended projects.

“Efeito Borboleta” is his take on the Percebes sound and it features three incredible originals and a home-made remix by girl of the moment Sheri Vari.

It kicks off with “Butterfly Effect”: a deep stomper that could well have been released on Underground Quality or Sistrum. It is space and emotion, bubbling with jungle breaks and 909 power, channeled through the medium of deep, touching house music.

“Gift of a Patient Soul” is a slower burner, a crunchy jazzy mid-tempo acid funker - perfect to get that foot tap on. The remix by Sheri Vari flips it into a psychedelic deep trip, tapping into that odd parallel world where Rick Wade did a track with Maurice Fulton.

“Warm as Hoth” closes the EP. A funky live bass is intertwined by dreamy chords and chaotic melodies, made of stuttering vocal samples. The kind of thing you’d expect if Todd Edwards did a track with Marc Mac: classic UK garage with a jazz-funk vibe and a Detroit Techno feel. Hard to define, but very easy to listen to and play out.
