The Hairy Vest

once we were both looking for help searching for something outside of ourselves that could fill up a hole or hold up a load, so we searched until we overturned every stone we could roll and though we both tried our best, it mostly left a mess, but something was left that started to grow that I didn't see until I watched you go to continue your search with somebody else,

   but when you're on that road I hope you know what I found I've kept it alive in the darkest and warmest compartments inside where I try to keep it bound down and under control, but sound still leaks out now and then when I'll send you a line to remind me of what's still left of what was left behind

  and I know that you don't want it right now but I still keep it around just in case something changes or we find a way to make the same mistake

 and it'll wait so long for you to come back home

but if you don't come around again I hope you know that where I go and where I've been, I carry what grew so a part of you can stay with me after you are gone, after I've moved on, and after we forget.

and we're moving on, but it takes so long to let it go and to let things change, but it seems to be the further out you go the more you'll see that you can't make it stay, so even though God knows nothing gets erased, piece by piece it's rearranged until the feeling fades

Run On

it's Christmas in the desert southwest
but if you looked outside you'd never guess
so we gathered round to wish upon
the lights dumped on Fred Loya's lawn
and the traffic slowed down to a crawl
when we noticed snow began to fall


and the second the first snowflake hit the ground
half the roads in town got closed down
but it was worth the spike in traffic fatalities
to get some snow on christmas eve

and when we wake up, we'll check outside
to see the half-inch that's accrued
with hopes that it'll melt in time
for us to head out to the movies
before we all run out of food or things to say
to mom and dad on Christmas day

and with loved ones huddled close 
beneath the silver screen
we'll count on Tarantino
to show us all what Christmas really means

and in the parking lot of Cinemark
with lessons learned we'll disembark

and on the ride home get lost in
thoughts of moving out to Austin
and seeing all of our old friends who got away
from el paso's christmas day

but if you're still in town, chances are
you'll be celebrating Christmas
whether you're 23 or 31 
or a shunned jehova's witness
but if not you got the day off anyways
so have a happy X-mas day
or a merry Christmas day
and in Jesus name we'll pray
and if not well that's ok
just have a happy X-mas day

Suddenly He wakes up 
And sees the North
it’s taken all his life to wake up
 
he sees the north,
The call that drives him forth grows stronger
but just before he’s lost into the North
 
He looks behind, He sees his wife 
and sees his kids, in another life
He feels as if, They're at his side

the Great Divide
 
Then he feels the unseen force at his heels change his course 
when soon the floor creates a rift, loses grip, and starts to drift
and the drift he observes bends a line into a curve
and all he sees in the end will recede around the bends
 
Well, eventually, he arrives right near the unnamed peak
that rises 9,000 feet, 9 miles north of 62 degrees
 
And memories he carried on his Long Traverse 
Grow lighter 
and lose their worth
and just before they disperse
 
he looks below from where he climbed
shadows float into the white
he feels as though there was a time
they once meant more
and then Before is left behind
 
then he feels nothing more
nothing's real
with nothing forcing him to feel
a fire dies
and the floor begins to rise
 
and from that height above the earth
the horizon reveals its curve
and all he sees, in the end
sinks beneath the endless bend
 
and so the floor gets rearranged
til nothing’s left from where he came
