New mutant offshoot from the Talking Drums crew…

You know how it goes at the after party, over indulge and you end up hogging the conversation. So, in the interest of better dancefloor discourse allow us to present Drum Chums, a new series of edits by percussion pals from across the globe.

This inaugural edition comes from our good buddy Basso, a Hamburg homie whose digging expertise is rivalled only by his scalpel skills and superb silliness. Dipping into the darkest corners of his ever-Growing Bins, Bussi shines up a quartet of rediscovered delights for an edit EP which oozes grooves and off balance moves.

On an uptempo A-side, the German luxuriates in the spectral arps, glistening licks and uplifting chords of fusion boogie winner 'Do Stay For Breakfast' before serving the steamy, sultry and seductive vampire disco jam 'Soft Choppers'. 

Things take a turn for the Balearic on the B-side thanks to the Afro-tropical pop of 'Simple Stroll', all electroid bass, chugging percussion and playful guitar, and finally the cosmic cool of 'Breaking Bread', a spaced out bossa for heads and feet.

A2 Basso - Soft Choppers

Fuga Ronto's second release Greatest Treasure is a musical journey exploring different kinds of territories by blending elements of synth funk, dub, fusion, new wave and ambient with household noises, reverb vocals and quotes from movies to adventure games. Out of playful recording sessions the Zurich duo Schweizer and Shiller created songs with track names that read like movie titles. The treasure quest begins with a tongue-in-cheek intro before the title track kicks in. It’s all about exotic boogie with adventurous lyrics and voodoo magic. The rhythm guitar, percussion and multilingual chanting driven single „Falling Star“, lures even unathletic feet onto the dancefloor. "Columbo De Domingo“, a rolling instrumental based on a four chord sequence creates an illusional staircase moment. The tracks on the B-side guide towards slower and dreamier attempts. "Mirror To Water" builds on swaying synth pads that lead up to a laid-back song with breathy male and female vocals over a shuffling drum beat. It’s epilogue "Wobble In The Pool" sticks to the mood and takes the sounds further into dubby lands. The closing chapter "Mystery Of Zambio" is a delightful two- parter. Nostalgic melodies take the lead at first to be replaced by chords and a choir in the second part, until they dance away into the fade-out. Maybe a hint for a continuation of the story? One would hope so.

Mystic Jungle makes a much awaited return with Deviant Disco, a new 12” of sun-soaked groovers released through Periodica Records. A culmination of several years of writing, vibing, and influence mining, these compositions represent the producer’s most varied and expansive works yet, and to fully realize his vision, Mystic Jungle invited the entire West Hill Studio crew to contribute narcotizing layers of pop vocal mesmerism, and additional touches of guitar, bass, percussion, and synth. Strains of Italo disco, balearic boogie, and freaky funk are interspersed amidst passages of Nigerian highlife, soft focus AOR, kinetic Hi-NRG, and exotic lover’s rock, resulting in a personalized voyage through a paradise of sound, one that is unmoored from the concerns of modernity, and celebrates instead a hedonistic naivety, and a desire to dance all day in spiritual ecstasy. Dekmantel   and   Worldwide   FM-affiliated   DJ   Esa takes  Daymé Arocena's  steady-swaying, lighters-in-the-air   moment   to   more   uptempo   territories.   Propped   up   by   an   ‘80s   drum   machine   bounce,   soft-dappled   synths swirl   around   an   extremely   well-executed   xylophone   melody.   As   a   set   of   remixes,   they   achieve   no   mean   feat:   flipping   a melancholy   ballad   to   an   all-out   party   banger.   On   Eleggua,   Esa   takes   a   more   esoteric   angle   –   a   slow-build,   synths-and-bleeps chugger,   Daymé’s   distinctive   exaltations   are   the   track’s   driving   force.   

This   3-track  12”   is   another   impressive   effort   from   the   South African   DJ   sure   to   feature   heavily   in   clubs   worldwide.

For the third volume of compilations curated by confirmed crate diggers, Spacetalk invites you to take a trip to the magical Mediterranean resort of Club Meduse in the company of Beachfreaks Records co-founder Charles Bals. 

A creative director, designer and curator by trade, Bals spends the majority of his spare time searching for superb, unknown, small-run music releases made between the 1970s and 1990s. While some of these are made available for other enthusiasts to buy via Beachfreaks’ mail-order service, many more make it into the racks of Bals’ private collection. With Club Meduse, Bals is sharing rare, hard-to-find and just plain brilliant gems from his personal stash for the very first time. 

For Club Meduse, Bals was inspired by countless magic childhood summers spent playing amongst the rocks, beaches and warm seas of the Cote D’Azur. The compilation, then, is a soundtrack to the greatest soft-focus, sunlit teenage summer holiday you’ve never had, with a gaggle of forgotten musicians and overlooked artists for company. 

Take a barefoot stroll from the campsite to the beach with Ara Macao, whose warm and lucid “Canyon” is a softly-spun delight, before splashing in the crystal clear waters to the accompaniment of The Clean-Hands Group and their 1984 Balearic blue-eyed soul gems “Night Fly” and “Shake It On”. 

As the sun comes down, clamber across the cooling rocks with the tumbling, sun-kissed guitar solos and sparkling analogue synthesizer motifs of The Keyboys’ leisurely “Savannah” ringing in your ears, before using the words of Gemini’s “Take A Chance” – undoubtedly the most Balearic record to emerge from Sweden in the last 50 years – to get flirtatious under the moonlight. 

Should you fancy a dance down the camp disco, Bals’ selections will gently ease you onto the dancefloor and into the gaze of the boy or girl of your dreams. The fuzzy Italo-boogie of the C.V.Q Band’s “Whatever You Do (Instrumental)” will get you going, while Miss’s 1984 French electro gem “Hip Hop” should guarantee a celebratory conclusion to the night’s party. 

No perfect holiday evening is complete without a stolen kiss in a secluded cove, and happily Bals has it covered. Check the seductive, dub-powered Balearic synth-boogie of Gigi Flag’s brilliant “Nymphomaniac (Instrumental)”, the steamy sweetness of Bals’ own edit of The One “O” Ones “Radio Cosmo 101” – possibly the greatest tune recorded to promote an Italian radio station – and the undulating electronic rhythms and exotic synthesizer lines of Eddy La Viny’s overlooked ‘80s zouk classic “Havan’ Havac”.

"The next release on Periodica Records sees the label reaching outside of its familiar roster to present the equatorial groove excursions of Parbleu. ‘Danse Cette Zik’ is the debut LP from this enigmatic group of musicians and is a multi-cultural fever dream, wherein energized expanses of dynamic disco, futuristic funk, and cinematic jazz fusion are colored over by warming vibes of Caribbean dub, Latin tropicalia, and sunshine Afrobeat. Evocative instrumentals intertwine with breathtaking vocal performances, which move between sleepy-eyed soul serenades, mystical melodic chants, and expressive diva enchantments while pads swell in support—sometimes sparkling like ocean glass, other times raining down like a Morricone symphony.
